FAQs about NEGADUCK

1. Who is Negaduck?

a. He's pretty much Darkwing Duck's 'evil twin' . As his name implies, Negs is a very
negative character--though that's putting it rather mildly. In terms of evil, I'd say he's
somewhere between Genghis Khan and The Antichrist (you're right, that's not funny).

2. What was Negaduck's origin?

a. It's pretty confusing, really, and don't think fanfic writers haven't had a field
day with it. The
Darkwing Duck episodes gave us three different versions of the
character, all of them equally rotten: in "Negaduck" , Megavolt shoots Darkwing
with a tron-splitting ray. The result is there are
two Darkwings, one completely
nice and the other one evil--sort of a Jekyll & Hyde thing with DW's positive and
negative traits seperately personified. Finally, the two personalities duel it out
until Megavolt zaps them back together.

But: "The Secret Origin of Darkwing Duck" suggests that both Negaduck and
Darkwing were born on the planet Zipton, that Negs is actually DW's evil cousin.
His equally evil father (allegedly) destroyed the planet (though it was probably
the accidental work of DW's father...yes, I'm confused too), but both infants
escaped the disaster--DW to grow up into the legendary crimefighter, and Negs
to be his own bad self.

Finally, in "Life, the Negaverse and Everything" we're given a glimpse of a hellish
alternative universe that's Negaduck's own psychotic little playground. There,
everything is the opposite of Darkwing's own world; so this seems to suggest that
Negs is simply an evil opposite of DW. (Incidentally, I wonder how many fans bought
into that "Zipton" theory?)

3. Why does Negaduck dress the way he does--the red fedora, etc.?

a. According to Zebrecka at her site St. Canard at Sunset, the colors of Negaduck's
clothes are the exact opposite of the color spectrum from those of DW's outfit (it's
true! I even checked). She also added that certain venomous snakes have those same
colors (the irony is no accident). Then there's that black mask, which lends a pretty
mysterious
and villainous quality to the character. But don't you still wonder if Negs
doesn't dress like that to freak everybody out? Though you have to admit, he
does look
kinda sexy...

4. While we're on that subject: just why do female fans think Negaduck
is 'sexy' ?

a. Honestly, I puzzle over that question constantly (when I'm not fantasizing about
him myself...oh, sorry). Sometime, all of us fan femmes need to get together and discuss
the reasons we love the bad guys. Only a small percentage of us girls actually
approve
of the bad stuff they like to do (okay, sometimes it
is fun to watch them misbehave);
most of us simply swoon over their roguish qualities. Maybe it's that black mask and
cape--they sort of give Negs that 'Zorro' look. It's like with DW's outfit--that fedora, cape
and mask definitely give the characters a debonair quality. I mean, why fight it, ladies?
For all his badness, Neggy's just a CUTE little booger.

5. But with that fedora, he looks like a pimp.

a. And with my short black skirt, I look like a hooker (don't worry, I'm not). As for
Negs, somehow I doubt he
has that kind of time...he's having too much fun blowing
up buildings and torturing innocent people and junk.

6. Does Negaduck have a girlfriend?

a. Only in the world of fandom. He does pretend to be in love with DW's sweetheart
Morgana in "My Valentine Ghoul", but as always it's with his own interests in mind.
There are lots of fanfics out there that give him a lady friend, even a wife sometimes.
In the DWD episodes, Negaduck doesn't seem to care about anybody (except himself,
of course). But who knows what might happen with the love of a good woman...or even a
bad one?

7. Why does Negs hate bunnies and flowers, but love skulls???

a. Well, being such a mean and rotten guy, Negaduck hates anything sweet and
cute. The skulls are nice and scary, which Negs loves to be. Maybe it's a 'pirate'
thing with him, I dunno.

8. Why is Negs so evil?

a. Er...maybe he's born that way? "The Secret Origin of Darkwing Duck" seems to
suggest that (but then, look at his parents ^_~). But unless his brain chemistry had
a glitch in it (like Rhoda in the movie
The Bad Seed ), it's hard to believe. Even Hitler
wasn't born a bad person (he just turned into one later on), so it's possible that Negs
wasn't either.

Some fanfiction writers give the suggestion that Negaduck's personality came out of
an abusive childhood, and a violent one at that. Psychological studies of serial killers
and other violent criminals show that, with few exceptions, the subjects came out of
broken homes or suffered traumatic experiences that twisted their moral outlook. It
would not be surprising that Negs' need to control others, his love of violence and
his shunning affection could be the result of a time when he felt victimized himself.
The jury's still out about that skulls and bunnies problem, however...

9. So you're suggesting that Negaduck's evil because he had a
traumatic childhood, or a dysfunctional family.

a. Well, I'm no shrink (though sometimes I think I need one); but I've read enough
books and watched enough TV to get a good idea. Sometime, it would be really
interesting for someone to publish a book dealing with the psychology of cartoon
characters.

Moreover, it's not true that every person coming from such an environment turns
to crime--nor that every criminal came from a broken home in the first place. Some
people commit crimes out of greed, hatred, or simply for the heck of it (Leopold and
Loeb are a good example).

But who knows? Maybe Negs just likes being rotten. And we have to admit, he's so
good at being bad.

10. Then isn't it possible that Negaduck is simply a wounded soul--who,
with the right therapy, kindness, understanding and loving attention, might
give up his evil ways?

a. I would love to answer your question, but Negs is laughing so hard I can't hear it.

11. Okay, let me put it this way: Negs is just a heartless scumbag who likes
being mean and nasty?

a. *blinks* Uh, okay, Negs just stopped laughing---but he'd like you to repeat that
question while he's getting his chainsaw.

12. Er, never mind. But what's this thing he has about being called LORD
Negaduck?

a. If he comes at you with that chainsaw, you'll call him anything he wants.

13. Does Negaduck have any children?

a. Technically, only one--the opposite of Darkwing's Gosalyn in the Negaverse. But she's
either adopted like the other Gosalyn or simply just living with him by some strange quirk
of fate. Considering that this Gosalyn is so sweet and helpless (not "spirited" like Darkwing's),
in stark contrast to both Negaduck and the Negaverse Launchpad (who's just this side of
"The Terminator"), it looks to be a pretty scary situation for the poor kid. Surprisingly, though,
she doesn't seem unhappy around Negs or frightened of him in
any way; so apparently,
Negs isn't unkind to her or just keeps his distance. Or maybe he's nice to her when no one's
looking (but I won't say that too loud while he's still holding that chain saw).

But then, I'm only talking about what we see in the Darkwing Duck episodes. Fanfic writers
have seen to it that Negs' family has branched out all over the place---so who knows how
many other ducklings he's adopted or sired?

14. NEGS: Are you through???

a. *glancing nervously at Neg's chainsaw* For now-- yes.

15. NEGS: Then shuddup and finish building this site!

a. Yes, yes, Lord Negaduck! *ahem* All right, moving right along...
