Envy You? by babaca

Duo and Quatre were in the kitchen of the safe house preparing dinner. Both boys could see out into the living room. Heero and Trowa were sitting on the couch talking about some complex layout of an OZ facility. Or so it seemed.

"Notice how they both sneak glances at each other when the other isn't paying attention," Quatre said in a low voice to Duo, "How kawaii."

"How annoying," Duo muttered seconds later. Quatre turned to stare at his friend and fellow pilot. "Duo!"

Duo stared back. "Oh come oooonnnnn, Quatre! You can't tell me this doesn't bother you a little. The object of your desire is flirting with the object of my desire."

Quatre blushed a shade of pink that matched his shirt. "Duo, you mustn't say these things. Heero and Trowa are our friends. And I'm h-happy for them."

Duo laughed, "Sure you are! That's why you stumbled over the word 'happy'."

"No, I didn't!"

"Did too!"

"Oh hush. Let's get the chicken in the oven," Quatre said irritably. He glanced over at the two quiet pilots. 'Are they sitting a little closer than they were a few seconds ago?' Quatre thought as he frowned.

Duo placed the chicken in the oven to roast, then headed to the refrigerator and grabbed a beer. "Q, you want a beer?"

Quatre stopped staring at the pair in the living room to stare at Duo. "What? You know I don't drink."

"You look like you could use one," Duo shrugged.

"I've never had a beer in my life."

"Here, have a sip of mine and tell me if you want one," Duo said as he handed the frosty can to the blonde.

Quatre took a sip and scrunched his nose up. "Yuck. No, thanks."

Duo smiled. "Wait, I know what you'd like--hold on." He returned to the refrigerator and pulled out the lone can of Coors Light that had been sitting in the back of the fridge untouched for months. "You need baby steps. This is a beginner beer. Try this."

Quatre stared at him, "No, don't go wasting beer on my account."

Duo laughed, "Trust me, this won't be a waste if you don't want it. I think someone in the house bought it by mistake. Just try it."

Quatre took a sip. It wasn't too bad. "Actually this tastes like ..."

"Water? That's the idea," Duo said as he pulled Quatre to sit on a stool next to him so they could observe Heero and Trowa whose hands seem to touch each other as they pointed to various parts of a map. "I just don't understand the appeal. I mean ... TROWA?"

"Oi! Mind your mouth, my friend! Trowa has lots of wonderful qualities," Quatre said defensively.

"Yeah, like being clueless when it comes to you," Duo said, instantly regretting the remark. He wasn't trying to hurt his friend.

"Oh like Heero is Mr. Aware!" Quatre jeered.

Duo stared at his friend in shock. "Quatre! You actual said something disparaging about someone! I'm ..."

Quatre flushed, "Gome-"

"Impressed! Remind me to give you beer more often," Duo laughed, glad that his friend chose to lob a retort back rather than get hurt by his earlier remark.

Quatre glanced over at Duo and laughed. He glanced back to the two quieter pilots still shyly flirting with each other in the other room. He sighed. "What is it with you and me and the silent types, ne?"

Duo snorted. "I hear you brother."

"Duo," Quatre asked, "Do you think they're ..." Quatre couldn't continue, he was blushing.

"At the rate they are flirting with each other? No way. They still haven't figured out that they really like each other yet."

Quatre sighed, "But they do make a cute couple though, even if they don't know it yet."

Duo placed an arm around Quatre. "Don't worry about it. I know who would make an even cuter couple."

Quatre turned to stare at Duo. "Who?"

Duo leaned in an placed a shy, gentle kiss on the lips of his startled friend. "Well us, of course."

"Duo!" Quatre said surprised, as he blushed again.

Duo smiled, "How can I resist someone who can turn the shade of their shirt?" He hugged Quatre. "But if you don't want to pursue this, I'll understand."

"What about Heero?" Quatre asked.

Duo looked over at the Japanese boy leaning rather close to Trowa. "He looks like a lost cause to me. What about Trowa?"

Quatre looked over to see Trowa smiling at something Heero was saying. "I guess he's also a lost cause."

"So why not have some fun? We get along just great. I'm not asking for eternal devotion, just someone to care for. You?" Duo asked with a serious, hesitant look.

Quatre knew Duo was completely serious. He thought about it. For all the loud glaring hints he threw at Trowa about his feelings, the tall green-eyed boy would carefully sidestep around those feelings. He figured Trowa just wasn't interested in romance, yet there he was completely taken with Heero. Duo has always been a good friend. He would be fun. Caring for him would be easy because he already cared for the long haired boy. He smiled at Duo and took his hand. "Why not indeed?"

Duo looked stunned. "Really?"

Quatre kissed the boy. The kiss was both shy and enthusiastic. "Yes, really!"

"Very cool!" Duo laughed. "Remind me to get you liquored up more often!"

Quatre laughed. "I'm not drunk! Anou, do you smell something burning?"

Duo looked around before diving for the pot on the burner, "Damn, the rice!"

As the two boys in the kitchen hurriedly went about saving dinner, Heero looked over at Trowa. "Do you think it ever occurred to them we could hear every single word they said?"

Trowa shrugged and smiled.
