Birmans' Colors, Breeders and Patterns

French creation, the Sacred Cat of Burma used to come in only one color when he was presented to the French public in 1925 (the first famous Birman is Poupée de Madalpour, 1926) : the Seal-Point (black mask). Thirty years later, the Blue-Point (grey-blue mask) was introduced around 1956 (a dilute factor of the seal-Point) and for another twenty years, these two colors were the only ones to be found.

Among important first breeders let us quote in France: the first one: Miss Marcelle Adam (Madalpour (name also used by Miss Chaumont-Doisy). Before the war, Simone Poirier & Miss Gisèle Barney (Kaabaa), Mr. Marcel Baudouin-Crevoisier (1929-33) who produced the famous Dieu d'Arakhan were the main breeders. Miss Boyer is the most important because she was the only one to preserve the breed during the war years in France. She almost had to go back to zero after the war and did it through a crossing between a father and her daughter with the famous Orloff de Kaabaa (b. 1943) and Xenia de Kaabaa who are in most of today pedigrees. After Mrs Gisèle Poirier, important breeders are : her daughter, Miss Arlette Poirier (de Crespières) and Miss Gamichon (des Grandes Chapelles) who founded in 1961 the Cercle Sacré du chat sacré de Birmanie et du persan colourpoint. In 1955, Éloi-Eryx de Madalpour was the first Birman carrier of Blue. He is the father of the first blue lines (the blue gene seems was introduced with the help of a Blue Persan). For twenty years, Birmans were only found in Seal and Blue-point. The type was ameliorate and the head and eyes beame more round.

In the eighties, some breeders in Germany and England decided to work on the lynx pattern (or tabby : Tiger-face mask). Most of the actual lines of lynx-point are related with the famous Las-Perlas-sin Cepetto (still alive). The breeder , Miss Anneli Falk, used a persan Chinchilla from pure English line (Neiti) to reach this goal and after few years of selection came with typed Seal-lynx and Blue-lynx-point cats. According to Las-Perlas cattery, there cannot be any silver line coming from Cepetto as we can sometimes see in some pedigrees.

At about the same time, other breeders worked on the Chocolate and lilac (dilution of chocolate) pattern in England. They used a siamese to reach their goal.

In the 1980s, the red-point (or flame-point), cream-point and tortie-point were created in England and the Netherland. The cattery associated with this creation is Hilken. The source of this line was a female RED-DAWN in 1979. The first well typed Red-Point Tabby Birman was HILKEN RED ARRIVAL (1983-84).

Qud Gr.Ch. Casa de Amor's l'Orange (Red-Point male) & Mibest Tulip of Barmar (Blue-Cream Point female)

In the 1990s Genevieve Basquine introduced the real silver line (connected with the lynx pattern) using a Persan Silver-Shaded.

Some even talk about a caramel-tabby Birman connected with the silver line.

Moulin des Busset Leonidas (Silver-Seal-Tabby-Point male)

In the 1990s, beginning of the XIst century, some breeders worked on the Smoke, the Cinnamon and Fawn color.

The last color in progress now, in Germany, is the Golden-lynx-Point. The actual line has used a Persan Golden-Shaded-colorpoint (Jamina) and a Seal-Smoke-Point Birman. In 2004 they have reached the stage F3.

Premiere (F1 - 2002) & Perditha (F2 - 2003) (Seal-golden Shaded)

Rhapsody (F3 - 2004)

CFA only recognizes the traditional, most ancient, patterns (seal, blue, lynx (recently), red, cream, torties) while TICA is more liberal and adventurous and accepts the others.
