The I. S. Ranch was originally the Metcalf Ranch, a working cattle ranch. Jim Smart purchased the ranch and renamed it the J. S. Ranch. As Tom Core describes to David Rothel in "An Ambush of Ghosts", Smart had a branding iron made with the J.S. but that it fell, breaking the tip of the "J" off, hence the I.S.
