::Hermes continued to fill his days down in the Underworld by either examining the things he stole, or borrowed in his words, from mortals, or just flitting to the upperworld itself to scope things out or to get some food. Belit was tired of his constant coming and going, but she was getting quite a stockpile of valuables from him in form of payment and that more then made up for her aggrivation. She didn't count the things he brought her from above ground as his rent as he told her they were just gifts, an extra bonus if you will, and Belit wasn't about to argue.
She now possessed enough gold coins, silver, and gems to buy herself anything she so desired. She even used the more undesirable gems to pay off Pain and Panic when they began to snoop around her office looking for Hermes. The two-some always seemed so eager to find the blue messenger and when they failed they became very nervous and upset. Belit knew that it was Hades' doing, but what could he possibly want the flighty God for? Knowing Hades, Belit and Hermes both would find out his plans sooner or later, but for now, the Dark Lord stayed quiet in his motives.
Finishing her sorting of a few miscellaneous papers, Belit stood and walked to the filing cabinet where Hermes seemed to have made his temporary home and opened one of the drawers. The little God leapt from the metal resting spot and hovered at Belit's side.
"What'cha doing, babe?" he asked, leaning over her shoulder to watch.
She rolled her eyes and continued on with her work. "You know very well what I'm doing, Hermes. You've been down here long enough to know I'm organizing all the papers of the cosmos."
Hermes cocked his head and rested his Caduceus on his left shoulder. "Well, isn't that just too nutty?" he commented and flitted to her desk. "In that case, babe, I'm like, gone, heh."
She turned quickly and pointed at her desk warningly, "Just be careful over there, Wingboy! I got tons of stuff to categorize today and I don't need you messing them up!"
"Relax, babe, when have I ever messed things up down here? Anyhoo, I'm gonna go up and get some snacks and stuff and'll be back in a flash. See ya, babe!" and with that, Hermes dropped a silver coin on the desk and disappeared from the room.
However, before he left, his Caduceus managed to just nick the edges of a stack of papers on Belit's work area and suddenly the front of her office was a snowstorm of documents. Hearing the rustling, Belit turned just as the papers were begining to settle down on the stone floor. The Goddess made a stifled choking sound and gaped as all of her hard work went fluttering to the floor. Gritting her teeth and clenching her fists were the only ways she could filter her anger right now, but she knew that when Hermes returned he was going to pay for this dearly.
A few hours later, the little blue messenger flew through the Personnel door and hovered at Belit's desk holding a white bag in one hand and a cardboard carrier with two drinks in the other. "Ok, dig, I flew by this wacky place called Burger King and I just wanted to scope what this nutty King looked like, and wouldn't you know, there isn't a king at all! Man, I tell you, mortals sure come up with some zany names for things. Oh, but they do make some fabulous meals. I got you some hamburgers and fries, but this cola stuff is the most," he chuckled and took a swig from a straw protuding from one of the cups.
Belit looked up at him coldly and pointed to a little stand next to her desk. "Put the food down there now, I have something I need to discuss with you," she said as calmly as she could, but Hermes sensed something was very wrong. Flitting to the table to set the bag and drinks down, Hermes then flew back to her and leaned his Caduceus on his left shoulder to await her comments. Taking a deep breath, Belit stood and pointed to the mess of papers that still remained on the floor. "I asked you to be careful and to watch it with your zipping in and out of here, but you didn't listen. Look at what you did before you left today!" she cried, but still maintained control. "I spent hours organizing them and you messed them up in a matter of nano-seconds."
Hermes frowned and lowered his purple lensed glasses and peered at the mess over the rims, softly clucking his tongue more to himself then anything. "Ah, gee babe, I'm sorry. I'll help you pick them up don't worry."
"Oh no, you aren't going to just pick them up blue boy, you're going to organize them and file them! They go in alphabetical order and go in the third drawer in the cabinet you sit on all the time, so get to it because you aren't going above ground anymore 'til that mess is fixed!"
The messenger jumped in the air and gave her a salute and handed her his staff, "Sure thing, babe. Take five." He dove down and flew rapidly around the papers scooping them up in one big armload. He then made his way to an open area and, with hands moving faster then eyes could comprehend, he began to sort the papers. Completing his task in mere seconds, Hermes then tore off to the cabinet and opened the drawer the files went in and dropped them in the proper place and was soon back hovering in front of Belit. "Ah, how's that?"
Belit just stood with her mouth opened and stared off in complete shock and disbelief. "What...h-how...?" she stammered and turned her head to look at him, eyes wide with questions.
Hermes just shrugged and took his Caduceus from her and leaned it on his shoulder. "Like, you wanted those zany things organized, babe. I only did what you requested. Do you have anything else that needs to be done or can I go eat my lunch?"
The Goddess slowly shook her head and waved him off, dismissing him from anymore tasks. "No...it's fine. Go eat your food," she said softly and walked to the file cabinet where Hermes put the papers. She reopened the drawer and riffled through the documents and gasped quietly seeing they were all in perfect order, not one misplaced. Turning quickly, she looked at Hermes who was hovering a few feet from her desk munching on a burger. "This is amazing. Hermes, you did a days work in seconds!"
He nodded and took a drink of cola from his cup. "Yeah, that's common for me, babe. Like, how else do you think anything gets done like that up on Olympus? I can move fast, but normally choose to take things slow just to enjoy them, but something like this should be done quickly to leave more free time, dig?"
"Yeah, I dig alright." Belit made her way back to her desk and plopped down on the chair still in shock over what just took place. She ran a hand through her red hair and looked up at the blue God hovering before her. "Herm, I think I just found a way for us to have a little more fun down here."
Hermes quirked a dark blue eyebrow at her and put his drink down on a clear spot on her desk. "The Underworld fun? Whoa, what a concept!" he chuckled, but was shushed by Belit.
"No, listen. If you help me finish off my work like this all the time, I'll have the chance to have some fun with you and also answer all your questions about this day and age and you can tell me what you want about the past you came from. How does that sound?"
He laughed and lowered his glasses to peer at her over the rims, "Yeah, but it sounds more like I'm doing all the work, babe. What do I get out of it?"
Rubbing her chin, Belit tried to think of something to repay him for his chores. She almost said it was his "rent," but she was already charging him by taking the gems and coins he recieved as tips from mortals. Grinning widely she commented, "Why, you get to spend time with me. Isn't that enough?" She then batted her eyes playfully at him getting a laugh from him as well as herself. "No, seriously, I could just bring you food so you won't have to go get it yourself all the time and maybe if you're a good boy, I'll see what I can do about getting you some keyboards."
Hermes perked up at the mention of food and especially music. "Whoa! Babe, like, that would be perfect! Fabulous, like, count me in then!" he cried and held out a hand for her to shake and close the deal. Belit took his hand in hers and knew that for the first time in centuries she was going to have some ease in her never-ending workload.
The days past and Hermes proved himself to be a worthwhile helper. Papers, books, and scrolls were put away faster and neater then ever thought possible. Things were getting more and more organized and Belit was stunned to see exactly how much room there really was in her office and the vast hallways that made up Personnel now that things were cleaned up. As if that wasn't enough, the little messenger rid the entire place of the dust and cobwebs that seemed to linger everywhere and set little vases with flowers in them around the office to add that special touch. The room took on an atmosphere not seen in the Underworld before and not only did it affect Belit in a positive way, but it seemed to help the departed souls as well.
Although she couldn't bring him keyboards like she had hoped, Belit still delighted in hearing Hermes play the violin that Hades had given him. Music always put the little messenger in high spirits and once he was done playing he would chat endlessly about the music scene of his time and of now. Together, the immortals shared many topics of conversation and Belit was finding the blue messenger's company more and more enjoyable as the days went on. Hermes still did venture above ground many times, but not as much since he began to help Hades' secretary with her work.
Now with her workload reduced to almost nothing, Belit had the time to lounge about during work hours, but she kept a pen and small stack of papers near just in case Hades came calling on her again so it would look like she was busy. He would probably dump triple the ammount of work on her for having the help of a little blue God and he would no doubt take Hermes and lock him up someplace until Zeus would take him out of here and back to his own time.
Furrowing her brow, Belit pondered that for a moment. Hermes sure was down in the Underworld for a long time. Where could Zeus and Cronos be? She knew that those two didn't exactly get along, but one thing for sure, Cronos didn't like anyone messing with time and would put all differences aside to correct a problem like this. Reaching forward, the Egyptian Goddess grabbed her Dilbert desktop calendar and started counting the days that Hermes was stuck in this world. Actually, it wasn't accurate for she only kept track of the days from the time she found him playing his violin to Cerberus, but still the count was good enough.
Getting to the fifth day, Belit heard singing behind her and lost count. "Hermes, shush, I'm trying to figure something out," but the singing didn't stop and only seemed to have gotten louder. "Hermes, please!" Belit responded, louder herself.
Putting her finger back on the calendar she began to count again when Hermes loudly shouted out, "I wanna rock and roll all night, and party every day!"
Belit jumped from the yelled out song verse and quickly spun around on her desk chair to glare at the little blue God. She then began to laugh seeing why he didn't hear her. The messenger had his headphones on and was moving his hands in the air as if he were playing drums. His purple lensed glasses were low on his nose and she could see that his eyes were shut in concentration to what he was doing. Rolling her eyes and setting the calendar back on the desk, Belit stood and went over to the deity who was still singing, but not as loudly as before.
Reaching forward, Belit pulled at his headphones to expose his ears and said loudly over the music, "Hermes, knock it off! I'm not in the mood to hear KISS coming from your mouth, got it?"
Hermes blinked and grinned broadly at her, "Oh, like, hi babe...I didn't know you were there."
"Of course not, you had those things on loud enough to wake the dead," she muttered and leaned against the wall near the cabinet Hermes resided on.
Hermes removed his headphones and put them to the side before shutting the tape off. "Man, those cats can sing! Dig their look too, babe," He grinned and showed Belit the cover of the tape he was listening too. "I think I dig the cat dude, but that guy with the tongue, too nutty," he chuckled and stuck out his tongue in the same manner as the painted man on the tape cover.
Belit rolled her eyes and tried not to laugh because she knew it would only encourage him. "Gee, you look just like him, but you're lacking the hair."
Hermes snickered and adjusted his glasses. "That was fun. I think I should go get more tapes, these ones are getting worn out," he commented while he removed the cassette from the tape player and put it back in its case. He then turned slightly and put the KISS tape back on top of the pile of cassettes he stole from someplace in the upper world.
Belit moved forward and peered at the titles of his tapes never giving them much thought before. Much to her surprise the little messenger had a vast array of musical tastes ranging from Lawrance Welk, to The Beach Boys and Elvis, Celtic music, and Clint Black. She smiled up at him and nodded to the tapes, "You got quite a collection going there, Herm. I never thought you'd have such a interest in all that kind of music."
Hermes puffed out his chest slightly and flew off the cabinet, twirling his Caduceus lightly between his fingers, "Babe, like, I dig all the music I've been hearing. Even some of that rap nonsense sounds good, but not alot. Man, talk about dulls-ville. Like, anyone can just talk with music playing. It takes real talent to actually sing a song."
She smirked at him and folded her arms in front of her chest, "Oh yeah, like you were singing a few seconds ago to that heavy metal tape of yours?"
Hermes blushed and nodded, "Oh yeah, I dig singing and if this music keeps getting better, I don't think I'll ever want to leave his happening place." He lowered his glasses and gave her a wink before flitting over to the bookshelves to find something new and exciting to read. However, Belit was still reeling from what he said. He would actually choose to stay here in the Underworld over going home to his own time to be with his family and friends? She blinked in disbelief and walked slowly towards him. "Hermes, have you seen Hades lately?" she asked wondering if maybe the Lord of the Dead said something to the messenger to sway him from wanting to go home to his own time.
He paused from his searching and looked at her blankly, his dark blue eyebrows lowered in confusion, "Who?"
"Hades! You know, kinda tall and greyish with a blue flame of hair. C'mon Herm, you know exactly who he is," she said with impatience not understanding why Hermes didn't know who Hades is. At first she thought he was just teasing with her, but the still blank look on his face proved to her that something just wasn't clicking with him.
He shrugged and went back to looking at the books on the shelf, "Well, uhhh no, I haven't seen him or anyone other then you and that zany three headed dog down here, babe. Why do you ask?"
"Just wondering," she trailed off and thought she would try something else to test his reaction. "You know, he was just looking for you because you are too 'goody goody' for his tastes and he wants to change your ways by making you suffer down here until he can corrupt you and bend you to his will."
The blue god turned and laughed softly before flying up about ten feet from Belit, singing loudly, "Look at me I'm Sandra Dee, lousy with virginity! Won't go to bed 'til I'm legally wed. I can't, I'm Sandra Dee!"
Belit sighed and rolled her eyes at his rendition of the Grease song, "Some virgin...in this time frame you and your wife got ten kids."
Her words had no impact on him and instead he sang another song, "I don't drink don't smoke. What do you do? Don't drink, don't smoke. What do you do?"
Now Belit began to get annoyed, "Will you knock it off and listen to me, this is serious! What is the matter with you? You've been acting more goofy then usual."
"They're coming to take me away haha they're coming to take me away ho ho hee hee. To the funny farm where...," he sang out and was about to lapse on to another phrase when a gasp escaped him instead as a book flew from Belit's hand and hit him square on the head and the clank it made on his helmet echoed down the hall. Dazed, his wings faltered and he and the book fell to the floor.
Satisfied she shut him up and no doubt got his attention, Belit stepped forward and squatted down in front of him, "There, now will you be quiet and listen to me?" she questioned annoyed, but was silenced herself as she noticed the lower lip of the little deity begining to tremble.
He looked up at her over the rims of his purple lensed glasses, his dark eyes slowly begining to fill with tears, "I-I just wanna go home," he sobbed. "Please, I just want to go h-home!"
Hermes then dropped his head to his chest and covered his face with his hands, crying softly. Belit sighed and felt a wave of guilt go through her and she was at a loss as to what she should do now. She never thought she would see him cry like this much less take pity on him, but none-the-less, it was all happening. "Oh, Hermes, you'll get home soon enough, I promise you," she said as soothingly as she could while reaching behind him to retrieve his winged helmet.
She was about to place it back on his balding head where it belonged when she noticed a small bump begining to form where the book hit him. "Aww geez, look at what I did," she commented about the bump and put her hand on his shoulder. "I'm so sorry, Hermy, that's going to hurt under your helmet." Instinctively, she then bowed her head down and tenderly kissed him on the head where she hit him like a mother would to a hurt child. Realizing what she did, she pulled back and sat down waiting for him to flinch and fly back from being touched for she remembered how much Hermes loathed any contact from anyone other then his wife.
However, he never moved and just continued on crying. Belit figured that he just was in shock about being hit and was too caught up in his sorrows to even notice she had touched him much less kissed him. Sighing softly, she reached to him and patted his thin shoulders. "C'mon, you haven't been down here that long. I'm sure Zeus is doing all he can to find Cronos and get you back to your own time so you can be with your family and friends again So, stop your crying, you're gonna get the floor all wet."
Looking up and wiping a tear off the end of his nose, Hermes gave her another one of those blank looks he gave her before when she mentioned Hades to him. He then removed his glasses to wipe off his face and said quietly, "I don't feel very good, babe."
Belit winced not thinking she had hit him that hard to make him sick. She questioned him if he could get up and the blue deity shook his head no. Frowning more, she scooted closer to him, slightly lost as what to do. She doubted she could pick him and put him back on the cabinet, but at the same time he needed comfort and fast. Not caring about his "don't touch me" attitude, Belit sat at his side and draped her arm around his shoulders and held him as close to her as she felt necessary. "Just relax. You'll be ok and later on I'll go above ground and get you something to eat. Sound good?"
Hermes just shrugged and leaned slightly against her side and closed his burning eyes. He felt something just wasn't right anymore, but he couldn't exactly pin-point what it was. He knew he didn't belong here and had someplace else he needed to be, but for some reason everything seemed hazy to him and this Belit chick wasn't making matters any easier for him. The messenger had questions suddenly, questions he honestly didn't know the answers to anymore and ones that he feared knowing more about, but for now, he was just content to sitting on the stone floor with his friend holding him as if protecting him from the very confusion and questions that suddenly plagued his weary mind.
Belit also felt something was wrong, but not for the same reasons as Hermes. It wasn't like him to let anyone get this close to him much less touch him. The blank looks he's been giving her and the forgetfulness weren't making much sense to her either. She had to find out how many days Hermes was down here in the Underworld and more importantly she had to find out what was keeping Zeus from getting the messenger back home to his own time. Belit sensed she had to do it all quickly because something was definately wrong. As to what that wrong was she wasn't exactly sure, but it had to be taken care of quickly before anything else happened and before Hermes became a bigger wreck then she felt he was already becoming.::
