~Josh Gagnon~

Plot: Three convicts escape from prison, set during the 1920-1930’s. If you read the Odyssey then you should notice a couple similarities as the movie rolls on. Ulysses played by George Clooney takes along his two friends on an adventure that put them through beatings, pleasure, a hit song, and getting Ulysses family back.

: I really can’t say anything negative about this movie, sure the music is mostly bluegrass, which isn’t to my liking, but it fit the movie, so I can’t say there could be a better soundtrack. After a couple minutes of thinking about the movie, there wasn’t anything major that deserves to be in here, so I’ll just move on.
: Where should I start? Every character in here was interesting so I’ll just run down whomever I can think of. George Clooney’s character was a talkative, witty, vain, man with a purpose. He seemed on a different level from his two counterparts, always wanting to look his best, with his “Dapper Dan” hair gel…grease…oil, whatever you like to call it. John Turturro and Tim Blake Evans both play the goofy sidekick roles. They fit in nicely and actually had some brains; they weren’t just Beavis and Butthead in prison clothes.

John Goodman’s role as the bible salesman, turn ass kicker/frog killer was quite funny. The Richard Simmons nightmare of a plump mayor and son vs. the KKK leader wannabe mayor is a nice mini-plot that pops up throughout the movie. Finally, my favorite character is the young black man who “sells his soul” to the devil so he can play the guitar better, what an idea!

Just about every scene or adventure they go through could be mentioned in this, but I’ll just go with the one that made me laugh the most. “Baby face” George T. Nelson flying down the dirt road, with money flying out the windows, and hitting a road bump causing his car to nosedive into the dirt. Then asking the three convicts for directions and giving them a ride, while being chased by the cops. Why was this funny? He pulls out a tommy gun and shoots at the cops, sees a field full of cows, and opens fire on them, it was so out of the blue, and I couldn’t help but crack up. An even funnier part occurs right after, but I don’t want to spoil everything, so go get the movie cheap ass.

End: This is just a good movie, I was hesitant to watch it, but did in school and glad I did, it’s really a lot better then I ever thought. I find it to be mostly a comedy, and if you read “The Odyssey” it makes it even more interesting trying to pick out the parts that were in the book. Must get movie, they make the KKK look like the next Riverdancers in this movie, that alone is worth the watch.
I give this movie a 4 ½ stars, for just an all around enjoyable movie for just about anybody. I can’t give it a 5, because I didn’t enjoy it as much as my other movies that I’ll be giving 5’s to.
