All the birds of this neighborhood are leaving. Some days we feel left behind.
- American crow
- American goldfinch
- American kestrel -- swallows mob them, and they've been displaced by barn owls, but still got 'em; very striking
- American robin -- very bad caretakers
- Baltimore oriole
- barn owl -- noisy, messy things, but also haunting; I touched one before; we have the only ones in all of Boone County
- black-capped chickadee
- blue jay -- cannot be tamed
- brown-headed cowbird -- parasites; and they don't even perch on cows
- brown thrasher -- or was it a wood thrush ...
- Canada goose
- chipping sparrow
- common grackle -- grackles ...
- common nighthawk -- one of the most surreal moments in my life; only saw them once, dozens of them in different levels of the sky
- dark-eyed junco -- almost got one to eat from my hand; they're winter birds
- downy woodpecker -- did catch one of these, during a wind storm; held it in the porch for about ten minutes
- Eastern bluebird -- rarely see these anymore
- Eastern kingbird -- they hunt over the creek; they can hover, so I mistook it for a kingfisher
- Eastern meadowlark -- they were dancing about the airy fields one day
- European starling -- numerous, noisy things
- gray catbird -- shy
- great blue heron -- they live at the creek; very majestic, quiet birds; when you stumble upon one, you're rooted to the spot
- hairy woodpecker
- house finch
- house sparrow -- oh, I've caught many of these; they live in the cracks of the house; the males are vicious
- house wren -- in the brush at the creek
- indigo bunting -- catch bright, fleeting glimpses of these, in the summer
- killdeer -- funny, stilt-leg birds
- mallard duck
- mourning dove -- nice birds; skittish
- Northern bobwhite -- you hear them but never see them
- Northern cardinal -- Indiana's state bird
- Northern mockingbird -- perhaps my favorite bird; classy virtuosos, flying with distinct grace and switch-singing at night
- purple finch
- purple martin -- used to have these, but they've been displaced
- red-bellied woodpecker -- have one at home; very handsome
- red-headed woodpecker -- saw one on a telephone pole once
- red-tailed hawk -- our most numerous hawk; you can hear them
- red-winged blackbird -- harbingers of spring; ok-a-lee
- rock dove -- city pigeon
- rose-breasted grosbeak -- saw once, flying across the road
- ruby-throated hummingbird -- another favorite; captivating creatures
- tufted titmouse
- turkey vulture -- not very appealing
- yellow warbler -- bright, pretty yellow birds
