Maps tell us so many things
“IF”
If roses are red
"Lunch Date”
Lunch with my honey
the first four lines of this poem I wrote with a crayon on the paper tablecloth at the Cargo Café. We had lunch there overlooking New York harbor and the Manhattan skyline the day before 9-11-2001. I wrote the rest of the poem that night before I went to bed, who could’ve known what the next day would bring. “Love Eternal”
Just as the Earth needs the sun “Loves’ Bridge”
My angel on the Earth "Fountain of Love"
The fountain in the park "This Tiny Ring"
This tiny ring of silver "Laugh for Me"
“Images”
Images from the past
“Shadow of the Bat”
On a dark and rainy night

A face on the screen
Reaching out to people
That I’ve never seen
I scroll through their words
That many throw up like a shroud
You can hear the loss and bitterness
Between accomplishments so proud
So many amazing feats
They seem to do each day
Can they really do all these things?
Or is it fighting pain and dismay?
Honesty is the best policy
I believe the old saying goes
So I held my breath and wrote the truth
Then waited to see what would show
Some that responded seemed nice enough
Some were very sweet
Others were boastful, almost tainted with anger
For those I’d simply click “delete”
Then came a fateful e-mail
From a tender soul far away
On her keyboard by the window she typed
The words her heart had to say
Warmed by her openness and humor
I could not help but respond
The baby steps of our new lives began
That we had waited for so long
Finally on the phone we connected
To give voice to the words we had shared
Each call made our hearts beat stronger
Like none we could ever compare
At last we met face to face
Fear and doubt flew away like birds
Such joy we found in each others arms
Could scarcely be described with words
A click of the mouse
A beat of the heart
An answer to a prayer
What a great place to start
And so my life found happiness
The kind I only dreamed of
This hopeful heart of yours
Has given me my only true love

“Map of My Heart”
To help us find what we seek
The paths of roads and rivers
Carry adventures both bold and meek
Maps show the way to the hills and valleys
To mighty snow capped peaks high above
To roads that chase the waters to the ocean
Such a map helped me find your love
On a highway long, on a misty day
At roadside restaurant we met
With a glowing smile and a tender touch
I was happily caught in your net
Then began an endeavor
So many have dared to undertake
To begin to map a human heart
Is a risky task with much at stake
Yet she must be an explorer and a guide
For she has charted her way so well
Clearly marking old roads that were dead ends of pain
Blazing new trails with stories to tell
She has opened floodgates of emotions
Built bridges over lonely swamps so dark
Put up signs that read I LOVE YOU
In every place that was empty and stark
She has lighted the highways that were already there
To make them look fresh and new
She lets me show her the places I dearly love
From autumn mountains to the waters so blue
So colorful and detailed a map she has made
So many points of interest marked along the way
This a map I’ll cherish forever
To be with her for all of my days

"Heart on Wheels"
In the dark of night
the headlights brightly shine
the wheels steady rolling
following this heart of mine
the roads are no stranger
you see we've done this before
but we're never ready to stop
til we're parked at her door
It's a run we look forward to
the "taxi" and I
but it's never as much fun
when we have to say goodbye
so when we get to go back
we eagerly await
to make familiar scenery go by
along the asphalt so straight
til we reach the long turnpike
like a greyhound we take flight
and run without tiring
aiming for the bridge marking lights
It feels like the Arch of Triumph
as we cross over to your Island home
I want to wave the checkered flag
to let everybody know
that once again we've run the course
to see my love in this chariot of steel
I'll not let this distance keep us apart
as long as my heart has wheels.
-T.A.Green (Timmy the car guy)
And hearts are too
Then for now I’ll be violet
‘Til I’m back there with you
If the birds sing sweet
Each morning so new
Then for now I’ll not listen
‘Til I’m back there with you
If stars sparkle brightly
In the night sky above
Then for now I’ll be cloudy
‘Til I’m back with your love
If I touch a picture
Or a keepsake or charm
Then for now I’ll remember
‘Til you’re back in my arms
If I love you
And you love me
Then let’s stay together
For all eternity!

….for my Lacey, with love…on Valentines Day
On a lovely summer day
Down by the water
At the Cargo Café
Notes on a paper tablecloth
Written with crayons and smiles
Colorful paintings hung on the walls
Done with childlike innocence and style
Looking into each others eyes
Feeling the love we share
Talking about our times to come
Dreams of what and when and where
So many lunch dates still await us
So many places to be together
My heart, like Jimmy Buffett sings
“I wish lunch could last forever”
-T.A.Green 9/11/2001
Just as the flowers need the rain
So too was it God’s wisdom that man should not be alone
And so He created woman
Because He cared for them both with love eternal
It is only with his mate that man will ever be truly complete
God decreed that they twain should become one flesh
To be as one in heart and mind and soul
Never to rule over one another
But to always be at each others side
To give generously of their patience, kindness, gentleness
And above all else, love eternal
To be honest, trustworthy and loyal
To share both the trails and the joys life will bring
To savor each journey, to relish each day
To never see an end to their future
To never forget all they’ve learned from their past
To hand down a legacy of love eternal
So let us begin together
With these precious hearts we’ve found
On a path that brings us forever closer
To show each other all the wonders to behold
To shelter each other through any storm
To always give the gift most prized
This I give to you, as God gave to me
Take this hand I offer
And with it, my life to share
My gift to you of Love Eternal

…for my Lacey, for our wedding day and all our tomorrows.
On her island far away
Yet her love still reaches me
Her whispers to me say,
“My Love, My World”
Within my heart they echo
As I send them back to her
Each time more passionate as they go
The words work wonders
As if they labor with might
To carry cables of dreams and girders of spirit
Time and again, day and night
Until they raise a bridge
Stronger than any span
A bridge of love between us
For this woman and this man
Loneliness and sorrow shall find no passage there
Cast pain to the sea as feet take wings
To be together without a care
The warm embrace, the tender kiss
The joy of you that lights my way
The love that built a bridge between our hearts
A bridge that’s built to stay
-T.A.Green 7/2000
….another of my first to my Lacey…my first rhyming poem…and one of my all time favorites
is a beautiful thing to see
forever renewing yet still the same
like the love between you and me
water shooting ever skyward
sparkling in the bright sunlight
raining into the pool below
reflecting the moon and stars at night
seasons come and seasons go
even through the winter chill
when the fountain becomes a sculpture of ice
waiting patiently while still
the waters' never ending cycle
defines the love I feel inside
a tiny cupful says "I love you"
but the whole fountain cannot hide
let all the world see this love of mine
as we drink our daily part
a lifetime of cups cannot run dry
this fountain of our hearts
the shimmering water and the artistic stone
show what two things together can be
completing each other into a thing of wonder
such is this love with you and me.
-T.A.Green
...for my Lacey, who listens while she sleeps
was my first gift you see
my heart in your caring hands
crowned with my loyalty
this symbol from the ancients
that has stood the test of time
tells of something good and pure
a love like yours and mine
always given, never purchased
just like true love must be
forged with tender patience
as it's been for centuries
so this simple gift
I placed on your finger that day
became a token of things to come
for it's your love that lights my way
maybe a marrige of hearts
took place between us that eve
my soul felt such comfort
that I never wanted to leave
so with this tiny ring
has begun a life so grand
with such joy I await the day
She'll place a claddagh on my hand
-T.A.Green 6/5/2001
I hear you laugh
and my heart sings
you bring such happiness
to every little thing
I see you smile
and your face just glows
how do I deserve such joy?
only heaven knows
I smell your perfume
when I hold you close to me
the scent lingers so lovely
until you're all my mind can see
you fill all my senses
with your love so pure
you make me believe deep inside
there's nothing we can't endure
so caring for such a heart
is a mission I'll gladly take
to devote myself to forevermore
to help our lives take shape
to dry any tears
that by chance might fall
to always be there to love you
to eternally give you my all
-T.A.Green
Captured in black and white
Visions of natural beauty
Printed in colors both dark and bright
Expressions on many faces
Each but a moment of their lives
Some forgotten and some cherished
Reminding us of when we laughed and cried
Images of our ancestors
Eyes from history we never knew
Some seem to almost speak to us
As if through us they live anew
Images of mankind’s achievements
Both the mighty and the small
From toys in the hands of children
To buildings and statues standing tall
With such care she works this time machine
That can never fill her thirsty eye
Oh for an endless roll of film
That she might seize the Earth and sky
I wish someday for a special camera
With a lens to see the beauty of her mind
The tenderness and warmth within her heart
All the love I feel and cannot hide
One day soon we’ll stand together
In a photo that would almost come to life
That will be the most precious image of all
The day we become man and wife
-T.A.Green 5/21/2001
As a storm clutches the city
People seek the shelter of their cars and homes
Their uneasy feelings shaken by the darkness and rolling thunder
Then lurk those with evil in their hearts
To prey upon the fears of innocent souls
But then the lightening strikes
And a terrible shadow is cast
The silhouette of pointed ears and scalloped wings spread wide
Like a gauntlet it covers them
As they feel their blood run cold
For they know this is no constable
But a dark avenger with a code all his own
They know he will not kill
Yet some have prayed for death
Rather than face the pain of reckoning at his hands
They know he will use no firearm
Still their own weapons find nothing but the night air
As he closes with swift, ninja-like stealth
Their sinews tremble as their thoughts suddenly long…
For the safety of caged doors and barred windows
The one haven where he does not tread
Better to regain consciousness there,
Than hung by the ankles ten stories above
So let no innocent heart fear the lightening
Or the eerie moonlight
When above, from the gargoyles lair
They catch a glimpse
Of the Shadow of the Bat!
T.A.Green
...I was inspired to write this poem when was trying to find a way to express to my then wife-to-be why I am such a huge fan of the Batman. I think this poem personifies what so many of us wish for. That there was such a man everywhere you go. A man that every criminal would be so terrified to run into that the streets would be a safe place once again.
