Descendants of Nathaniel Wilds I

Generation No. 1

1. NATHANIEL1 WILDS I was born Abt. 1750 in Wales and the British Isles. He married CATHERINE ELMORE.

Notes for NATHANIEL WILDS I:

Wilds Family History

A ship called the "Vine" came to America from Lantindrovde, Wales, to the Province of Pennsylvania, prior to 1686, bearing many prisoners from the wars of the British Isles. If you have studied about the

colonization of early America, then you will understand that the British overlords were in control of the colonies. The ordinary people of Briton did not want to leave their home lands and possessions to

come to a strange land. So, they send the prisoners of war, some no doubt, holding high positions in

life before they were captured. Many were at odds with the unjust Church of England, which dictated

how they should worship. They became Baptists in secrete, and when they arrived in America, they were free at last to worship according to their beliefs.

Many of these people fought against the British in the Revolutionary War, such as Patrick Henry, who proclaimed "Give me liberty or give me death." They first started their Church in the settlement called Welsh Neck, Delaware. White settlement was slow in South Carolina from 1696 to 1730, and to encourage more rapid expansion, the Crown adapted a township system and offered land. The Welsh

in Pennsylvania, some of whom came to investigate the suitability of the province for their settlement, were David Lewis, Samuel Wild and Daniel James. They presented their petition and a colony soon followed upon the promise of a large tract of land, partly in Queensborough township, on the Great Pee

Dee River. This was desirable land for raising hemp, flax, etc.. and practically all of the Welsh Neck,

as this section came to be called, was soon granted.

In January, 1738, thirty of these settlers constituted a Baptist Church, at first called Pee Dee, but later named Welsh Neck after their first church in Pennsylvania or Delaware. This body, Pee Dee or Welsh Neck Church, was in effect an arm of the first, though the members had been dismissed before going to South Carolina. Entrees in the first Welsh Neck Church show their dismissal, they came to South Carolina, Georgia, and finally Florida. Thank God, they were Christians. We found their footprints in

the little churches that they formed along the way.

Welsh Neck Baptist Church, Pee Dee, South Carolina.

Darlington Co., South Carolina Court House, Book 2, pg. 19, abstract of Will of John Wilds, September 23, 1791.

(Note: John Wilds could be son of Samuel Wilds I, who came to South Carolina for the Welsh Neck Baptist Church of Pennsylvania-. He has named a son Samuel Wilds II.) Children: Mary George Wilds, Samuel Wilds II. (A long list of possessions were written.) George Wilds - Appraiser In Will Book 2, pg. 936, Will of Mary Wilds, lists: Grandson Samuel Wilds III, daughter Rebecca Wilds Dubase, daughter Mary Houze, granddaughter Carolina, son-in-law Elias Dubase. George Wilds - Appraiser 7/22/1812.

(Mary could be John's wife, had son Samuel of Carolina. Perhaps they loved the State?)

In the fall of 1978, I found this information in Baptist, appear parents, Samuel and Elizabeth Wilds. Samuel seems to be the Patrich of that family having been sent to investigate the suitability of the settlement in 1730. Able and John could be his sons. Mary seems to be John's wife, with a younger Samuel in the year 1780, on the Church record. George could also, be a son. Even today, Samuel, John, George, Jessie, and Nathaniel are popular "Wilds" names.

The following story on the "Wilds" family was told on June 8, 1962, by Mrs. Julia Wilds Muller, a great grand daughter, living in Fernandina Beach, Florida: Mrs. Julia Wilds Muller was born at Wilds Landing

on the St. Marys River in Nassau County, Florida, in November, 1874. She stated that Nathaniel Wilds came from Wales, received a Spanish land grant, and settled on the St. Marys River on the Florida side.

Even though she was quite old in her statement, I believe she would remember where her people originated. She stated that Nathaniel married Priscilla Turner from Duval County, which is true, and that Priscilla and Capt. Nat, as he was called, are buried source of ancestry. I believe that they were Welsh, as Mrs., Muller said. When the Cherokee lands were opened up for white settlers in 1696 - 1730,

the Welsh who had settled in Delaware and Pennsylvania, sent Samuel Wilds, David Lewis and Daniel James. They presented their petition and a colony soon followed.

In January, 1738, these settlers constituted a Baptist Church, later called Welsh Neck Baptist Church. Since Samuel Wilds was the first by that name, I believe he is the Welsh ancestor of the Southern family.

Capt. Nathaniel Wilds came to Spanish Territory of Florida around 1790. He had fought in the War of 1812 and was listed as a Rebel from St. Marys, Georgia. He had to become a Catholic, as all of the settlers had to do, in order to get Florida land, after which the Spanish Governor allowed him to

purchase the head rights of a Spanish land Grant, from it's former owner, Rueben Hogan.

He married Pricilla Turner, of the upper St. Johns area. It was here, that four generations of "Wilds" were born, reared and, in only the last twenty years, have faded from the shores of the St. Marys River. Nathaniel and Pricilla built a home constructed of hand hewn timbers, next to the creek that runs southeast through the middle of the Grant. Sometime prior to 1850, Wilds or one of his sons, began operation of a ferry of sorts, across the river. The ferry crossing was operated for more than 70 years, until the bridge was built across the St. Marys River at the point where US 17 presently crosses. The bridge was built in 927, just 300 feet to the east of the old crossing. The Wilds and the ferry that they

operated are gone now, with little more than water soaked timbers at the waters edge to remind us of

one of the earliest established crossing points on the St. Marys. Nathaniel and Pricilla are buried

there in unmarked graves (to keep the Indians from desecrating them.)

Generation No. 2

2. NATHANIEL2 WILDS II (NATHANIEL1) was born Abt. 1778 in Nassau County, Fl, and died 1830. He married PRACILLA TURNER Abt. 1809.

Notes for NATHANIEL WILDS II:

Capt. Nathaniel Wilds, Jr. married Hester Ann Braddock, 3/13/1831, in Camden Co., Georgia, a daughter of John David Braddock of Nassau Co. Florida. They settled down at Wilds landing, where Capt. Nat (as he was called) helped his father operate a ferry. An 1850 survey map of the St. Marys River, shows a road from the landing going south about a quarter of a mile, splitting and going west toward Kings Ferry and last to the Bell River and on to Fernandina.

The ferry crossing was operated for more than 70 years, until the bridge was built across the St. Marys River. This was a very busy operation, for this day and time, the crossing of Wilds landing was a primary gateway to Florida for more that a hundred years.

Notes for JOHN JOHNSON:

The first two sons, John and Phineus Johnson, are probably older sons of John. They are already married and living away from home in Nassau County, FL. All the children were born in Florida, so it seems likely that the first two must belong to John and Catherine. If anyone knows of more information, please let me know.

Notes for STEPHEN LEE JOHNSON:

Stephen Lee Johnson was the son of Henry C. "Doc" and Jane Elizabeth Mason

Johnson. He was born in Nassau County and his family moved to Duval County when he was a baby. He grew up on a farm on Old Kings Road, North, near the Duval and Nassau County line. He was only six when his mother, a native of Edinburgh Scotland, died and 18 when his father died.

Steve, as he was called, saw Hattie Keen for the first time at a distance when he was working as a telegraph operator in Dinsmore. When he heard that one of her

brothers-in-law was giving a square dance, he went. At first they traveled around to various locations in Georgia where he was sent to operate the telegraph equipment, but he said he finally quit because of lack of decent housing accommodations for himself and his wife. He built a house on Ratliff Road in Nassau County near where Edsel and Jimmy Higginbotham's homes are now.

Two of her brothers ran sawmills, and he drove a team for one of them, four

yoke of oxen, and handled logs for him. He did a lot of wheel wright work, fixing the timber carts when they broke down. During the "great depression", he built moonshine stills for people, to make home brewed whiskey, as this was one of the few ways left for most people to make a living during that time.

He became interested in carpentry and construction when he worked for "Newt"

Conner at his store in Callahan, when Conner wanted to do a lot of remodeling. He then started building and remodeling homes on his own until his gradual retirement. He built a home for his wife on old Kings Road in Dinsmore. Later, he built another one about 100 yards down the road because she didn't like the first one.

As a retired non contract home builder, he could not sit back and do nothing,

and there wasn't enough income coming in, so in his workshop, he added to the family income by means of at-home carpentry, his wooden rocking chairs of massive proportions with soft cowhide stretched across the seats. After he

sold his first chair, word of mouth served as his advertisement and the chairs sold as fast as he could make them.

Steve died with leukemia when he was 86 years old, and he and his wife Hattie

had been married for 66 years.

Notes for HATTIE HANSON KEEN:

"Granny Johnson", as I remember her, was hardworking and expected all around her to do likewise. She was loving, as far as I was concerned, always quick to offer condolence when a growing youngster needed such. She had to have the yards swept clean regularly, not raked, but swept with a "brush broom", a batch of

gallberry bush , or something similar tied together as a broom. No grass was allowed to grow in the yard.

She cooked very much, beans, black eyed peas, rice and gravy, greens and such, as well as plenty of biscuits. We always had home made cane syrup on hand, plenty of home made butter, cured pork from the smoke house and yard chickens.

We ate well. All of this was cooked on a wood burning stove. I happened to be in charge of getting wood for the stove, this Was a monumental task, as a fire burned in the stove all day long during the winter time, and most of the time otherwise.

In those days, we hitched the horse to the wagon and would drive into the woods to find a tree that was lightning struck, it could not be too dead or Granny would not use it. We would saw it down and load it on the wagon and bring it home in lengths. Then we would saw it into stove lengths, split and stack to use. We also had to get wood for the fireplace in order to keep warm in the winter. Granny wanted plenty of wood, always. Many times she would come out to the wood pile and stay with us as we sawed the wood with a cross-cut saw. Grandaddy kept the saw and the axe sharp.

I can remember clothes washing day at home. In the early days, she would boil clothes in the boiler (that took wood also) and then scrub them on a washboard to finish cleaning them. Then she had to have two tubs of rinse water and wring them out by hand -- this was hard work. Then she got a washing machine with an eccentric gas motor. I have seen her kick on the start kick to crank until she was out of breath, but she usually got it started. This made her life a little easier on wash day.

Then we had to grow monster gardens so she would have plenty to eat, as well as to can. I remember her so well, shelling peas, butter beans, shucking corn, making pickles, doing all the things to have food aplenty for the times when we were not growing anything. We tried to have something growing most of the time.

Granny made sure of this.

We had to come home on the school bus in the evening, and Granny always had something baked that we could have a snack as soon as we got in the house, changed out of school clothes (you did not wear school clothes except to school), and before you started chores. She cooked ginger bread cakes a lot, these were about one half inch thick and five inches across, also sugar cakes, bread pudding, cake and pie. This made you want to hurry and get home. We also had milk cows so there was plenty of milk to drink with all this food.

Granny was a strict disciplinarian, as well, she would cut a switch, no belt or razor strap, out of a bush, and you knew you were in trouble. She would switch you good, then make you come and hug her and she would hug you telling you all the time it was for your own good, she wouldn't do that if she did not love you.

I could write, no telling how much, but this is some of the things that made quite an impact on me as I grew up. I loved my Granny, and I knew she truly loved me as well.

iii. IRA CONROY JOHNSON, b. November 05, 1919, Keen Settlement, Ratliff Rd Nassau Co Fl; d. January 14, 1993, Method. Hosp., Duval Co. Jacksonville Fl.

Notes for IRA CONROY JOHNSON:

Connie Johnson grew up on his father's farm on Ratliff Road in Nassau County, Florida. He attended Callahan School and graduated at the age of 16. He joined the Navy and served five years. Acquiring the rank of Chief Petty Officer was a major goal in his life and he had achieved that at age 21. Two other goals--a good job and a place on the water--were soon to be accomplished.

Following his discharge from the Navy, He moved to Middleburg and joined North Florida Motors as parts manager. Twice he was named the outstanding parts manager in the United States and Canada. Then he bought a place on the water.

At age 39, Johnson was single, lived on Black Creek and was the nation's outstanding Ford Motor Company parts manager. "But the Lord was dealing with me," he said. It was during this time that a fellow worker visited him and Johnson made his profession of faith in his home on March 22, 1959. Ten months later, on January 17, 1960, Johnson gave up his successful business career and surrendered to preach. He said he began immediately to investigate enrolling in Baptist Bible Institute (Florida Baptist Theological College). "I was not raised in the church and had only a high school education," he said.

Before he could enroll, however, he had accepted the pastorate of Shiloh Church in Green Cove Springs and never got around to attending college or seminary. Instead, he said, God enabled him to grow in knowledge by allowing him to build a substantial personal library and blessing him with photographic memory.

Also, he attributes much of his development to the various training opportunities provided by the Jacksonville Association and Florida Baptist Convention.

In addition to the Shiloh pastorate, Johnson served eight years as pastor of First Baptist Church, Middleburg, and seven years at Allandale in Jacksonville, and twice at Long Branch, Oak Grove, and First Baptist Church, Black Creek.

Much in demand as a revival preacher, "Bro. Connie" "quit pastoring" in 1983 and went into full-time evangelism. One almost perennial invitation is at a Church of Christ in Macclenny where he has preached 16 or 17 revivals. Also, he continues to do interim and supply work.

"Don't sell the Lord short because there is no limit to what he can do," Johnson said of his current physical condition. For you see, he had been diagnosed with lung cancer at 72 years of age with only six weeks to live. He had had a chronic cough, but the doctors could never find anything wrong. He knew all along what he had, but the Lord had given him complete peace about it. He said, "Now Lord, if you can get more glory out of my death than my life, then go ahead and take me. But if you can get more glory out of my life, then you're the one who can help me with it," he said. He went through chemotherapy, and X-rays on Aug. 28 revealed no lingering signs of the cancer.

Those who knew Bro. Connie, a man who wears a smile as he talks, are aware that his entire ministry has exemplified a life totally yielded to God's will. He used the time he had left as a witness to God, just as the Lord had planned for his life. The cancer returned and he died seven months later on January 14, 1993.

She married (2) WALKER LEWIS MIZELL 1931 in Columbia Co., Fl, son of WILLIAM MIZELL and NELLIE WIGGINS.

Notes for MADELINE HARRIETT JOHNSON:

Madeline (Mom) is lovingly remembered for her wonderful family Christmas Eve dinners at Christmas time when the whole family would get together enjoying happy times, and exchanging gifts. The five sons and their wives and children were a congenial bunch and there was always lots of laughter and fun at these occasions, we will always remember these happy times together.

Madeline could be found outside in her yard almost every day when the weather was good, working in her flowers that she loved so well. She was a Sunday School teacher for several years in the children's department at her church.

She loved to go shopping and find a "bargain", and loved to eat "Whopper" hamburgers. You never had to guess what she was thinking, as she was very plain spoken and let her thoughts be known, whatever the situation was, and it didn't matter who heard what she had to say either.

As she grew old, she loved her five sons dearly, unless they didn't do things just exactly like she thought they ought to, whether it was the right decision for her welfare or not, and then she would let it be known that "You didn't have much when you had a bunch of boys"!

But she really did love them in spite of the fact that they didn't always do just exactly like she thought they should!

She was 84 years old when she died of mini-strokes and Alzheimer disease.

76. WALKER DORMAN8 MIZELL (MADELINE HARRIETT7 JOHNSON, STEPHEN LEE6, HENRY CURTIS5, JOHN4, CATHERINE3 WILDS, NATHANIEL2, NATHANIEL1) was born July 24, 1931 in Callahan, Nassau Co., FL. He married JEAN THERESA HODGES June 06, 1953 in Callahan, Nassau Co., FL, daughter of WALTER HODGES and HELEN BEASLEY.

Notes for WALKER DORMAN MIZELL:

Dorman Mizell grew up on Ratliff Road, South of Callahan, Florida, at the home of his grandparents, Steve and Hattie Keen Johnson, and graduated from Callahan

High School in 1949. He worked part time in the meat market at Tiller's Grocery Store in Dinsmore, Florida, while he was in high school.

After he graduated, he went to work at the Federal Reserve Bank in Jacksonville

working in the mail room. He decided that working indoors and the banking business was not for him. Against his Grandmother Hattie Johnson's wishes, he went to work for Perret's Dairy in Dinsmore, running a milk route in the Riverside area of Jacksonville. He liked this much better, and won several company contest prizes, as he was the ambitious type.

On June 6, 1953, Dorman Mizell married Jean Hodges. They lived in Callahan for eight months in a house rented from her Uncle Leon Hodges on Fourth Street.

On February 1, 1954, he came to work for Walter Hodges, his father-in law, at the

poultry farm and hatchery. The pay wasn't much, $50.00 a week back then, but he stayed with this job.

They were expecting their first child in April of 1955. After lunch on Suday, April

17, Dorman was outside working on their 1949 Ford car, trying to get it to run, when Jean had to go to the hospital. Jean's mother, Helen, drove them to the hospital in her and Walter's car, as they didn't trust Dorman's car, and besides, Dorman was so nervous he couldn't tie his shoe laces. On Monday, April 18, 1955, their first son, Clyde was born.

As the chickens hatched, so did the Mizell boys. The second son, Larry, was born

September 10,1957, the third son, Mike, was born December 2, 1961, and the fourth son, Walt, was born January 28, 1963.

As time passed, Dorman had more and more responsibilities working at the farm

and hatchery, until Walter's health began to fail inearly 1960's. Walter became very ill with cancer, and passed away on February 28, 1965.

Dorman now had the full responsibility of the Hodges Poultry Farm and Hatchery

business. This was a very stressful time for a young man of only 33, the husband of Jean, and now father of four young sons to raise. He no longer had his father-in-law, Walter, who had always been there, to confided in and guide him in the day to day business problems. His Presence would always be missed, but life would go on, and so it has.

Walter would approve, I'm sure, of the progress that has been made through the years since he passed away, and be so proud of all his grandsons and their wives, and all of his great grand children!

In 1993, Doran's health began to fail and he was diagnosed with colon cancer

and had to take chemotherapy treatments. He recovered from this illness.

Dorman has almost retired, his roll now has changed to frequent consultant and

advisor of the business to his sons. Dorman is a stockholder and partner of Hillandale Farms of Florida, located at Lake City, Florida and, also Black Gold Co.,

located in Oxford, Florida, in which he is a partner.

In his free time, he loves to play golf with his brothers, friends, and his business partners. He and Jean enjoy going to their lake house on George's Lake at

Florahome, Florida, occasionally between family get-to-gethers. There is usually

always a special event of some kind going on in this family, with the children and all of the grandchildren. There's never a dull moment!

Christians lose slugfest

Morristown outlasts UC 18-17

By Ben Watkins

Times-Union sports writer

East Morristown (Tenn.) high school

scored 13 runs in the final two innings to

complete a dramatic 18-17 baseball win

over University Christian yesterday.

''It feels great to come back like that,''

said Hurricanes pitcher David Kinsler,

who picked up the victory in relief.

The Christians jumped out to a 13-4

lead in the fourth inning behind an

offensive explosion. UC hammered out

16 hits in the first three innings, including seven extra-base hits. Jason Mizell,

Brad Rowand, Brent Ivey, and Jay Miller all homered for UC early.

UC starting pitcher Brad Reynolds was effective, allowing two earned runs in

just over three innings of work.

With the Christians comfortably ahead, both coaches emptied their benches

to allow the younger players to get some experience. The Hurricanes then

made their move.

Morristown's comeback was due in part to performances from unexpected

heroes. Kinsler, the third pitcher of the game for Morristown, had not pitched

in two years, and was surprised when his coach gave him the call.

''When he told me I was going in to pitch, I thought it was a joke,'' Kinsler

said.

Kinsler was serious on the mound, however. He came on to start the fourth

inning and held the Christians' bats in check. Over his first three innings he

allowed no runs and only one hit, and struck out four.

In the meantime, Morristown's bats came alive. The Hurricanes trimmed UC's

lead slowly but surely, scoring two in the fourth on a home run by catcher

Josh Fletcher, and one in the fifth. At that point the UC lead was 14-5.

Morristown did most of its damage in the sixth and seventh innings.

Sophomore B.J. Collins, playing in his first varsity game, hit a three-run home

run in the sixth.

''I was just in there trying to swing the bat,'' said Collins.

Shortstop Steven Skaggs also hit a three-run shot during the inning.

The Hurricanes went into the final inning down by two. Ivey came on in relief

to try to slow the Hurricanes offense, but wasn't successful. Morristown

scored six runs on five hits and a pair of hit batsmen. At that point the

Hurricanes held a four-run lead.

Christians coach John Brown said the bullpen has been an area of concern for

his club.

''We just haven't had the pitching to go in and stop them all year,'' Brown

said.

The Christians mounted a comeback in the final inning. Jon Helquist hit a

one-out single, and Mizell followed with a walk. Rowand then singled, scoring

Helquist. With two on, Ivey hit a ball through the infield which was misplayed

by left fielder Casey Sullivan. The ball rolled to the wall, scoring two. John

Zellner then singled, putting the tying on third base. However, Kinsler retired

the next two batters to end the game.

Brown said the dimensions of his ballpark lead to high-scoring games.

''You never know what's going to happen,'' Brown said. ''Anybody can beat

you here.''

Yellow Jackets beat Christians in slugfest

By Bryan Mullen

Times-Union sports writer

The University Christian baseball field is known as a hitter's ballpark. The

right-field line is one of the shortest in the city, measuring 285 feet, and St.

Augustine High School and University Christian took full advantage of the

short park in yesterday's game.

The Yellow Jackets and Christians combined for five home runs as St.

Augustine outlasted University Christian 7-5.

St. Augustine's James Green hit the first pitch of the game over the left-field

fence. Green then took the mound and shut down the Christians over the next

three innings, striking out four and giving up only one hit.

''It was a good way for us to start,'' Green said. ''I usually take the first pitch,

but I saw it and hit it. Anytime we get a lead early in the game, it relieves a lot

of pressure.''

St. Augustine (18-6) tacked on a run after Green's homer, and the Yellow

Jackets loaded the bases two innings later. With one out, Lance Allen hit a

routine ground ball to second and it appeared University Christian would get

out of the inning on a double play. Jamie Miley bobbled the grounder, but

managed to force Ryan Cornelison at second. The Yellow Jackets' Mark

Taylor scored on the play for a 3-0 lead.

Brad Reynolds then struck out Tyson Tinsley to end the threat. Reynolds

ended the game with 10 strikeouts.

The Christians (11-14) responded in the fourth when Brad Rowand and John

Zellner hit back-to-back, opposite-field home runs to cut the lead to one.

University Christian then loaded the bases and the No. 9 hitter, Jay Miller,

drew a walk to force in the tying run. The Christians took the lead two batters

later when Jason Mizell hit a ground ball to second, which was booted by

Allen, allowing Reynolds to score.

With two outs in the fifth, Ryan Cornelison gave the Yellow Jackets the lead

on a two-run blast over the left-field wall for a 5-4 lead.

University Christian rallied one last time in the sixth when Miley hit an

opposite-field home run, but Green retired the next six batters in order.

Cochran shuts out sixth-ranked Bolles

By Justin Barney

Times-Union sports writer

University Christian pitcher Brent Cochran wasn't nervous facing one of the

best teams in Jacksonville last night. Even though the opponent was traditional

baseball powerhouse Bolles, Cochran wasn't about to let the pressure get to

him.

The talented senior struck out 11 and allowed only two hits as the Christians

blanked the visiting Bulldogs, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A, 7-0 in District 5-3A

action.

''I always like to do that,'' said Cochran. ''It takes the work off the rest of the

staff.''

UC (11-4, 2-1) got on the board early when Jon Helquist connected for his

fourth home run of the season, a solo shot in the first inning off Bolles pitcher

Brad Graham.

Rashad Anderson led off the third with a shot up the middle for UC and

Graham followed by walking Jamie Miley and Helquist to load the bases.

Jason Mizell, who was 3 for 3 on the day, ripped a single to center field which

scored Anderson and Miley. Helquist scored two batters later on a wild pitch

as UC built a 4-0 lead.

''We made the plays today,'' said Christians coach John Brown. ''We made

two errors in the first inning and that was it. The kids played great for us

today.''

Although Cochran was nearly unhittable, he ran into some trouble in the fourth

inning. After getting two early outs, he walked Graham and Matt Larmoyeux

followed with a double down the third-base line. But Cochran regained his

composure and fanned Justin Hart to end the inning.

''I just tried to keep my head and stay strong,'' said Cochran.

The Christians would strike again in the fifth on a long single by Mizell that

bounced off the wall. Joe Fennell followed with another single off the wall and

Graham hit Derek Hodges with his next pitch to load the bases. Jay Miller

followed with a drag bunt that scored Mizell to make it 5-0.

Bolles' Justin Fischer then relieved Graham and didn't fare much better. With

the bases loaded, he walked Greg Cooper and Anderson on eight

consecutive pitches to bring in two runs and helped close out the scoring.

Cochran closed the door on the Bulldogs (8-4) in the seventh, getting John

Clarkson to ground out, striking out Chris Mayo and then Kelly Basinger to

end the game.

''The guy threw a great game,'' said Bolles coach and former UC player

Storm Davis. ''He got two pitches over the plate and he was tough to hit.''

''He's been doing that pretty well for us this year,'' said Brown of Cochran.

''His consistency of throwing strikes helped us out. We needed to win this

district game to get back on track.''

Episcopal defeats St. Johns

By Jim Scavino

Times-Union sports writer

One swing of the bat was all Episcopal needed, as Amy Mizell's first-inning,

two-run homer and strong pitching from Kendyl Scholz and Lauren Morris

carried the Eagles to an 8-1 victory yesterday over visiting St. Johns Country

Day.

''We had nine hits and held them to only two. So, we outhit them pretty well,''

Episcopal coach Kasse Eppley said.

The Eagles' hitting advantage over the Spartans started early. In the bottom of

the first, Mizell drove a Jackie Reynolds' pitch over the fence for a 2-0 lead.

The shot was the first fence-clearing home run for Episcopal (7-2) in two

years.

In the top of the third inning, after a walk and an error put runners on second

and third, St. Johns' Ashley Dodd ran the count to 3-2 with two outs. But

Scholz fired a strike past the third baseman to end the threat.

The bottom half of the inning proved disastrous for the Spartans (3-2) as a

series of errors and Eagles hits - highlighted by Amanda Farmand's

bases-clearing double - stretched the lead to 8-0. Episcopal sent 10 batters

to the plate in the inning.

From there, Scholz - starting only her second game - cruised until being lifted

in the fifth for Morris. The two sophomores combined to hold the Spartan

offense to two hits. The only St. Johns run - scored by Sarah Beaty - came

on a wild pitch.

''They've played three games in a big tournament this past weekend [the First

Coast Tournament] and I think they were just tired,'' St. Johns coach Debra

Huling said. ''But we've got to work on our defense.''

''We just have to continue to improve offensively and not make any mental

mistakes,'' Eppley said, whose team won the First Coast tournament. ''We

have a young team.''
