Female Friendly

Not all women involved in the adult entertainment industry are found in front of the camera or come from uneducated rural backgrounds.

Yesterday I had lunch with Pamela, a woman who left corporate America for the wonderful world of porn to find out why she made the jump.

To my surprise, she told of an industry that accepts and respects women who know what they are doing and can get the job done.

“When I first entered the world of adult entertainment, as a woman, the natural response from the guys was ‘Are you talent?’ ” she said. “But that reaction is not that different from my former life in the brick-and-mortar world. I have always worked in male-dominated industries and have been the lone woman in a room full of men who thought I was someone's assistant or the "token" female hire for the company.”

Pamela started her career in marketing for a small industrial equipment company in Cleveland and eventually moved on to start her own company when she was 23.

After completing her MBA, she moved on to take the position of West Coast regional manager with responsibility for an $8 million territory — again, in an industry dominated by men.

Covering 11 states required traveling about 80-90 percent of the time, so the quality of life wasn't all that great.

“I wanted to have my own business again, and I wanted to do something fun,” she said. “The general population would believe that my corporate career choices were much better or more appropriate places for a woman to work, and that I would be treated "better," but I can tell them that they would be dead wrong!”

She has been interested in the world of porn for about five years, and knew that she didn't want to be a producer or content.

“When DVDs For A Buck (an adult movie club that allows its members to create and/or expand their own adult movie collection) presented itself to me, I knew it was a perfect fit,” she said. “Having spent a number of years in marketing and sales for distribution companies, I jumped at the chance to apply my skills to the company.”

Her previous life in the corporate world was exhausting, but had been an excellent training ground for attending webmaster events — the travel, the partying, the late nights — one right after the other, all while working with various people to help grow the business.

“The sales methodology for adult online is a little different in that while you can, and do, buy advertising, you are also "selling" your program to other webmasters so that they will help you promote your product,” she said.

Being online also means that getting feedback from your customer is a little more difficult.

Since you're not in front of them, you rely more on statistics and performance, which can take a little longer to give you a complete picture of what is really going on, not to mention the potential lag time of finding out if what you're tweaking is working or not.

“What I have learned from the industry so far is that it is a more hospitable environment for professional women than most brick-and-mortar industries are,” she said. “I believe that a large part of the acceptance of women in adult is because there are so many women working in all areas of adult.”

From her experience, as long as you are professional and have a good attitude, you can sit down and have a very productive conversation regarding traffic swaps, upselling techniques, new business ideas and promotions with any other program and not be encumbered with the label of "female."

“It doesn't matter here,” she said. “

However she warns that the adult industry, like many others, can be an all-consuming 24/7 business.

“Work hard, but make sure that you take care of yourself in the process,” she said. “Without the relaxation part, you become less effective.”

In Your Face Advertising

Saw this car driving around the valley the other day, it belongs to veteran porn star turned producer Brandon Iron.

Iron currently directs movies for Platinum X Pictures so it is probably no surprise that he drives a mobile advertisement for the company.

However, it isn’t as bad as VouyerMedia.com’s studio on wheels, (yes vouyer is misspelled on purpose to make the line more distinct).

It’s stunts like this that are one of the reasons the government cracks down on porn.

You can't shove this type of content in the faces of young kids driving down the freeway in their parents SUV or mini van, causing them to ask their mothers and fathers uncomfortable questions.

Yes, parents should be talking to their kids about sex, but the time and place shouldn’t be dictated by a ten foot tall half naked chick with the “just give it to me” look on her face.

Porn has done a lot to become more accepted by society, but it only takes a few mavericks to push the envelope to far and ruin things for everyone.

Attracting the Other Half

During my hiatus, I watched a lot of TV while recovering from the FLU and became addicted to a lesbian named Jackie, who is the star of a reality television show called "Workout," aired on the Bravo network.

The boss of a high-rise gym called Sky-Sport that caters to a celebrity clientele, Jackie was on the verge of breaking up with her girlfriend and is presently looking for a new companion.

This being said, the show has caused me to become curious about these two women's relationship, and it has even provoked me to question the differences between the sexual relationships between men and women and women and women.

For the first time, instead of viewing two typically "angry at men" lesbians (which to me is a real turnoff as it shows weakness when a lesbian has this sort of emotional baggage), I just see two people who bring real love and emotional needs to their relationship.

This couple is refreshing, displaying a relationship that is playfully interactive and different from what I'm used to viewing on television.

I love the way they talk to each other and touch each other, as women possess the ability to communicate in a more sensitive and passionately raw way than men. They also really understand each other's intimate needs because they're the same sex.

The power that Jackie has from really knowing and accepting who she is also turns me on, because she has the power that men hold, but she is very much a woman in every way.

The real life relationship between this lesbian couple inspired me to look at how lesbians are portrayed in adult entertainment, specifically the presentations depicted on websites that supposedly show real lesbians in action.

I talked to a fair share of women, both straight and lesbian and for them, the issue is that there seems to be a fundamental difference between the type of lesbian porn that guys want to see and what girls want to see.

The difference being that guys only want to see two gorgeous models (it doesn't matter if they're really lesbians or not) going at it.

Women, on the other hand, want to see what real lesbians do behind closed doors; their attention is held by knowing the truth.

“Fantasies are fun, but knowing what makes a real lesbian tick is the cat's meow,” Sandra, a thirty-year old straight friend of mine said. “I can easily close my eyes and think of something to get off to, but it's knowing and finding out more of the real thing that keeps me coming back for more.”

SapphicErotica.com, one of the most popular lesbian sites, is an example of a typical man's lesbian site. But for Sandra and other women I spoke to, it's just another website with a bunch of pretty girls doing just what guys want them to do for the camera.

It's a beautifully designed site but it is unclear whether it's real or pretend, because it doesn't have anything referring to a real life lesbian's experiences attached to it. There's no personality, interaction, or draw.

“It’s like looking at naked bodies over and over again until they all just look the same,” Mimi, a twenty-five year old lesbian friend of mine said. “It doesn't draw me in to want to know more or pay for more.”

Cyber-Dyke.net on the other hand plays to an audience that wants to see what goes on behind closed doors.

"Welcome to the only erotic entertainment network for women bi women on the web," the web site proclaims in its opening statement.

“The site offers a blog that delivers reality with interaction and while the pictures are still quite sexual, there's a definite chemistry here that's missing in typical male fantasy lesbian porn,” Mimi said.

Sapphosgirls.com, which is a part of the Cyber-Dyke network, offers beauty as well as the chemistry to make women feel like staying around to check out more, and with a statement like "Welcome to the new face of adult sites created for women and by women," what more does a girl need to make her want to see what they're talking about?

Of course, simple teaser text isn't the only ingredient required to inspire an impulse purchase; after all, unless the site truly reflects a feminine vision of lesbian erotica and isn't just the typical 'male fantasy' product claiming to be "by women for women," the women I spoke to aren’t likely to stick around.

Such transparent ruses will send them looking elsewhere.

“There's a handful of sites out there that give a straight girl like me reason to pull out my credit card and quench my thirst, but if it's not for real, then all you'll get from me is Monopoly money, or in other words, if what you're offering me is fake, then don't expect to make a sale,” Sandra said.

But why should the operators of SapphicErotica.com and similar sites care about what women think about lesbian porn or porn in general? Simple, money.

It seems that one of the hardest things for adult website operators to do is persuade women to purchase porn.

But with half of the surfing population made up of women — most of whom are natural born shoppers — it only makes sense for operators to unlock the mystery of getting a girl to loosen her purse strings.

So if you’re looking to take open the purse strings of the opposite sex, ask your girlfriend, wife, main bitch, if she would join your site and incorporate any changes she suggests: it just might be the key to dramatically increasing your bottom line.
