Generation No. 1

1. DAVID1 STOKES was born Abt. 1750 in Craven Co., NC in 1767 & paid taxes, lived in Buefort Co., SC in 1790, and died Bef. 1820 in Probably Buefort Co., SC. He married MILLEN.

Notes for DAVID STOKES:

The information on the beginning Stokes families was found on the Gen Forum at http://www.genforum.com/stokes/ and Passengers In Time, "The Early Stokes" at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/7590/. I have included some of the queries from these sights as a beginning point for future research for those of you who are interested in tracing these ancestors further or that may have documented information that you would like to add to the Stokes family line.

Please refer to these sites for email addresses if you need to contact a contributor. I would appreciate any additions or corrections that you may have to help with family connections. I'm not sure if David's father was David or Thomas Stokes, If anyone has proof on this, please let me know.

The book "Stokes-1000 Years" , and also, "The Book of Stokes 1201- 1915," are both out of print, according to Mr. Frank Chilton, but can be found at some genealogical libraries, but he doesn't know exactly which ones.

My Absalom had two families. First wife, Nancy Allene Atkinson, bore him 4 children in SC before her death. Between 1820 and 1830 he moved, probably with his mother, to Walton Co, FL. When in his 60s he married a neighboring young girl, Elizabeth Jay. They had 5 children: Mary, Matthew Wright, Noah Stanton, Burrell Jackson, and Decatur. The first 4 were John William, Wright Absalom, Thursanne, and Josiah Hampton.

Ronald, saw your query regarding Stokes. I am very interested in this family as my mother was a Stokes. 7. BURRELL THOMAS4 STOKES (BURWELL JACKSON3, ABSALOM LAFAYETTE2, DAVID1) was born February 23, 1817 in SC, and died Abt. 1865 in probably New Orleans, LA. He married LEVISA ALTMAN October 25, 1838 in Ware Co., GA, daughter of ALTMAN.

Notes for BURRELL THOMAS STOKES:

Burrell Thomas Stokes is listed as a Florida State Pioneer of Hamilton County, Florida, with the Florida State Genealogy Society.

In the 1850 Census of Alauchua Co., FL, the spelling for Burrell is (Bunnell) and the spelling for Levisa is (Louisa). The first six children are the same names, so the census taker must have mispelled Burrell and Levisa's names. The 1860 Census of Alauchua Co., FL, has it spelled Burrell and Levisa Stokes with, of course, more children born in the past 10 years.

More About SARAH A. STOKES:

Burial: Mill Creek Cem., Nassau, Co., Fl

Notes for WILLIS ALEXANDER HODGES:

Wllis Alexander Hodges was born Nov. 7, 1852, son of Willis Aaron Hodges

and Mehalia Johns Hodges. He was born in Camden County (in the portion

made into Charlton Co. in 1858).He married Sarah A. Stokes, daughter of Elbert Greenberry Stokes and Courtney Crews Stokes. When they were children,

Willis and Sarah were living with their parents at Traders Hill, according to the 1860 Federal Census, Charlton Co., Georgia. In the 1880 Census, they are

shown as being married with three sons, Elbert, Walter W. and Horace, and

Willis was listed as a farmer. The 1910 Census of Charlton Co., Georgia shows them with their younger children, Sarah, Dola, Lizzie and Sherod. It list Willis's parents as being born in North Carolina.

Before the turn of the century, Willis A. Hodges was in the lumber business

and owned a sawmill between Crawford and Kent, Nassau Co., Florida. The

mill was located out US 301 Southwest of Callahan on Crawford Grade Road.

It was told that he owned an enormous amount of land, cut the timber off of it

and made a fortune on it. Then, let the land go back for taxes, because in those days, land wasn't worth anything, and the taxes would cost more than the value

of the land.

Willis's son, Walter W. Hodges, worked with him in the lumber business when

he was a young man. When Willis and Sarah were older, they moved to Grand Crossing, on the North side of Jacksonville Florida. After Sarah died in 1923, Willis lived with his daughter, Della Hodges Owens, in the Riverside area of Jacksonville. The story has been told that when people began to drive automobiles instead of horses and buggies, Willis Alexander Hodges didn't

like folks driving by his house so fast, so he decided to slow traffic down by digging a trench across the road in front of his house, which got the job done!

Like most Hodges men, he was born to hunt! Willis loved to go deer hunting,

and his son Walter said that when he was really to old to go hunting, they

would take him anyway, and would hold the gun for him to shoot a deer. They continued taking him until he was no longer able to go. He died at the home of

his son, Walter, in Callahan, Florida, in 1930.

25. WALTER WILLIS6 HODGES (SARAH A.5 STOKES, ELBERT GREENBERRY4, BURWELL JACKSON3, ABSALOM LAFAYETTE2, DAVID1) was born December 06, 1875 in Toledo, near Moniac, Charlton Co., GA, and died May 23, 1960 in Jacksonville, Duval Co., Fl. He married PEARL EDITH OWENS June 10, 1903 in Jacksonville, Fl, daughter of DIXON OWENS and LAURA PLUNKETT.

Notes for WALTER WILLIS HODGES:

Walter Willis Hodges, Sr., was born in the little settlement of Toledo, near

Moniac, Charlton County, Ga. His father, Willis Alexander Hodges, was a

farmer and sawmill owner and was in the lumber business. His mother was

Sarah A. Stokes, daughter of Elbert Greenberry Stokes of Charlton Co. Georgia.

When he became a young man, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he worked helping to build the old "brick" paved streets in Jacksonville. In 1903,

he married Pearl Edith Owens, when she was only 14 1/2 years old and they

lived in a rooming house on Pearl St. in Jacksonville at that time. Pearl was

the daughter of Dixon H. Owens and Laura F. Plunkett from the little town of Dunbarton, S. C. This small town was located near the Savannah River where

the "Savannah River Project" atomic energy plan was erected back in the

early 1950's.

Walter Hodges was in the lumber business with his father, who owned a

sawmill between Crawford and Kent, Nassau, Co. Florida. This mill was

located out US 301, Southwest of Callahan on Crawford Grade Road.

According to Clyde Mizell, a great grandson, he was told by E. G. Green, now deceased, that E. G. had worked for them when he was young and that they

owned an enormous amount of land, cut the timber off of it and made a fortune

on it. Then they let the land go back for taxes, as land wasn't worth anything

in those days. The taxes would cost more than the land was worth back then.

After the turn of the century, he owned a grocery store in Callahan on the South side of Dixie Ave. (called Railroad Ave. back then), located on the corner of

Dixie Ave. and Mickler St., in the same building that also housed the Conner Drug Store, that was owned by "Newt" Conner, and a barber shop.

On August 20, 1904, their first child, a son, Auburn Leslie Hodges, was

born. About 1909, Walter and Pearl moved to Callahan to their new home that

he built on the north side of the Callahan Post Office on US1. Their second

child Lillian Marguerite Hodges was born on May 7, 1909. And on August 1,

1911, their third child, Walter Willis Hodges, Jr., was born. Two years later,

their second child, beautiful little Lillian, died with diphtheria on January 7,

1913. There was no vaccine then for the disease of diphtheria. Their third

child, Walter, also caught diphtheria some time later and almost died, but

they were able to get the doctor to come from Jacksonville on the train, and

bring the serum to him in time to save him. It was a terrible disease. Thelma Kathleen Hodges, their fourth child, was born on February 28, 1917, and their

fifth child, Leon Carey Hodges was born on August 23, 1919. Walter Hodges

sold his grocery store to "Newt" Conner in 1921. In 1923, he and his brother, Horace L. Hodges, was on the Board of Directors for the Callahan State Bank.

In 1923 he was a member of the Dasheen Growers, Inc....... He owned another sawmill that was located at the sight of the viaduct on US 301 in 1922, and

later sold it to Mr. Tom Wells.

In 1929, he owned and operated a chicken business behind his home, back in

his field, which now borders Stratton Road in Callahan. He rented the farms

of H. C. Pickett on Pickett Rd., and Dr. Brewster, south of Callahan and also raised chickens there. He owned and operated a baby chick hatchery and

bought a Buckeye Incubator from Mr. Bunker who lived in Mandarin. The

hatchery was located at the intersection of Lem Turner Rd. and US 1 in

Callahan in the building now owned by Mr. Roland Smith, where the office of

Dr. Weaver is now located. He gave his oldest son, Walter, the 20 acres that Hodges Poultry Farm and Hatchery and the red brick home was built, that is

now owned by Dorman and Jean Mizell off Hodges Road on Dorman Place. Also, the five acres where Helen Hodges home is located. He gave his daughter, Thelma, land located on both sides of Quail Rd., and his son, Leon, the land where the "Quail and Huggins" homes are now located near the end of Quail Rd. The "Quail" home was formerly the home of Leon C. Hodges.

Walter Hodges owned land from Cushing Creek on Lem Turner Road all the

way around to US 1, where the Callahan Town Hall is now located, and all

the way back to Stratton Rd., behind the Winn Dixie Shopping Center, and all along Cushing Creek. In the 1950's, he owned 55 acres of timber land located

at the end of Quail Road, and sold it to Container Corp. for a good price.

Walter Hodges was the Chairman of the Board of Deacons for many years at Callahan First Baptist Church. On July 22, 1918, he was on the committee on entertainment in charge of cleaning up the church grounds. On May 4, 1925,

he was appointed on the building committee for the construct tion of a new pastorium. On February 8, 1939, a motion was made by W. W. Hodges, Sr.,

that the church install rest rooms in the church. Amen! This motion carried,

and progress marched on.

He had reputation for having a "good name" and being a man of his word. It

was not uncommon for him to help someone financially when they were in

need. He was a "devout" deer hunter and was known for telling his exciting

deer stories, with much animation and expression. A new church sanctuary

was built in 1960, and the first service was held on May 8, 1960. Walter

Willis Hodges, Sr., passed away on May 23, 1960, and was the first person

to have a funeral service in the new church.

Notes for PEARL EDITH OWENS:

Pearl Edith Owens traveled by horse and wagon with her family from Dunbarton,

S. C., to Winona, Ga., a little settlement near Moniac, Ga., next to the Florida state line. Her parents, Dixon H. Owens and Laura F. Plunkett Owens and

family settled there, where she met Walter Willis Hodges, Sr., and on June 10, 1903, they were married in Jacksonville, Florida. In about 1907, they moved to Callahan in their new home that is next to the Post Office on US 1.

Pearl Owens Hodges became a member of Callahan Baptist Church in 1908

and had worked in the W.M.U. since its organization there. Her Southern hospitality has always been extended to every minister and pastor connected with the church and her delicious southern home cooking was exceeded by

none. In those days, church members invited the preacher home for Sunday dinner most Sundays and there were no restaurants for people to go out to eat.

Every Sunday sermon was made more beautiful by a vase or bowl of flowers

that she had grown in her yard and artistically arranged for the church services. She was chairman of the flower committee in 1950-1951. Pearl Hodges was chosen "Mother's Day Mother" of the year, May 5, 1949, for the state of Florida

in the, "Florida Baptist Wittness" paper. This was about the highest honor that

could possibly be bestowed upon a mother. She was a faithful worker and one

of the main cooks for the church kitchen and helped with all of the special

church dinners until her age and health no longer permitted her to do so.

She was also a Charter Member of the Order of the Eastern Star, No. 154 in Callahan. She was always the perfect Southern hostess at her family dinners, which would consist of not one, but three or four meat dishes and equal

amounts of assorted vegetables, salads, casseroles, deserts and her famous pound cake and Lady Baltimore cake. She would always say, "Won't you

have some more"? And the more we ate, the happier she became! Grand

mama loved her grandchildren and loved to spoil them.

After her husband, Walter, passed away, she eventually went to live with her daughter Thelma Hodges Smith, on Cherry St. in Jacksonville. She passed

away July 26, 1966, from strokes. She was a wonderful mother and grand-

mother and there is no way to describe how much we all have missed her.

Notes for CHARLES M. OWENS:

Dixon Owens and his family came from Dunbarton, Barnwell County, South

Carolina. The little town of Dunbarton, S. C. has now vanished from the map

since the Savannah River Project atomic energy plant was established there

back in 1952.

Dixon Owens moved his family to the Georgia Bend area and lived near

Moniac. It has been said, that Dixon Owens moved his family to Georgia at

the insistence of his adventuresome son, Charlie Owens and his friend Walter Baughman, in search of bigger and better opportunities. In 1994, the following story was told by Fred Park, Jr., son of Fred Park and Maude Owens Park, one

of Charlie's sisters, and was also remembered by Maude Hodges Conner, a

niece of Charlie Owens, that was interviewed in 1995.

When he was a young man, Charlie Owens was a short small man, the old

Laura Plunkett Owens. At this time, he was living in the Georgia Bend area

and had a disagreement with a man (name unknown) over some timber, and in the process, Charlie Owens murdered the man. The Law was in hot pursuit of

Charlie, and being a small man, he was hidden in the enclosed seat of a wagon. It is said that a "Hodges woman" (Could this have been Willis Alexander

Hodges wife, Sarah?) was sitting on top of the wagon seat, and when the Law arrived, they searched the wagon, but she never moved from where she was seated on the wagon seat, in which Charlie was hidden. The seat was small,

so, ordinarily, a man would not be able to hide in there. The Law, being

satisfied, left and he was smuggled out of the Georgia Bend, over the state

line into Florida. He never was caught, so he got away with murder.

This is another story told by Fred Park, who was living upstairs with his mother, Maude, in Jacksonville, along Main St. and Pearl St. for about four years, in the same building that Charlie Owens and his wife Della Hodges Owens were living

in at that time: Charlie Owens was known to have a "bad temper" and was a racist. The details of the story are unknown at this time, but it was told that he murdered a Negro man in Jacksonville, and wasn't ever caught for that murder either.

Later, he moved to Tampa, Florida, and went into the sewer building business along with his three sons, Julian, Willis and Wallace Owens, and built the

sewer system for the city of Tampa. They became quite wealthy in this

business.

When he was old, you would never think that he had a past like this, he was friendly and everyone liked Uncle Charlie. Submitted by: Jean Hodges Mizell, great niece of Charles M. Owens.

51. WALTER WILLIS7 HODGES (WALTER WILLIS6, SARAH A.5 STOKES, ELBERT GREENBERRY4, BURWELL JACKSON3, ABSALOM LAFAYETTE2, DAVID1) was born August 01, 1911 in Jacksonville, Duval Co., Fl, and died February 28, 1965 in St. Lukes Hosp, Jacksonville, Duv. Co Fl. He married HELEN ESTELLE BEASLEY December 17, 1933 in Folkston, Charlton Co., GA, daughter of LAWRENCE BEASLEY and GRACE PICKETT.

Notes for WALTER WILLIS HODGES:

Walter Willis Hodges, Jr. was born August 1, 1911, in Jacksonville, Fl. He

was the third child of Walter and Pearl Owens Hodges. He played basketball

on the Callahan High School team and graduated from Callahan High School

in 1930. He worked for his father in the chicken business and attended law

school for about two years, but realized that this was not the occupation for

him to pursue.

On December 17, 1933, he married Helen Estelle Beasley. He worked for his

father in the chicken business for about two years and was making $7.00 a

week, back in those days.

He then built a small frame house, on the land that his father had given him,

where Dorman and Jean Mizell now live, off Hodges Road. He applied for a

loan at the Atlantic National Bank in Jacksonville and on this land, he and an

old Negro man named, Bill Crane, cleared and built his chicken farm where he raised chickens and Helen gathered and helped pack the eggs to be sold, on

his egg route in Jacksonville. He used a white mule named "Pet" and a two-wheeled cart that he built, to haul the 100 pound sacks of feed to the

chicken houses. Feed was carried in by the sack or in a galvanized tin bucket

to fill the feed troughs for the baby chicks and chickens to eat. He hired Mr.

Gilbert Jones for several years, and when he left, he hired Mr. James "Dan" Meredith to do this job. He worked until his health and age no longer

permitted him to work.

Later, about 1947, he bought a "Farmall" tractor, to replace his old mule and

cart, to be used to haul bags of feed to the chicken houses. Also, he planted

vegetable gardens, corn, and also sugarcane. The cane would be squeezed

in the mule drawn cane mill for cane juice that would be poured into the huge syrup boiler to make cane syrup in the syrup boiler. He raised Poland-China hogs, and Herford beef cattle to be sold at the market.

About 1945, after World War II, he built a hatchery building behind the egg room at the farm. His father, Walter Hodges, Sr., was ready to retire from the chicken business, so Walter took over his father's hatchery business that he and his wife, Helen, had been working at in Callahan, and moved it to his farm, that is now located on Hodges Rd. His first incubators were Buckeye Incubators. Walter and

Helen worked very hard to make this a successful business. As time went on,

the hatchery business grew and so did the hatchery building, as more

hatchery machines had to be purchased to be able to fill the chick orders. The

new machines were Robbins Incubators, and quite an improvement over the

old Buckeye Incubators. Their first daughter, Jean, was born on May 18, 1935. Their second child, Vivian Patricia, was born July 24, 194l, and died July 26, 1941.

In 1950 - 1951, Walter Hodges, Jr. was Chairman of the board of church ushers

and General Superintendent of Sunday School at Callahan First Baptist Church

in Callahan. He was also Chairman of the Board of Deacons for several years.

On June 6, 1953, Jean married Dorman Mizell. On February 1, 1954, he came

to work for Walter at the poultry farm and hatchery. As time passed, Dorman

had more and more responsibilities working at the farm and hatchery, until Walter's health began to fail in early 1960's. Walter became very ill with

cancer, and passed away on February 28, 1965.

His presence would be missed for year to come, but life would go on, and so

it has. Walter would approve, I'm sure, of the progress that has been made through the years since he passed away, and be so proud of all his grandsons and their wives, and all of his great grand children! Dorman has almost

retired, his roll now has changed to frequent consultant and advisor of the business. Two of Walter's grandsons, Clyde and Walt Mizell, are now running

the hatchery business and pullet operation. His grandson, Larry, has his own business, Mizell Insurance Agency, and grandson Mike, owns Mizell Water Specialist. The great-grandsons work on the farm part-time and during school vacation time in the summers. It's dirty work, but It's good for them, keeps

them busy and it helps to build character! They are the fifth generation to be working in the "chicken business".

Baptist Church records, family Bible record.

Notes for WALKER DORMAN MIZELL:

Dorman Mizell grew up on Ratliff Road, South of Callahan, Florida, at the home of his grandparents, Steve and Hattie Keen Johnson, and graduated from Callahan

High School in 1949. He worked part time in the meat market at Tiller's Grocery Store in Dinsmore, Florida, while he was in high school.

After he graduated, he went to work at the Federal Reserve Bank in Jacksonville

working in the mail room. He decided that working indoors and the banking business was not for him. Against his Grandmother Hattie Johnson's wishes, he went to work for Perret's Dairy in Dinsmore, running a milk route in the Riverside area of Jacksonville. He liked this much better, and won several company contest prizes, as he was the ambitious type.

On June 6, 1953, Dorman Mizell married Jean Hodges. They lived in Callahan for eight months in a house rented from her Uncle Leon Hodges on Fourth Street.

On February 1, 1954, he came to work for Walter Hodges, his father-in law, at the

poultry farm and hatchery. The pay wasn't much, $50.00 a week back then, but he stayed with this job.

They were expecting their first child in April of 1955. After lunch on Suday, April

17, Dorman was outside working on their 1949 Ford car, trying to get it to run, when Jean had to go to the hospital. Jean's mother, Helen, drove them to the hospital in her and Walter's car, as they didn't trust Dorman's car, and besides, Dorman was so nervous he couldn't tie his shoe laces. On Monday, April 18, 1955, their first son, Clyde was born.

As the chickens hatched, so did the Mizell boys. The second son, Larry, was born

September 10,1957, the third son, Mike, was born December 2, 1961, and the fourth son, Walt, was born January 28, 1963.

As time passed, Dorman had more and more responsibilities working at the farm

and hatchery, until Walter's health began to fail inearly 1960's. Walter became very ill with cancer, and passed away on February 28, 1965.

Dorman now had the full responsibility of the Hodges Poultry Farm and Hatchery

business. This was a very stressful time for a young man of only 33, the husband of Jean, and now father of four young sons to raise. He no longer had his father-in-law, Walter, who had always been there, to confided in and guide him in the day to day business problems. His Presence would always be missed, but life would go on, and so it has.

Walter would approve, I'm sure, of the progress that has been made through the years since he passed away, and be so proud of all his grandsons and their wives, and all of his great grand children!

In 1993, Doran's health began to fail and he was diagnosed with colon cancer

and had to take chemotherapy treatments. He recovered from this illness.

Dorman has almost retired, his roll now has changed to frequent consultant and

advisor of the business to his sons. Dorman is a stockholder and partner of Hillandale Farms of Florida, located at Lake City, Florida and, also Black Gold Co.,

located in Oxford, Florida, in which he is a partner.

In his free time, he loves to play golf with his brothers, friends, and his business partners. He and Jean enjoy going to their lake house on George's Lake at

Florahome, Florida, occasionally between family get-to-gethers. There is usually

always a special event of some kind going on in this family, with the children and all of the grandchildren. There's never a dull moment!

Christians lose slugfest

Morristown outlasts UC 18-17

By Ben Watkins

Times-Union sports writer

East Morristown (Tenn.) high school

scored 13 runs in the final two innings to

complete a dramatic 18-17 baseball win

over University Christian yesterday.

''It feels great to come back like that,''

said Hurricanes pitcher David Kinsler,

who picked up the victory in relief.

The Christians jumped out to a 13-4

lead in the fourth inning behind an

offensive explosion. UC hammered out

16 hits in the first three innings, including seven extra-base hits. Jason Mizell,

Brad Rowand, Brent Ivey, and Jay Miller all homered for UC early.

UC starting pitcher Brad Reynolds was effective, allowing two earned runs in

just over three innings of work.

With the Christians comfortably ahead, both coaches emptied their benches

to allow the younger players to get some experience. The Hurricanes then

made their move.

Morristown's comeback was due in part to performances from unexpected

heroes. Kinsler, the third pitcher of the game for Morristown, had not pitched

in two years, and was surprised when his coach gave him the call.

''When he told me I was going in to pitch, I thought it was a joke,'' Kinsler

said.

Kinsler was serious on the mound, however. He came on to start the fourth

inning and held the Christians' bats in check. Over his first three innings he

allowed no runs and only one hit, and struck out four.

In the meantime, Morristown's bats came alive. The Hurricanes trimmed UC's

lead slowly but surely, scoring two in the fourth on a home run by catcher

Josh Fletcher, and one in the fifth. At that point the UC lead was 14-5.

Morristown did most of its damage in the sixth and seventh innings.

Sophomore B.J. Collins, playing in his first varsity game, hit a three-run home

run in the sixth.

''I was just in there trying to swing the bat,'' said Collins.

Shortstop Steven Skaggs also hit a three-run shot during the inning.

The Hurricanes went into the final inning down by two. Ivey came on in relief

to try to slow the Hurricanes offense, but wasn't successful. Morristown

scored six runs on five hits and a pair of hit batsmen. At that point the

Hurricanes held a four-run lead.

Christians coach John Brown said the bullpen has been an area of concern for

his club.

''We just haven't had the pitching to go in and stop them all year,'' Brown

said.

The Christians mounted a comeback in the final inning. Jon Helquist hit a

one-out single, and Mizell followed with a walk. Rowand then singled, scoring

Helquist. With two on, Ivey hit a ball through the infield which was misplayed

by left fielder Casey Sullivan. The ball rolled to the wall, scoring two. John

Zellner then singled, putting the tying on third base. However, Kinsler retired

the next two batters to end the game.

Brown said the dimensions of his ballpark lead to high-scoring games.

''You never know what's going to happen,'' Brown said. ''Anybody can beat

you here.''

Yellow Jackets beat Christians in slugfest

By Bryan Mullen

Times-Union sports writer

The University Christian baseball field is known as a hitter's ballpark. The

right-field line is one of the shortest in the city, measuring 285 feet, and St.

Augustine High School and University Christian took full advantage of the

short park in yesterday's game.

The Yellow Jackets and Christians combined for five home runs as St.

Augustine outlasted University Christian 7-5.

St. Augustine's James Green hit the first pitch of the game over the left-field

fence. Green then took the mound and shut down the Christians over the next

three innings, striking out four and giving up only one hit.

''It was a good way for us to start,'' Green said. ''I usually take the first pitch,

but I saw it and hit it. Anytime we get a lead early in the game, it relieves a lot

of pressure.''

St. Augustine (18-6) tacked on a run after Green's homer, and the Yellow

Jackets loaded the bases two innings later. With one out, Lance Allen hit a

routine ground ball to second and it appeared University Christian would get

out of the inning on a double play. Jamie Miley bobbled the grounder, but

managed to force Ryan Cornelison at second. The Yellow Jackets' Mark

Taylor scored on the play for a 3-0 lead.

Brad Reynolds then struck out Tyson Tinsley to end the threat. Reynolds

ended the game with 10 strikeouts.

The Christians (11-14) responded in the fourth when Brad Rowand and John

Zellner hit back-to-back, opposite-field home runs to cut the lead to one.

University Christian then loaded the bases and the No. 9 hitter, Jay Miller,

drew a walk to force in the tying run. The Christians took the lead two batters

later when Jason Mizell hit a ground ball to second, which was booted by

Allen, allowing Reynolds to score.

With two outs in the fifth, Ryan Cornelison gave the Yellow Jackets the lead

on a two-run blast over the left-field wall for a 5-4 lead.

University Christian rallied one last time in the sixth when Miley hit an

opposite-field home run, but Green retired the next six batters in order.

Cochran shuts out sixth-ranked Bolles

By Justin Barney

Times-Union sports writer

University Christian pitcher Brent Cochran wasn't nervous facing one of the

best teams in Jacksonville last night. Even though the opponent was traditional

baseball powerhouse Bolles, Cochran wasn't about to let the pressure get to

him.

The talented senior struck out 11 and allowed only two hits as the Christians

blanked the visiting Bulldogs, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A, 7-0 in District 5-3A

action.

''I always like to do that,'' said Cochran. ''It takes the work off the rest of the

staff.''

UC (11-4, 2-1) got on the board early when Jon Helquist connected for his

fourth home run of the season, a solo shot in the first inning off Bolles pitcher

Brad Graham.

Rashad Anderson led off the third with a shot up the middle for UC and

Graham followed by walking Jamie Miley and Helquist to load the bases.

Jason Mizell, who was 3 for 3 on the day, ripped a single to center field which

scored Anderson and Miley. Helquist scored two batters later on a wild pitch

as UC built a 4-0 lead.

''We made the plays today,'' said Christians coach John Brown. ''We made

two errors in the first inning and that was it. The kids played great for us

today.''

Although Cochran was nearly unhittable, he ran into some trouble in the fourth

inning. After getting two early outs, he walked Graham and Matt Larmoyeux

followed with a double down the third-base line. But Cochran regained his

composure and fanned Justin Hart to end the inning.

''I just tried to keep my head and stay strong,'' said Cochran.

The Christians would strike again in the fifth on a long single by Mizell that

bounced off the wall. Joe Fennell followed with another single off the wall and

Graham hit Derek Hodges with his next pitch to load the bases. Jay Miller

followed with a drag bunt that scored Mizell to make it 5-0.

Bolles' Justin Fischer then relieved Graham and didn't fare much better. With

the bases loaded, he walked Greg Cooper and Anderson on eight

consecutive pitches to bring in two runs and helped close out the scoring.

Cochran closed the door on the Bulldogs (8-4) in the seventh, getting John

Clarkson to ground out, striking out Chris Mayo and then Kelly Basinger to

end the game.

''The guy threw a great game,'' said Bolles coach and former UC player

Storm Davis. ''He got two pitches over the plate and he was tough to hit.''

''He's been doing that pretty well for us this year,'' said Brown of Cochran.

''His consistency of throwing strikes helped us out. We needed to win this

district game to get back on track.''

Episcopal defeats St. Johns

By Jim Scavino

Times-Union sports writer

One swing of the bat was all Episcopal needed, as Amy Mizell's first-inning,

two-run homer and strong pitching from Kendyl Scholz and Lauren Morris

carried the Eagles to an 8-1 victory yesterday over visiting St. Johns Country

Day.

''We had nine hits and held them to only two. So, we outhit them pretty well,''

Episcopal coach Kasse Eppley said.

The Eagles' hitting advantage over the Spartans started early. In the bottom of

the first, Mizell drove a Jackie Reynolds' pitch over the fence for a 2-0 lead.

The shot was the first fence-clearing home run for Episcopal (7-2) in two

years.

In the top of the third inning, after a walk and an error put runners on second

and third, St. Johns' Ashley Dodd ran the count to 3-2 with two outs. But

Scholz fired a strike past the third baseman to end the threat.

The bottom half of the inning proved disastrous for the Spartans (3-2) as a

series of errors and Eagles hits - highlighted by Amanda Farmand's

bases-clearing double - stretched the lead to 8-0. Episcopal sent 10 batters

to the plate in the inning.

From there, Scholz - starting only her second game - cruised until being lifted

in the fifth for Morris. The two sophomores combined to hold the Spartan

offense to two hits. The only St. Johns run - scored by Sarah Beaty - came

on a wild pitch.

''They've played three games in a big tournament this past weekend [the First

Coast Tournament] and I think they were just tired,'' St. Johns coach Debra

Huling said. ''But we've got to work on our defense.''

''We just have to continue to improve offensively and not make any mental

mistakes,'' Eppley said, whose team won the First Coast tournament. ''We

have a young team.''
