Derek (James Marsden), Jones (Lena Headey), and Travis (Norman Reedus); three self-absorbed college roommates, do a sociology class project on gossip. The object? Start and track a rumor to determine how people interact with and believe other people. The base of their project is relatively likable Beau (Josh Jackson) and virginal Naomi (Kate Hudson); a notoriously abstinent couple, due to Naomi's vow to wait until marriage. At a club, Derek, Jones, and Travis spot a somewhat intoxicated Naomi and Beau making out. Derek follows the two upstairs where Naomi passes out and Beau, respecting Noami's vow, takes her home. However, Derek starts the rumor that Beau had sex with her while she was unconscious. Soon, the school is in a frenzy, especially when Naomi finds out and promptly dumps Beau in a very public scene. Afterwards, Jones goes to speak to Naomi, and finds that Derek has been hiding a very dark past from her and Travis, who soon finds himself betrayed by Derek as the events snowball until more accusations, arrests and even a suicide occur.
