??.??.73/74 ? Unknown/Unknown SBD/? A+ 9.8    110
-   "Dick's Gift".
This is what the trader I got the tape from told me:

"Your second question was about the 'Dick's Gift' tape. This was supposedly made by Dick Latvala as a gift to all the DATheads. It contains the following "setlist." All recordings are of unknown date and location.

Garcia/Saunders: Jam > Are You Lonely For Me Baby > After Midnight

L.O.M.: Finders Keepers, Think, Flute Thing, 2nd That Emotion & My Funny Valentine, (cuts).

These are some of the finest recordings of these songs i've ever heard. A real find. You want it."

Ryan Shriver has to say this about the tape & my question: "Any other info on a tape I just received?":

"Yeah, I can add a little. While I don't know the specific dates, the Garcia/Saunders one sounds like it's from around spring of '73. It's definitely from one show. The LOM stuff is most likely from the winter/spring of '74 but the songs are not all from the same show.

Supposedly Dick found some unlabeled master reels in the vault and spun them to DAT. This is what leaked out (and I hear Dick was none-to-thrilled) after some people who weren't suppose to trade it did.

The setlists and timings are on my site, "The Jerry Site" (listed as ??/??/73 and ??/??/74 respectively). The '73 portion is wonderful! Hope this helps."

From Robert Hunter Diary:
Took off at 7 for an hour's walk. No one much out yet - Boulder's a late town. Air sweet and healing, a little goes a long ways. A good walking town. Felt recharged. Red Headed Woodpecker on the fire escape outside my window overlooking the mountains. I forgot to take my camera on the walk, but then figured that every shot of Boulder looks like a postcard anyway. Maybe I'll just take a shot out the window.
Onstage to start the 2cnd set last night, gal in the mosh pit called: "how come you buttoned your bottom button?" (the one at the belt line, shirt tucked in) Hey, at least my fly was zipped. That raises an interesting question: should an audience clue in an unzipped performer, and embarrass him onstage, or let him find out later in the privacy of the restroom when he realizes - and wonders if?! - but no - surely they would have told him ...
A couple of people who attended last night's show called me after reading yesterday's journal entry and wanted to know how I could have possibly have felt the show was a disaster. They thought the sound was marvelous and couldn't figure out where I was coming from! I said I thought the value of this road journal is to give the perception of the show from the performer's side. Will be doing an extra sound check in a few hours to ensure that both sides of the stage are satisfied. When it's all just right, there's nothing but music - the soundboard disappears - and energy flows back and forth rather than getting snarled in the loops.
Midnight   Just back from the show. Everyone seemed satisfied, including me. I truly enjoyed playing my guitar and singing tonight. the sound wads sensitive enough that lots of nuance was possible - I took some outrageous chances and a few of them paid off. The songs are like clay; you can take them apart and stick them back together in different ways. The people couldn't be nicer - a wide Western openness. Denver is really a lot more "Western," than California, which has an amalgam culture all its own.
From start to finish, the monitors were excellent.Bob Lyons ran them - he worked with me once before, on a Dinosaurs show. This left Jeff free to mix the house, and all accounts say thumbs up. What a relief! Sound good enough that I dared do a full Terrapin, including "At a Siding" and the ending piece "Recognition," which I've never done before. Felt good. Had fun. A satisfactory show gives energy. I could go back and do it again tonight!
Maureen and Kate arrived in NYC today to set up housekeeping in a place we rented for the layover. I'll center out of the East Village after Philadelphia. A home on the road.
Up early and off to Chicago tomorrow. One leg done and another begun. Miles to go. Might be a career here, if I do it right. If it ain't no fun, it's just another lousy job!
