West Anchorage fire destroys 8 apartments ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Anchorage, Alaska, Dec. 3 - Eight families are homeless and a handful of pets are missing after a fire tore through a West Anchorage apartment building Wednesday afternoon.

Anchorage firefighters were called to an apartment at 2151 W. 80th Ave. just before 3 p.m. According to Anchorage firefighters, the buildings are all new and were built just last year, so they are structurally sound. Firefighters say the fire started on the deck of the building, and it looks like a smoldering cigarette is to blame. Neighbors who saw the fire say that when they realized everyone was safe and out of the burning building, they started to worry about their own apartments catching fire. "I was afraid it was going to jump from our building to the next, with the close proximity of the two," said Terrence Shanigan, who lives next door. "And I have animals and everybody here has pets, so that was my biggest concern." Firefighters say damage is estimated at around $350,000, and the building is a total loss. "What we all need to be aware of is that smoking materials can smolder for a long time," said Fire Department spokeswoman Cleo Hill. "So when you discard your cigarettes and your matches, and your lighters and things, make sure that you put them in a metal container, and that container is on a noncombustible surface." The Red Cross is helping the homeless families find places to stay.
