KANAB MOVIE RANCH

The Kanab Movie Ranch is located in Kanab Canyon (Angel Canyon), approximately 5 miles north of Kanab. Although the ranch ceased operation around 1985, the sign leading into the site remained in place until about 1993.
The site is now owned by the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. The road that winds through the canyon is open to the public and you can view the entire site from the roadway.

When I first contacted the ranch in the late 1970's, there were still three movie sets on the property. At this time, one of those sets has been moved--the set used by Clint Eastwood in "The Outlaw Josie Wales" was purchased by Ray Lopeman and moved to his Lopeman's Frontier Town in Kanab. The sets that remain at the ranch site are a barn built by Walt Disney for the feature "One Little Indian" and a stone building supposedly built by Tom Mix, but it was not there when "The Lone Ranger" filmed there, was there when I visited, and is now long gone.


"The Lone Ranger" television series used the area quite extensively during its color season, as well as a number of other television shows, including "How the West was Won", "Death Valley Days", "Have Gun, Will Travel", "Gunsmoke", "Wagon Train", "Lassie", "Route 66", "Daniel Boone", and "F Troop".

"Kanab Movie Ranch features the world's largest cookout cave, movie sets, cliff dwellings, underground lake, horseback riding, hiking, off-highway tours, and camping.
