I got 50 sq feet of Second Skin (pretty new sound deadening company that compares very well to Dynamat). I recommend this product as it's so much cheaper compared to Dynamat, and it has the same results. I was very surprised with Second Skin, very easy to install, there was no stench what so ever, while Dynamat was a pain in my nose. Thanks a lot Ant (owner of Second Skin). However, if you think that 50 sq feet is enough for your whole car (trunk, doors, floors, and maybe roof) then you are wrong!. 50 square feet won't be enough, you would need more, i am telling you this because i thought the same thing, but guess what? i was wrong.
Just to remind you, i already had Dynamat on the trunk, so that's why you would see some Dynamat in the trunk. I add it a "second" layer with Second Skin. To start, you gotta clean up and stuff. Here are the tools your would need:
50 Square Feet of Second Skin; door removal tool from Autotoys.com (~$15); Scissors (some cheap one because you will ruin them); Straight edge razors (10 for $1 at Autotoys); Silicon (to reseal the doors, $6 with the gun at Home Depot)); some good cleaning product (Purple Power has been pretty effective, ~$5 at PepBoys); and a roller to smooth everything out. Everything will be self explanatory, i will just post the after pics. But scroll down and take a look for when i did the back doors.
Now for the back doors: As you can see, there is 1 screw inside that black holder, and there's 1 screw by the handle. Unscrew those, and to take out that part of the arm rest (see pic), you need to use the door removal tool (easier) and start opening it up. One thing though, there's like a hook in the front part of this (by the window opener), so you gotta push this back and then tilt it up. Hope you got what i said. And for the door handle, is mostly the same too. Once you get those the armrest part out (the door handle won't come out until later), use the removal tool around the cover until it comes loose. Then, using a small screwdriver, take out the lock part (there's a square part surrounding it). After that, the way to take out the plastic cover is by sliding it upwards. Be careful, once you get it semi-out, just slide the door handle thru the hole, so then you can disconnect it easily. This is how it would look after you take it out. PS - Make sure you clean the bare metals where you would be putting Second Skin, it's an important step. And after you lay everything out, use the roller to smooth everything out. Then with a razor, start prying the plastic cover out (Honda used silicon i believe or some other plastic) by cutting the silicon so the plastic cover would just come out. Left - With SecondSkin Right - Just bare, with plastic cover out. You can see i mostly put Second Skin on the inside of the car (i think it's better and there isn't much space to put it in the outer part). Here are some closer looks at the inside: So now we gotta put the plastic cover back. Make sure you clean the metal and the plastic. Left - Plastic with the new silicon applied. Right - Just put the plastic back and make sure you don't have any excess, so just smooth everything out with your fingers. Now just put everything back and done!! Well done my friend, it took a while, but it should be worth it (The things that we audiophiles do to get rid of the ghetto ass rattlings). I would leave the car bare like this overnight so that everything just cures. Finished 2/24/03
NOTE - I will be updating this page once i get to do my front doors and more of my car. |
