Descendants of John Edwards
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN1 EDWARDS was born in Lived in Nassau Co., Florida in 1814, and died 1818 in St. Augustine, FL. He married MARY ANN BRADDOCK, daughter of JOHN BRADDOCK and LUCIA COOK.
Notes for JOHN EDWARDS:
Nominal Poll of the inhabitants of both Rivers of Nassau. In the 1814 Spanish
Census of Florida, reel #148 is listed: John Edwards widower age 38, Male children 1 of 1-7 yrs., 1 from 7-16 yrs. Female children, 1 of 7-16. Total in family 4. Total slaves 13.
John Edward, widower, married second, Mary Ann Braddock, daughter of Capt. John Cutler and Lucia Braddock. Will of Mary Braddock Edwards, State of Florida, Jefferson County, list her children. John and Mary Braddock Edwards moved from Amelia Island to St. Augustine with their family where he established himself and engaged in boat building. At the time of his death in 1818, he owned a large number of slaves and was a wealthy man. After his death, the family moved to Jefferson County near the town of what is now called Lloyd.
Mary Braddock Edwards died at her plantation and is buried at Edgewood Cemetery beside Elizabeth Edwards, her oldest daughter. Mary had a very lengthy will in which she named every child except Elizabeth, who had preceded her in death.

The family history on the rest of this family seems to have been written by a granddaughter of Oscar Christopher Edwards. I found the typed family history
in my mother, Helen Hodges, files and have included it in the Edwards Family History. I do not know where it came from, the papers are yellowed and appear
to be old. There is no mention as to who wrote it, but the author said that Oscar Christopher Edwards was her (or his) grandfather.

Dear Ann Telfair Cramer,
I was looking through some the records I found researching my book and found
several items which my be of interest to you as a descendant of John Edwards
and probably of Edward Telfair:
The first is a record from the Telfair papers and deals with the Somerville
estate, of which Edward Telfair was administrator. Email format may prevent
columns from aligning properly. The mentioned William Lyford Jr. is my fifth
great uncle and some great uncle to you as a descendant of David Cutler
Braddock, Lyford's brother-in-law:

The next is from a meeting of the Georgia Council of Safety three months after
the British had been run out of Georgia. In addition to uncle William Lyford
Jr. being mentioned, Peter Edwards--who may or may not be related to John
Edwards--and Edward Telfair are named:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------
Collections of the Georgia Historical Society (Excerpt of minutes of meeting
from "Proceedings of the Georgia Council of Safety"):

America, when the following list was proposed as containing persons of this
character:

------------------------------------------------
Edward Telfair was not only exonerated of the charge of being for the British
cause by being included on a 1780 list of those the British considered as
traitors, he later elected one of the state of Georgia's early governors.
The remaining items are about a John Edwards who I thinks is the one who
married Lucia Braddock. The first is a record of belated payments for service
in the Revolutionary War. John Edwards is list as having been lieutenant on a
galley. John Braddock is on the same list as captain of a galley. There were
few Georgia gallies in the war, so there is a good chance that the two men
served on the same vessel and that may be what lead to John Edwards meeting
John Braddock's daughter Lucia:

To Captain John Hardy, for pay for 8 Negroes on
Board the Gallies, £ 264-
To Peter Thomas, for his pay as Captain of Artillery at
the reduction of Augusta, per resolve of Assembly, £ 49-11-8
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
--------------------------------------------------
John Hardy commanded one of the other gallies. If my memory serves me
correctly, I think I heard from someone, perhaps Pat Goodbread Smith or Judge
Alexander D. Williams, that the Thomas Ellis Hardee that Mary Ann Berrie,
daughter of Lucia's sister Mary Ann Braddock Berrie, married. was a descendant
of Captain John Hardee.
John Edwards, along with John Braddock and most public figures of Glynn
County, was listed in the July 10 issue of the State of Georgia Gazette as a
defaulter of taxes on land on St. Simon's Island:
Defaulters of St. Simon's District.
John Thompkins, Jacob Helvelstone, Richard Touchstone, Christopher
Touchstone, John Piles, John Nunn, Hugh Binks, Joseph Terry, Richard
Summerford, Leonard Harper, John Palmer, Martin Palmer, George Jenkins,
Alexander Bisset, Samuel Gray, Barthalomew Bath, James Woodland, Arthur
Adkins, William Mazo, Richard Dudley, John Edwards, James Helveston,
Raymond Demere jun, Alexander Daniel Cuthbert, John Braddock, Richard
Bradley, William Edwards, Jesse Wicket, Daniel Manson, William Steven, John
Burnet sen, John Burnet jun, George Fulford, ---Garnet, John Jones, John
Good, James Spalding.
J. Mackintosh jun,
Receiver of Tax Returns St. Simon's Island.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
---------------------------------------
And finally, John Edwards is again coupled with John (Cutler) Braddock in the
Glynn County Militia, of which John Braddock later became commander:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the above pertaining to John Edwards presents pretty good
circumstantial evidence that he served with John Braddock in the effective
campaign John Braddock and his galley waged against the British.
I hope this information serves in furthering your search of Edwards family
history.

NN EDWARDS:We know of no heir in her family since her husband died in 1836; however, in her mother's will written in August, 1847 we find these words "I give and bequeath unto my daughter Ann Christopher and her heir forever..." If she had children, nothing is known about them. She is the "Grandma Christopher" who took my grandfather and others in his family when we was suddenly orphaned by the untimely death of his mother, Mary Kempes Turnbull Edwards in the year of perhaps 1851. She left her will reading that all "monies I may get or receive from the Spanish Claims" should go to the wife and children of "my nephew, Oscar Christopher Edwards'" my grandfather. She also left 80 acres of land to his son, James Braddock Edwards.

LFRED A. FISHER:He built a beautiful home for his wife, Caroline, which still stands as part of the East Hill Baptist Church buildings in Tallahassee, Fl. We were always told that the knob to the front door was sterling silver. The house was originally located on College Ave. just one block below the First Baptist Church and was known as the Ellis house because it was owned for a long time by Judge Ellis and his family. The lines are beautiful and should be listed among those places to visit in Tallahassee. Col. Fisher and Caroline evidently separated since she lived with her mother until her mother died and then with sister Ann Christopher. No heirs have been mentioned.

ENRY RECUS EDWARDS:Mentioned as son in Will of Mary Edwards. Henry lost his sight at the age of 22 when a limb or Splinter entered his eyes. He was riding out in the woods on his horse at the time. However, this accident did not hinder him from leading an almost normal life. He married the lovely Isabella Denham from Dunbar, Scotland, and although they never had children, he built a beautiful home for Isabella on a large plantation near Lloyd, and he successfully carried out the work of farming by means of his colored people, whom he constantly directed. It is said that he was accustomed to walking through his cotton fields and predicting the extent of the crop by touching with his sensitive fingers the blossoms and bolls of the cotton plants. I have been told that the flower garden around the house was beyond compare with any others in that area. I have also been told that Henry gave the land for Springfield Church and Cemetery, but I am not sure of this.

He was a Methodist minister. He was moved about by the Church all the way from the lovely old church at St. Mary's, GA, over to Gadsden Co., FL. We found records of the early ministers of the Church listed among the items of historic interest when we visited there in 1976. A beautiful home was also built for Adeline in Monticello, in 1831., and stands today very much like the house it was though slightly remodeled. The Wirlicks moved to another plantation close to Lloyd, where they remained until their deaths.

10. JOHN TURNBULL3 EDWARDS (JAMES BRADDOCK2, JOHN1) was born August 08, 1840. He married LOUISA BERRIE HOLLAND May 29, 1862.
Notes for JOHN TURNBULL EDWARDS:
Most of the information which we have on him comes from his grandson, John (Jack) Turnbull Edwards III, who lives in Charleston Heights, SC. It is interesting that there have been four "John Turnbull Edwards" so far and may perhaps be a fifth by now. It must be remembered that the "Turnbull" in this name comes from their relative Mary Kempes Turnbull, originally although this particular family is also related to the renown, "Dr. Andrew Turnbull," through the marriage of John Turnbull Edwards to Louisa Berrie Holland on May 29, 1862. This occurred during the Civil War, and the couple never returned to Jefferson Co., except for visits.
One written source describes "The Edwards House" in St. Augustine, John T. Edwards, Proprietor, as being "delightfully located and commands a view of the bay, the ocean, the sea-wall and fort.....kept open in both winter and summer, and is one of the most popular in the city. Mr. Edwards.....came to St. Augustine in 1876. During the Civil War he was a member of Longstreet's Corps, operating in Virginia. From this union came four children.

Notes for JAMES WOODY EDWARDS:
Mentioned as grandson in Will of Mary Edwards.
He served as a soldier in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865, when he was discharged after having been a prisoner of war for two years, he returned to Jefferson Co., where he married, worked, and lived out the rest of his life. At one time he was State Senator from the district.
He lived next door to his brother who was my grandfather, both men having received the land as their share of their father's plantation, and the "James Woody Edwards" property has remained in the hands of the family continuously now being farmed by, Walter Bond Edwards Jr., his grandson.
