He finds out that Mao Yenrai is dead, and so Spike decides to go after the killer. So, as Spike is about to do so, he gets a call from Faye saying that she's been kidnapped by Vicious and will be killed if they don't go to get her. Spike goes to get her, but Jet doesn't. Spike meets them at an abandoned cathedral, where he finds himself face to face with Vicious for the first time in a long time. Spike finds Faye in danger, and shoots the person about to kill her. This becomes a long, bloody shootout. Faye escapes, and Spike is alone with Vicious in the abandoned cathedral. Vicious stabs Spike out of the cathedral window. As Spike falls, he sees all of his life flash before his eyes, mostly from his dark past. He sees the times when him and Vicious used to be friends, and right before he falls he sees the person who used to sing for him, to make him better. After three days, Spike wakes up, covered in bandages on the Bebop with Faye watching him. He tells Faye that she sings off key. Jet realizes that Spike is his old self again.

Sympathy For The Devil:
Waking up from a bizarre flashback, Spike finds himself in a blues club listening to a child prodigy play some blues. Spike and crew are looking for their newest bounty, a guy who goes by the name of Giraffe. Giraffe is trying to kill Zebra, who is the guardian of Wen, the child prodigy playing the blues. But, just as Spike is about to catch Giraffe, he dies. He leaves Spike with a gem his last wish, to help the one who fools people with the way he looks. Jet finds out from his friend Fatty that Giraffe and Zebra were friends, and part of the "Self Defense Volunteer Squad" together ten years ago. Then, Zebra disappeared and ten years later, reappeared with Wen. So, Spike confronts Zebra and Wen to help him. Wen reveals to Spike that he is actually really old, but his child-like body is unable to change, through age, or through wounds. Spike and Wen get into a shootout. Wen escapes, but Spike rescues Zebra. Through reading Zebra's brain waves, they find that Giraffe's gem is the key to killing Wen. So, Spike uses the gem as a bullet and fires it into Wen's head, killing him finally, and doing him something of a favor.
