BATMAN RETURNS (1992) by DANNY ELFMAN

19. THE FINALE (part 2)

Everything is over. Bruce has lost Selina/ Catwoman. Alfred is driving him home when Bruce notices something that looks like Catwoman's shadow. He gets out and finds a cat. Elfman plays Catwoman's theme one last time. This time it's played only on the celeste, showing how truly beautiful it is.

As Alfred steered the Rolls-Royce through the empty Gotham Plaza, Bruce Wayne stared out the window. Everything was as it had been. Everything had returned to normal. From the shop windows, to the Christmas tree itself, it was as though nothing had ever happened, nothing had ever changed.

But if that was so, Bruce asked himself, why did he feel this terrible ache in his heart?

Alfred turned the car off the main street and onto a shortcut alleyway. As it cruised through the narrow street, Bruce noticed the shadow of a woman cast against the alley wall by the car's headlights. Could it be? Was it - her?

''Alfred, stop the car!'' Bruce cried out, as he blinked in disbelief. He glanced at the shadow again, but now it looked more like a cat than the woman he loved. Still, he had to be certain.

Leaving the car behind, Bruce walked into the alley and searched amid the trash cans for some sign of Selina/ Catwoman. After a moment, he heard a rustling sound from behind.

It was only a cat after all. A black cat. It stared at Bruce a moment. Bruce picked it up before heading back to the car.

''Well,'' Alfred said as he started the engine, ''Come what may… Merry Christmas Mister Wayne''.

''Merry Christmas Alfred.'' Bruce answered. ''Good will toward men…'' Bruce looked at the cat purring contentedly in his lap and smiled melancholically.

''…and women.'' he added.
