Philosophy of Teaching
All students are capable of learning. Learning is best achieved when students are given an environment that stimulates their interest and which challenges them. Students should find relevance in what they are learning; and should be encouraged to relate their life experiences to their experiences in the classroom.
While students come to the classroom with a wide variety of experiences, whether positive or negative, each student is valuable, and a teacher should make an effort to get to know his or her students individually, in order to meet their needs. It is the diversity of an ecosystem that promotes its prosperity. In the same way, the diversity that is present in a classroom will ensure the progress of all learners. Mutual respect between students, and between the teacher and the students, is fundamental to the learning process. A teacher should always have time for his or her students.
Education is an interactive process. Students and teachers must work together to establish the student’s knowledge of the material. The teacher should facilitate discussions in which all students feel free to participate. Students should have abundant opportunities to practice the vocabulary and skills that they learn in the classroom.
Teachers must set an example for their students by constantly and consistently being in the pursuit of knowledge. This can be achieved by regularly setting personal and professional goals, and by striving to achieve them. A stable classroom atmosphere helps students to focus on their growth and development; effective classroom management skills minimize the necessity for disciplinary measures.
Finally, good teachers must stand as valuable and supportive resources for both their students and their colleagues. All parties benefit from an environment which promotes education through cooperation, safety, security, and respect.
