Overview:
One of the first projects embarked upon by the combined industries of the Coalition was the construction of a colossal orbital naval yard, from which to refit the warships the settlers had brought with them from Terra.
At the present time it remains the largest single structure, civilian or military, built by the Coalition. The project was so complex and costly it had to be undertaken by a large consortium of civilian and military contractors. Even so, it put an enormous strain on the financial and material resources of the new colony and the project was nearly abandoned several times as the costs spiraled to unprecedented levels.
Originally built for the Navy, the station became privately owned when a high-ranking engineering officer decided he could make better money outside the service and managed to persuade a number of like-minded people to back his
business venture to start a shipbuilding company. Between them, they raised enough capital to lease the station from the Navy for a 25-year period, with the eventual aim of buying it outright.The company was called Cygnus Astra and it has rapidly grown to become one of the Coalition's prime
military contractors as well as a thriving civilian shipbuilder.
Capabilities:
Initially built to service the Coalition's small fleet of warships, the Arcturus station was built with a number of massive pressurised repair facilities, capable of handling any type of vessel from 150,000 ton corvettes to the monstrous 1.3 million ton Admiral Hood - the flagship of the fleet.
With additional docking bays for up to 12 dropships, the Arcturus is capable of handling a high volume of traffic.
A heavy military influence can be seen in the station's design with a cursory glance at its armament. Knowing that piracy was rife in the untamed Periphery, the consortium were keen to ensure that their handsome investment would not fall into the wrong hands, or worse be destroyed by marauding pirates. Because of this, the Arcturus bristles with a staggering array of naval lasers, particle cannon, autocannon and missile launchers, capable of devastating a medium-sized warship with just a few volleys. Point defence duties are handled
by batteries of pulse lasers and anti-missile systems.
As if that were not enough, 2 squadrons of aerospace fighters are also stationed aboard, with one always on standby in case of an attack.
Deployment
The Arcturus was constructed in geosynchronous orbit above Newcastle, in the Coalition's Albion ADR.
