Conservancy Awarded Pond Restoration Grant
by Bruce Jones

The Alliance for the Great Lakes has awarded a $2500 grant to GINLC for the restoration of the retention pond on the west side of Meridian at Intrepid in the Commerce Park area. This pond is a critical part in the drainage for the east side of Meridian, south of the Grosse lie Parkway. Work was approved by the Commerce Park Commission and will occur this spring and summer.

Remediation goals include the assurance of free flowing water through the pond to Frenchman's Creek, the creation of a native ecosystem in and around the pond and a major improvement in the pond's aesthetic appearance. Conceptual plans involve removal of the invasive plant, Phragmites; the planting of flowering native wetland plants along the shoreline; and native flowering shrubs and several trees around the perimeter.

Plans also include the use of the pond for community education and for use as a local field experience for the school system.
