GAME MANUAL

Just as in the film The Penguin is trying to take over Gotham City. Batman is Gotham's only hope.

Through 5 levels, from pavement to roof top, you must use your skill and batweapons to disarm all of The Penguin's evil helpers. They are all in the game (The red Triangle Circus Gang, Stilt-walkers. Catwoman and finally, in a roof top battle the destructive Penguin himself).

As Batman works his way round the city he will find a number of things to help him. They can be collected by jumping over the symbol that represents the object.

GRAPHICS: The graphics are a mixed bag. On the first hand there are the almost excellent backgrounds, on the other hand the sprites are too small. The scenery of the game is taken directly from the film, and some locations like Gotham Plaza with the two huge statues and the Penguin's Lair look excellent. Sadly, the sprites haven't much detail.

SOUND: The opening theme heard in the introduction is very good, but the rest of the music in the game is dire and repetitive. There is one single music track for all the levels, and not a good one for that matter. The SFX are just functional.

GAMEPLAY: Batman Returns is a basic side-scrolling beat em up with platform elements. Batman can attack with various moves or jump. His attacks include apart from the fists the batarangs (useful against all enemies), the batdisks (useful against the bikers and the tall clowns), the grappling hook (useful only once in the game) and the bomb (the most powerful weapon). All attacks are performed with the ''Fire'' button, and with ''Spacebar'' the player can switch between weapons. With combinations of the arrow keys and ''Fire'' Batman can perform other moves such as kicks, flying kicks etc. The control response is simply adequate, but the level of difficulty after a while gets too high (I finished a cracked version of the game).

HOW CLOSE TO THE FILM? Very loosely, but there are some characteristic scenes, like Batman rescuing Selina from the clown in the beginning, Batman killing off a big guy with a bomb, Ice Princess' death, the Police hunting down Batman, and Shreck's death from Catwoman. All of these are represented here, but a bit mixed and hard to understand if you can't remember them from the film.

All in all, this is a typical average film -game. Not much on offer for any player. If you like the film and you find the cracked version, just finish it once for curiocity's sake. The backgrounds alone deserve one play to the end.
