Process Plant Operator
NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work operating the Process Plant facility including
lime-soda water treatment and brine concentrator and spray dryer
equipment.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated
supervisor and work under limited supervision. Work in this class
is distinguished from higher classes by its limited supervisory
responsibility and from lower classes by its advanced technical
skills.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Monitors overall operation of the Process Plant including
regulation and control of process chemical feed systems and parameters.
- Directs operation, maintenance, and chemical analysis work
associated with end treatment system and equipment.
- Directs operation and maintenance of brine concentrator and
spray dryer systems and equipment.
- Directs activities during periodic plant outages and interfaces
with contractors to facilitate and expedite work.
- Monitors and reviews operating parameters and costs. Computes
monthly operating costs and maintains records and reports.
- Monitors inventories of chemicals and supplies and orders
materials and chemicals as required.
- Informs Process Plant Supervisor of overall plant conditions
and recommends repairs and operational changes.
- Complies with information provided on Material Safety Data
Sheets for all products. Handles and stores items properly.
- Attends work on continuous and regular basis.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs general housekeeping tasks in work area.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable
equivalency diploma, and two years experience in Process Plant
operation and maintenance, or any equivalent combination of education
and experience.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
None required. This plant qualifies an operator to take the
Class "C" Wastewater License test based on the type
of wastewater processed and the daily flow.
NOTES
- Work requires normal color vision.
- Work requires physical strength and agility, including the
ability to lift, carry, push, or pull 50 pounds,
- Work at heights of over 100 feet on open grating or from
aerial devices required.
- Work may require performance of tasks in extreme heat and
confined areas.
- Work requires use of respiratory protection including self
contained breathing units.
- Work may require exposure to hazardous conditions and noxious
chemicals.
- Work requires rotating shifts
SELECTION FACTORS
Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, equipment, materials,
and operating practices of the process treatment plant.
Thorough knowledge of functions and servicing requirements
of mechanical equipment and machinery in the Process Plant.
Thorough knowledge of mathematics used to compute flow rates,
volumes, chemical dosage, feeder settings, process indexes, and
laboratory analysis.
Skill in care and use of process treatment equipment and
facilities.
Ability to plan, lay out, assign, direct, schedule, and inspect
work of others.
Ability to perform varied analyses on water samples.
Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in
operation and to detect flaws and defects and recommend corrective
actions.
Ability to prepare and present oral and written reports and
keep and maintain records.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to read, interpret, and direct work from blueprints,
flow diagrams, and piping schematics.
Ability to read, understand, and comply with Material Safety
Data Sheets.
