Daniel Alan Radcliffe was born July 23, 1989 in Fulham, West London, England. He is the only child of literary agent Alan Radcliffe and casting director Marcia Gresham and has wanted to act since he was five years old.
After convincing his mother to send in a picture to the BBC for consideration in an upcoming adaptation of David Copperfield, he was cast as the young title character in the 1999 TV movie. He had no previous acting experience.
His next appearance was the minor role of “Mark Pendel” in John Boorman's The Tailor of Panama (2001), starring Pierce Brosnan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Geoffrey Rush.
However, it wasn’t until he was cast as the title character in the new, highly-anticipated screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (…Sorcerer’s Stone in the U.S.) that he was truly thrust into the spotlight. Daniel first met the film's producer David Heyman and screenwriter Steven Kloves one evening at the theater and was eventually invited to audition. Daniel’s parents were initially reluctant, not wanting his hopes to get too high since thousands of other boys would be auditioning for the same part, but after four auditions and screen tests, Heyman called to offer Daniel the role. Dan was in the bath when his father ran upstairs to break the news and was so happy he cried. The movie premiered in London November 4, 2001.
The sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is currently in production and due out November 15, 2002.
