Rosewood Table
larger image This corner table is made of rosewood, an endangered species of wood in unmanaged forests. The wood shown in this table is from a managed forest.

Trees..one visible essence of life on the surface of this earth. From soil to roots to full tree, follow some paths of a tree in the forest on this page. This is a "tip of the iceburg" in the path of a tree through life to the hands of man.

Living Wood, Dead but Breathing Wood: TREES

The American Chestnut Tree was in great numbers at one time. Harvesting timber fed many families...and took many trees away. Eventually, imported disease took this majestic tree from the mountains. A quiet retreat invited President Hoover to the Shenandoah Mountains where he fished for trout while planning the "great depression". In a good turn for nature, the value of RETREAT was seen and a protected park was formed.

Today, from the stumps and skeletons of old chestnuts new sprouts arise, only to be taken by blight in a few years. Yet, other trees grow strongly and all of nature has freedom to be protected from the excessive onslaughts of man and industry. Hawks fly freely, deer roam, bear hibernate in winter...birth, death, decay..all lead to new life. What is taken away may sometimes with wisdom be preserved in a balance with mankind.

This Tree Gives Back to Nature

Woodpecker Tree. This old tree is now home base for some northern Virgina woodpeckers. This is the cafeteria, the fast food resturant. Weakened decayed wood will be removed in other trees to make a nice nest with only a bird sized hole to the world. There, young woodpeckers will be hatched and fledged. The tree continues to give back to nature in the way nature intended.

From Forest Back to Man and Nature

This redwood stake is not for vampries...it is for Bats.... ! The use of a tree is now given to little creatures of the night. The carved and grooved post will be covered with White Cedar wood to form a bat house. When wood is harvested and used again in a way to support other living things in this Creation...is this use of the tree and creativity a proper way of giving back? Movement of wood from the living tree to helping new life is a cycle of nature. With the involvement of man, all is not bad. The bats won't think this is bad at all.
