Some may remember him as the model of perfect parenting in "Mr. Mom." Others might identify him with the gaudy prankster of the dead in "Beetlejuice." And there are those who will associate him with the Dark Knight of "Batman" and ''Batman Returns''. With a mix-match of odd characters in his hat, Michael Keaton has ran the gamut of acting -- everything from the dramatic to the silly. Despite some occasional flack from the critics, the actor has no regrets. |
|
He's defended his decision to bow out of the "Batman" franchise after two films by saying he just wanted to move on. "I got to the point where I saw a whole lot of other things I wanted to do," he told the Entertainment News Service. "It got to be a question of time. When I do those things and how important is it for me to do this right now? If I hadn't been satisfied by what I did in the first one, I might have said yes. But I'd done it twice and thought I'd done it pretty well. When I added it all up, my heart said not this time." |

Keaton shunned a third outing as Batman for a chance to tackle the role that became the most rewarding of his career -- that of a man dying of cancer in "My Life." "I'll always know that -- when it's all said and done -- I did one thing as a way of making a living that really was a fine contribution," he told syndicated writer Luaine Lee. "Not just in terms of film work, but in the world. People can say, 'I was a huge hit.' Or 'I was a very fine actor.' But it's not often that you can leave something in the world through what you do for a living that will be memorable." |

Keaton was the youngest of seven children. His father worked as an engineer and a surveyor, and the family lived in a large ranch where they raised chickens. He's said he was close to his father, but not in the same way that he is close with his own son. "My dad came from the 'Toughen up, kid' generation," he told the Calgary Sun. "Those men felt deep, but they hid their feelings. As a result, they were not great communicators." |

Keaton married actress Caroline McWillams in 1982. They broke up in 1990, and then he dated Michelle Pfieffer and Kim Basinger. He was also engaged to "Friends" star Courtney Cox for six years. Now Keaton is a bachelor, though not necessarily by choice. "I'm the world's worst bachelor," he explained to the Sun. "I'm very much a family guy. I don't enjoy being single, but that's how things have been working out." |
