Pinochet-Castro: el mismo combate
Es rarísimo que un dictador deba rendir cuenta de sus crímenes ante un tribunal.
Felicitémonos, pues, de que Augusto Pinochet se haya convertido en una de estas
excepciones, gracias al celo de dos jueces españoles. Desgraciadamente, un
pequeño detalle privó de todo valor moral y cubrió de ridículo su iniciativa. En
el momento mismo en que ellos lanzaban su mandato de arresto contra Pinochet,
recluido en una clínica londinense, tenía lugar en Portugal -en Oporto- el
encuentro anual iberoamericano. A este evento asistía Fidel Castro, radiante de
salud.
Ahora bien, Castro presenta títulos tan sólidos como Pinochet para comparecer
ante una corte de justicia. Asombra que nuestros dos jueces no hayan aprovechado
la magnífica ocasión de arrestarlo, dado que Madrid sólo se encuentra a 600
kilómetros de Oporto, mucho más cerca que Londres. Desde luego, en tanto que
jefe de Estado en desplazamiento oficial, Castro está cubierto por la inmunidad.
Se sabía que la legitimidad jurídica del arresto de Pinochet sería fuertemente
contestada. Pero poco importa. Lo que cuenta es el alcance moral del gesto. De
la moral de los jueces no hablemos, de hecho ellos han pegado en un sólo
costado. La moral es universal o no lo es.
Los derechos del hombre son una impostura si su definición continúa dependiendo
del color del poder que los viola. Además, Castro no es un dictador que estuvo
en el poder 20 años. Es un dictador todavía en estado de hacer daño. Pinochet al
menos aceptó, en 1988, un referéndum dando la elección a sus compatriotas entre
su permanencia o su partida. Al haber perdido, se borró. Castro prolonga la
represión bajo la alegre capa de ingenuidad de unos políticos extranjeros, de
unas damas de buenas obras, unos cardenales, y del mismo Papa, que desfilan por
sus predios haciéndole "prometer" que ablandará su dictadura.
A los crímenes contra la humanidad, Castro agrega la deshonestidad financiera.
La revista Forbes, al enumerar las más grandes fortunas del mundo, evalúa la de
Castro en varios cientos de millones de dólares, evidentemente robados a los
cubanos.
Que se arreste a los dictadores jubilados es bien fuerte. Pero sería más
corajudo si se prende a los dictadores en ejercicio. Castro mismo, por otra
parte, menos bestia que sus engañados, ha sentido el peligro. Cuando la noticia
del arresto de Pinochet llegó al encuentro de Oporto, su comentario fue uno de
los más prudentes. Señaló "la complejidad del problema técnico-judicial"
planteado por el arresto de Pinochet y "el riesgo de una injerencia universal"
("El País", 19 de octubre).
Si Pinochet se encontrara todavía en el poder, ¿habría sido invitado a
representar a su país en el encuentro iberoamericano? Invitando a Castro, los
políticos iberoamericanos demuestran que no han comprendido las lecciones del
siglo XX. ¿Qué habrían sentido los futuros fundadores de la democracia española
si hubieran organizado un encuentro iberoamericano en Madrid en 1970? Pues bien,
el próximo encuentro, en 1999, tendrá lugar... en La Habana. Bella manera de
afirmar "los valores democráticos". La semana del evento, la prensa española
rebosaba de fotos del rey, todo sonrisas, en compañía de Fidel. Ver al gran
hombre que arrancó a su país de las garras del franquismo poner sus espaldas
bajo las patas del castrismo es algo patético.
No se trata en ningún caso de sostener que Pinochet no deba ser perseguido
porque Castro no lo es. Se trata de todo lo contrario, de argüir que Castro
debía serlo porque Pinochet lo es. A falta de lo cual las diligencias contra el
dictador chileno quedan desnudas de toda ejemplaridad universal. La enseñanza
que enviarán a las generaciones futuras será, una vez más, que lo importante no
es abstenerse de crímenes contra la Humanidad, sino elegir bien el campo en
beneficio del cual se los comete.

Pinochet-Castro: the same combat
It is strange that a dictator should surrender bill of his crimes before a
tribunal. Felicitémonos, because, that Augusto Pinochet has become one of these
exceptions, thanks to the zeal of two Spanish judges. Unfortunately, a small
detail deprived of all moral value and it covered of ridiculous its initiative.
In the same moment in that they threw their arrest command against Pinochet,
confined in a London clinic, he/she took place in Portugal -in Port wine - the
Ibero-American annual encounter. To this event Fidel Castro attended, radiant of
health.
Now then, Castro presents holding as solid as Pinochet to appear before a court
of justice. It astonishes that our two judges have not taken advantage of the
magnificent occasion of arresting him, since Madrid is only to 600 kilometers of
Port wine, much more fence that London. Certainly, as long as boss of State in
official displacement, Castro is covered for the immunity. It was known that the
artificial genuineness of Pinochet's arrest would be strongly answered. But
little cares. What counts is the moral reach of the expression. Of the morals of
the judges we don't speak, in fact they have only hit in a side. The morals is
universal or it is not it.
The man's rights are an imposture if their definition continues depending on the
color of the power that the viola. Also, Castro is not a dictator that was in
the power 20 years. He/she is still a dictator in state of harming. Pinochet at
least accepted, in 1988, a referendum giving the election to his countrymen
between his permanency or his departure. When having lost, he/she faded. Castro
prolongs the repression under the cheerful layer of some foreign politicians'
ingenuousness, of some ladies of good works, some cardinal, and of the same Pope
that you/they parade for his properties making him promise that it will soften
his dictatorship.
To the crimes against the humanity, Castro adds the financial dishonesty. The
magazine Forbes, when enumerating the biggest fortunes in the world, evaluates
that of Castro in several hundred of millions of dollars, evidently stolen to
the Cubans.
That it is arrested the retired dictators it is very strong. But it would be
more corageous if he/she lights up to the dictators in exercise. Same Castro, on
the other hand, less beast than their deceived, it has felt the danger. When the
news of Pinochet's arrest arrived to the encounter of Port wine, its comment was
one of the wisest. It pointed out the complexity of the technician-judicial
problem outlined by Pinochet's arrest and the risk of an universal inherence"
(The Country, October 19).
If Pinochet was still in the power, would it have been invited to represent to
his country in the Ibero-American encounter? Inviting Castro, the Ibero-American
politicians demonstrate that they have not understood the lessons of the XX
century. What would the future founders of the Spanish democracy have felt if
they had organized a Ibero-American encounter in Madrid in 1970? Because well,
the next encounter, in 1999, will take place... in Havana. Beautiful way to
affirm the democratic values. The week of the event, the Spanish press
overflowed of the king's pictures, everything smiles, in company of Fidel. To
see the great man that pulled up to their country of the claws of the franquism
to put their backs under the paws of the Castrism is something pathetic.
It is not in any case to sustain that Pinochet should not be pursued because
Castro is not it. It is of just the opposite, of arguing that Castro should be
it because Pinochet is it. For lack of that which the diligences against the
Chilean dictator are naked of all universal exemplariness. The teaching that
you/they will send to the future generations will be, once again that the
important thing is not to abstain of crimes against the Humanity, but choosing
the field well in benefit of which makes them to him.
