Stories offer us a chance to affirm our nature as creatures of words, of consciousness, and to do so with pleasure and purpose. The enjoyment of carefully crafted narration offers the chance to reflect, to respond by thinking of one's own life, its nature, its assumptions, its aims.* To Teach and to Learn: The Jewish Short Story, will introduce the genre of the short story as a learning tool and a teaching tool. A culture's history and sociology are best explored through fiction and the medium of the short story is perfect for in-class reading and discussion. Each instructor's stories will include examples of family relations, Holocaust, and women's stories in addition to other topics.
*From: the introduction by Robert Coles to Books that Build Character, by William Kilpatrick and Gregory and Suzanne M. Wolfe.

Upon registration for this CEU, each registrant will receive several stories to read in preparation for the classes. Class discussion will assume that the stories have been read.
