Training for Anatolian Shepherd Dogs - Lesson 9
LESSON NINE

HEELING WITH CHANGE OF PACE
It stands to reason that you will not always walk at the same rate of speed when you are out with your dog. There are times when you will need to go very slowly and other times when you may need to run or walk fast. While you are walking with your dog at heel, randomly, change pace. Do not make your change of pace abrupt. Lead into the slow or fast mode with a couple of steps to allow your dog to be able to stay in the proper position. Once he gets accustomed to you changing pace, then you can occasionally make an abrupt change - as if there was an emergency.

RECALL
Continue to work your recalls on the 6-8 foot lead. However, if your dog is coming slow, turn your left side to your dog and as you call his name, give the command COME. Then run a few steps to get him moving faster. The dog should also sit as part of this exercise – close enough that you may reach out and comfortable pet him. This exercise is known as the chase recall, everyone should do this exercise from time to time to really reinforce the come. You can tease them with your voice, food or toy to excite them. Remember the dog comes to you and NOT past you in the chase recall!

SIT/STAY and DOWN/STAY
Continue to use your long line, you want to be able to go to the end of your line and the dog stays until you have returned to the heel position and RELEASED your dog. If you and your dog are having problems with the stays, go back to where they are dependable. Start out again very slowly. Be VERY forceful in the stays, no petting or happy talk until released. Remember to get your hard no out as soon as they start to move not after they have already moved.
