EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS
The Outlaw of Torn

Who was Norman of Torn, the terrible outlaw, the fame of whose daring exploits was ringing through all England? Where did he come from? Was he of noble blood, as some thought, or a base born churl? All that Norman of Torn knew about himself was that he had been raised by an old Frenchman in the decrepit Castle of Torn and that he had been taught swordsmanship, French, horsemanship and a hatred of the English. Even at the age of seventeen he was the greatest swordsman in England and his reputation as a fearless outlaw had traveled far and wide. At eighteen there was a tremendous price upon his head. At nineteen he was the leader of a fierce robber band of more than one thousand men of all kinds, from nobleman to serf; the only requisites for admission being willingness and ability to fight and an oath to obey the laws made by the Outlaw of Torn.
