And so we begin... on a dark dark day,...(wicked laughter)...

It was an ordinary day, a great day actually. The sun was shinning the pretty girls were out in shorts. John thought to go to the mall & go shopping. It was an excuse to meet a girl, but his plan was not necessary, not exactly.

John got on the bus, & moved to the back. He took a seat, & began reading. He notices a cute Japanese girl, very cute actually. She smiles at him. He smiles back, & gets up to go talk to her. But just then the bus crashes into a building, he manages to grab the hand rail, & not bang his head. The few people on the bus (John, the girl, a middle aged man, & an old lady) look, and see a zombie attacking the bus driver. The old lady screams, & the man looks in shock. The driver appears to be keeping the zombie at bay, avoiding being bitten, but is pinned back against his seat. It is also noticeable, that 2 more zombies are out side making there way, slowly, towards the bus, which is now half in side a building. *** John runs over to the driver, & pulls the zombie off him. But it is strong, & in retaliation, knocks him away. The zombie then turns back to the driver, & bites him. He screams in pain, & the old lady gasps in horror. The man gets up, & wakes towards John, but just then, the zombies start shaking the bus. The Zombie tackle John, who is smart enough, to use all his strength to push it away immediately, the mans rushes over, & holds the zombie down. “Look out!” cries a female voice, & they look just in time to see the driver come at them, foaming at the mouth, hungering for blood. They manage to pull away, but now they have 2 zombies coming for them. The old lady is shaking, saying her last prayers to a god that is not known for answering calls. “We have to get out of here” says the man. “Come on The emergency exist is in the...” says John, but he is interrupted by the girl. “There are more of them outside.” They all give a quick glance out side, & see one zombie near the exit, & two others not so far away.

***

”To the front,” the man yells, tacking down the walking corpse of the driver. John follows his lead, & takes down the other zombie. They hold them down by the necks, giving time for a plan. “If the someone opens the door, we can go out the front,” says John “ “But where will that take us” asks the man “who knows what’s inside there, we should flee & get help.” “I’m not going out there Sonny,” says the old lady looking out the window. The asian girl flips the lever to the front door, then says “We should go go in there & hide.” The old lady looks scared, so she goes back & helps her get off 1st, then the men shove the zombies to the back of the bus. Once off the bus, they push the door shut, and just in time to catch an arm in the door.

Inside the building, a building, the 4 now stand. “We’re safe! Now what?” asks the girl. “You got us here, I thought you’d know,”” says the middle aged man sarcastically. “Introductions might be appropriate,” says John, breaking the tension. “And who might you be?” The man asks, looking at John. “John, and you?” But there is no response from the man. “I’m Kim,” says the girl, her turn breaking tension. “My name, is Norma,” says the old lady. “Now sonny, what’s your name?” The man hesitates, “my name is Dan. So now that we’re all friends, can we find a way out of here?” “Maybe, “replies John with a smirk. “But is that the best thing to do,” asks kim. “Of course, we need to get home,... is there even food here?” “Who knows” says John “and I’m getting hungry.” “Nothing like almost gettin eaten by zombies to work up a good appetite,” jokes Kim. John & her share a laugh.

Dan is not amused, “We should look around, see what’s here, if we’re gonna stay a while.” The sound of something being slammed is heard. John & Kim look with wide eyes, not so much afraid, as filled with the need to know. Much different from the older two, who are in fear. “Yes, we should.” Says John. “Could be anything,” mocks Kim. The old lady looks openly worried, the others, only show it in a slight glimmer in the eye. “We should be pretty safe, we are inside a building now,” states Dan. John looks at him, “yeah,... a building that just got hit by a bus. Where are all the people, who should be running in panic?” The others stop, with jaws dropped, at this new revelation. “Oh please, let’s just get away from these evil things.” The old lady says, in obvious reference to the zombies, still in the bus.

The group walks out of the room, & into a hallway. They check all the doors there, and John jokes “wouldn’t it be funny if they all were locked. Except the last one.” And sure enough, it is, except one that was only an empty room. Upon entering the new room, they see a slight fire. “Look for a fire extinguisher!” Says Dan, almost commanding, but the others care not about his lack of etiquette at this point. It doesn’t take long, for Dan to find one on the other side of the room, & the fire is vanquished. But just then a fluttering sound is heard. “Gripe, what now?” Mumbles Dan to himself, but loud enough so everyone can hear him. But then it stops, & the smoke clears. A staircase is now seen where the fire once was. They approach it slowly, for it is not in good condition. In fact it is falling apart, & there is not much more, then a slight stripe & the handle bar, going upwards. “Down it is,” says Dan stating what he thinks is obvious. “I can make it up the top,” says John. “So can I, says Kim, “but we should stick together. “Right, replies John, “all of you together!” Kim looks frustrated.

***

”You go down,” says John to everyone, and he quickly heads up the stairs. Kim looks frustrated at his display of ignorant independence, but doesn’t move to stop him, nor does anyone else. They (not able to follow John on the narrow stairs, except Kim who doesn’t want to leave the group) all move down to the basement. It is not an overly remarkable basement, very plain, but it is big. They pan out across the room, not to far but enough to look there own ways. “I have a bad feeling,” says Kim, when all of a sudden a pop, then a continual hissing noise is heard. “Oh dear” says Norma in typical scared old lady fashion, “it’s more of those things.” Dan walks over, & says “probably not, it sounded like a pipe, but that could be a worse problem, if we’re stuck in a building with pipe problems.” “So what do we do?,” asks Kim. “As long as it isn’t more things, continues Norma. “Zombies,” corrects Dan. “I’ll go check it out, watch my back,” he says moving to the big doors where the hissing is coming from, & the ladies follow him.

John runs up the stairs checking each door, second floor; locked, third floor locked. “Damn,” he mumbles to himself, “I hate being wrong.” Just then he gets to the forth floor, & sees no locked door, not even a door at all. He enters the hall & sees another damaged area, with allot of holes in the ground, but plenty of room to maneuver on. He sees many highly rotted corpses on the ground. “Zombies,” he gasps, though no one is around, except the body he sees mutilated at the end of the hallway. He slowly make his way over, & sees a man who is mostly eaten. John quickly looks around, & sees no one, then looks down at the handgun by the guys side. He picks it up & checks the bullets, “one shoot, drat.” It’s nothing fancy, just a revolver, but it has him almost so preoccupied that he doesn’t hear the zombie open the door behind him. Fortunately, zombies are stupid creatures, using instinct to function, and not brains. So seeing it’s kill at hand, it let’s out a moan of hunger. John hears & turns around, he scrambles back to get out of the way, and points the gun at the creature. He almost shoots it but puts it in his pocket. He rises & kicks the thing back. “It’s your lucky day,” he says, then grabs the creature, & throws it down a hole. “Sure hope he can’t open those doors, he says. He quickly searches the man for any more bullets or useful items, but finds none. Then he starts back down to the others. John is walking down the stairs, when a man’s scream is heard.

John races down the stairs to get to the others, he runs into the basement to see a slew of zombies nearing his companions. They are slowly backing away from a room with a large doorway, in it he spies a boiler. He walks over as fast as he can without being obvious, and when he is half way across the room he moves behind a pillar. “Run!” he shouts, the others look and seeing there returned companion pointing a gun there way; they quickly comply. When they are near him, he shoots the boiler, & it explodes, taking out the zombies too. “I don’t think I can fix it now,” jokes Dan. “Look,” says Kim, “you blew a hole in the wall.” “Nice, if only I didn’t send a blazing fire in front of that hole, we could get out of here.” “Where is the fire extinguisher?” ask Norma. “That one, is out, I used it up before, says Dan. “There is sure to be another one,” says Kim. “There’s not much up there, allot of locked doors, more ruined floors, but if look hard...” he pauses. “And I met up with a zombie, that almost made me a snack, so be careful.” “You mean, they eat people for real” ask a suprised Dan. “I’m guessing so,” replies John. “Gross,” says Kim. “Oh god, help us please,” prays Norma.

They all walk up the stairs. They get to the 1st floor, & Kim goes, for the door. “It won’t open,” says John. But Dan, stubbornly, needs to go check anyway. “I told you” John says, then leads the others to the 3rd floor, and tells of his experience here. Just then the fluttering sound is heard again. “Not again” cried Norma. “It’s so loud this time exclaims John.” “Wait,...” says Kim “it’s bats!” Dan runs into the 3rd floor followed by Kim. Norma looks pale with fear, John grabs her, & enters as well, pulling Norma in. Then Dan slams the door shut, & the bats are safely kept on the other side. But what they did not realize, is the ground was not stable enough for there combined weight. It collapses and they all fall down to the next floor, except Kim, who was standing to the farthest part of the sensitive ground, & was able to grab on & pull her self safely up. Fortunately for Norma, she landed on John, so her frail body did not break. But not all is well, Dan hit his head as he fell, & is badly injured.

Kim looks down, & glances around. She spies a table, & jumps onto it, it is very wobbly, but she keeps her balance. John turns his head (as much as he can), “At least someone did a non-crash landing.” Kim smiles, & bites her lip, holding back her urge to chuckle. Kim helps norma up, & John manages to sit up, but Dan is out cold. Just then, a door opens, and a zombie walks out. Kim turns, & meets it with a kick. It falls right near norma, & John pulls her away. “You couldn’t have landed on it, instead of me,” he jokes holding his aching back. But the zombie gets right back up. “How, how do you kill it,” cries Kim, who again kicks the zombie. Norma pulls her necklace out, revealing a cross, & holds it out. “It’s not a vampire,” says John. Kim again launches a kick, but this time, the thing grabs her leg & shoves her down. John pull him self up, & tackles it face down. “Besides, I doubt crosses even work against vampires.” John folds the zombie’s arms behind it back. “Probably just some christian writer, wanting to pass there belief as superior.” He pauses, then looks at the ladies, “anyone got some rope.

Kim looks around, & sees they’re in an apartment. She doesn’t find any rope, but the windows have curtains. Kim takes the tie off, & knots the zombies arms. John glances bak at the window, & smiles. Then he walks over, & picks up a phone. He dials 911, but there is no answer. With a grim look, he looks back at the other three. “We are in serious trouble.” “News flash,” mocks Kim pointing at the zombie. “I just tried 911, the phone still works,... but no one is answering.” Kim puts her hands to her head & shakes it, as if to help her think. “We can’t stay here.” She says, “but what about Dan.” John raises a finger. “You both stay here, I have an idea.” He starts out of the room to a hallway, but turns around abruptly, & goes to the window. John tears the other window’s curtains down, & even takes the valances off. Leaving them with just 2 rods. Kim smiles, “impressive” adds Norma. He tosses one to Kim. Then walks into the other rooms, making sure there are no more walking dead about.

While John is out the 2 women sit & talk (quietly of course). “Do you like him?” Asks Norma. Kim, just shocked by the sudden question (& a strange one at that), gives no response. “I could be wrong here, but I have a sense about these things.” “Y, yes, I do. But don’t you tell him ok.” “Of course, it is between you & he. But if you make it through this, you would be good together.” Kim gets up, and turns around. “Where is he, always going off alone trying to play hero.” Norma takes her hand. “You must excuse his actions. He is trying to impress you, & he is a male of course.” They share a giggle, but a brief one for John comes back. And drinking a can of coke no less. “No mercy,” John mumbles to himself, to low to be heard by the others, as he puts the coke on the table. “The place is safe” he says. “I know this might seem a bit cruel...” He begins, but pauses & walks over to the window, and opens it. They just stare oddly at him, but when he walks over to the tied up zombie, they understand. john picks the undead up, & drags it to the window. He continues “but no chances can be taken,” and he hauls the corpse out the window. “Norma, Kim & I are gonna look around.” Kim gives a half smile & finishes the line “and someone needs to watch over Dan.” “But...” begins Norma. “It’s ok, there’s no zombies here, & no way in.” “And no way out.” States Kim motioning with her head to the door, which is blocked by rubble form the fall. Large, UNMOVABLE, rocks.

“We go out the fire escape.” says a cool calm and collective (not to mention-seemingly all knowing) John. “Of course we will have to jump, can’t have someone-thing climbing in here.” “And what about getting back in?” Questions kim. He only shrugs, “figure that out when we need to!” Again Kim sighs, but goes along. They walk out onto the fire escape, and begin to walk down. It is only a short way. When they get to the 1st floor John looks at Kim. “Where to know, it’s your turn for a big decision?”

***

They race down the street, encountering a group of zombies along the way, but take a detour & out run them. By nightfall, they make it to a hospital. Upon entering, no one is found. “Hello?” Asks Kim, “obviously no one would be here.” “Makes sense, that everyone would disappear for the apocalypse,” jokes John. “Can we avoid gloomy words like that?” They race down the hall, frantically looking around. “Here,” states Kim. “parking garage, left.” They look at each other, & continue their journey.

A short while later, they make it to the garage. There are no lights on, and it is hard to see a even a foot away. They slowly move to an ambulance, an move to open the door. they get a suprise when they find it is unlocked, and a bigger suprise when a male paramedic falls out, & onto the ground. They both jump back, & Kim screams, but not because of the body. John looks, & sees she is held by 2 zombies. One moves as if it will bite her, but John punches it, & he falls. Kim then simply steps to the side, and the other one falls face down on the floor. John kicks it a few times, & Kim jumps in the ambulance. He quickly follows, & shuts the door. “How do we drive, where are the keys?” He asks. “Oh no, please no!” “What?” “I’m guessing,... he, um, has our keys.” “Can you hot wire it?” “Maybe,... but I know we can get the keys.” “OK, how do we...” She is interrupted by zombie pounding on the door “do this?” “I don’t know, I’m putting you in charge.” “Funny,” she says sarcastically. “perhaps, I open the door and distracts them, and you search him for the keys.” John begins to open the door, but the closer zombie stick hand in & grabs his shirt. He quickly shuts the door, taking it’s arm off. Kim looks disgusted, but John smiles. He rolls down the window, and the creature stupidly sticks it’s head inside. It is far to interested in the kill, it does realize John rolls back up the window, and off goes it’s head. He has not time to celebrate, as he is now disgusted, and open the door, to get rid off the head. He opens the door so fast it pushes the headless zombie far away. It comes at John blindly, but has no real idea where he is, and clonk bangs right into the ambulance. He then paces harmlessly around

The remaining zombie lunges at him slowly, & John tackles it. Kim gets out and searches the man for the key. “Uh, John,... he doesn’t have any keys.” “Ok, you were right,” John says tossing the zombie aside, and looks at Kim. “We need to...” he begins but is interrupted by laughter, or the muffled sound of the zombie trying to laugh. They look at the zombie, hold holds out the keys, with a wicked smile. “Ok,” John says, slowly, & calmly, in a supposedly not caring voice. “That is not nice,” & he points his index fingers at it, in a manner that you might a gun.

The zombie moves to a storm drain, and John runs at him again, the zombie this time knocks him down, but he expected it, and pulls the zombie with him. He grabs the keys and back into the ambulance. “Can you handle this?” she asks. “Yes, but as they say; hang on, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride. He starts up the vehicle, and they are on their way out. A few zombies step in the way, but John gladly runs them over. The ride gets bumpy, and Kim say “next time, I drive.” They both laugh, & enjoy a calm ride back to the building.

They arrive back, & look up at the fire escape. “So how do we get back up?” Kim asks, “Did you figure that out yet?” John reaches into the ambulance, and pulls out an umbrella. He raises it to the fire escape, and pulls down, but no luck “Damn,” he says as the umbrella breaks in half. “It worked in Pretty Woman.” “I could get to it, if you boost me up.” He boosts her up, she then extends her hand to him. “If you think you can?” He replies, but she cannot pull him up. “Go on, I’ll find another way in!”

Question: Does Kim go ahead, or follow John?
