Torrens LDS ; Death Records.

Hello, Just before Xmas I had sent away for some Marraige and Death Certificates to Dublin for some Torrenses, I received them just a few weeks ago, any of you who have seen the actual Indexes which I had transcribed andare now on Lavonne Bradfields website will see some of these Indexes andtheOrder Numbers beside them. Any of you who wish to order some of these will need to use the Index Number , The Poor Law Union, (ie;- Coleraine or Ballymoney) persons name etc. It will be more of an advantage for anyone who lives near a Mormon / LDS Family research centre for which some of the actual Certificates can be found or send them to one which may have the available records. For me, Coleraine has only the Indexes . They have the Births Certificates which are from 1864 - 1870, the rest is all Indexes. Hi, I hope this message gets through to both the Torrens & Bann Valley Lists, Ive had a lot of sorting out to do on my computer so I hope there will be no complications this time.

Here are some more LDS Death Records.

Registrars District of Aghadowey, Poor Law Union of Coleraine. 26 June 1872, Carnrallagh, Aghadowey. John Torrens, Married, age 83 years, Labourer. Died of Bronchitis, One Month, Certified. Informant;- Ann Torrens, Present at the death, Carnrallagh. Registerred;- 2 July 1872, by Alex Law ??

NOTE;- I looked for this John in the 1821 Census when he should have been born about 1789/90 he would have been about 31 in the Census, I found a John T who was head of House No 48, Coolneman, he was a Weaver and Married to Margaret .

There is also a John Torrens who was a watchman at Ballydevit, who Married a Widow, Ann Dempsey , Ballygawley in 1851 at Coleraine Reg Office, Could bemore likely to be this John as Ballydevitt is as close as one can get to Carnrallagh. or perhaps the John T of Coolneman, may have moved around tofind work and perhaps he married twice after his first wife died !!!

Registrars District of Garvagh, Poor Law Union of Coleraine.
31 Dec 1884, Ballynameen, Desertoghill,
Nancy Torrance, Widow, age 86, Widow of Labourer,
Natural Decay, Time Certified,
Informant;- William McIlfatrick, Present at the death. Ballinameen.
Registerred;- 1 Jan 1885, by A McNeary.

NOTE;- This may have been the Nancy Paterson who was married in 1857 in Coleraine Reg. Office to a Widower, Alexander Torrence, of Garvagh , son of James Torrence.

Registrars District of Coleraine, Poor Law Union of Coleraine.
17 Dec 1873, Workhouse , Coleraine.
Alexander Torrens, Married, age 76 years, Labourer.
Cause;- Old Age, Certified.
Informant;- William Henry, Cheif Resident Officer, Coleraine Workhouse.
Registerred;- 19 Jan 1874, By Richard ? McIntire ?

NOTE;- Again I searched the 1821 Census for this Alexander Torrens and there was only two Alex Ts who would be about the right age, Alexander T of Moyletra, Farmer, But more than likely it was the Alex T of Movenis, who was a Labourer and Married to a Mary.

We also have to remember that Kernahan and others didnt get all the Torrenses who were in the 1821 Census, Like those Torrens families around Drumagarner etc.

Registrars District of Bushmills, Poor Law Union of Coleraine. in the County of Antrim.
7 Oct 1867, Craigaboney, Dunluce Parish.
Mary Torrens, Married, age 33 Years, Wife of a Labourer.
Cause of death;- Post Partium ? Haemorrhage, 12 Hours Certified.
Informant;- Ann Kane, present at the death, Craigaboney.
Registerred;- 22 Oct 1867, by J Macaw, Registrar.

NOTE;- This would probably have been Mary McClements who was married to a Alexander Torrens, who lived at Craigaboney, Bushmills, they had 3 children, William, (1862) , Nancy (1864) & Rose Ann T who was baptised in Dunluce Parish Church in 24 Nov 1867, Just over a month after her mothers death, I assume this Mary could have died during or after childbirth, as there wereno other Torrenses living around Craigaboney that I know of. Alexander Torrens must have remarried as his son James T, was Baptised in 1870 in Dunluce Parsih Church and his address was at Craigaboney and his new wife was Eliza McKeown/ McKeeman ??

That is all the Death records I have in the Meantime, I hope to send for more next week. I still have some Marraige records to post to the List which I hope to do next week also. Meantime I hope this has been helpfull.

Best Wishes,
Derek.

For me, Coleraine has only the Indexes . They have the Births Certificates which are from 1864 - 1870, the rest is all Indexes.

Anyhow, here is some of the actual Certificates which I recently received;-

Three months uncertified. No Med Att.
Informant: Jane Torrance, present at the death. Coolneman.
Registered; 23 June 1879.

NOTE;- This John Torrance could be a Brother to Hugh of Drumsara going by his age, he would have been born about 1797 and would be about 23 in 1821 Census, at Coolneman at House No 43 we have a John T , age 22, weaver, son of Hugh T .

I never seem to have much luck with the Johns in the Torrens family, but this helps to track one down. Above john would have been his Wife Lydia, who died a few months before him.

In 1st Garvagh Presbyterian Church, 17 Mar 1824, we have a John Torrance, Married Lydia Alexander, they were also living at Coolneman in the 1825 Visitation List.

No 277; 22 June 1871, Coolneman, Desertoghill.

Natural Decay Retention ?? of Urine. Certified.
Informant;- Margaret Torrens, daughter present at the death.Coolneman.
Registerred;- 31 Oct 1887. by A. McNeary.

NOTE;- This has to be the Wiliam Torrens who was son of Samuel and Mary Ann,and one of the seven brothers.

I looked through the 1821 Census to see which William T he was and the only one whos age that fits is William T in House No 38. Not unless we have another William who was a Blow-In !!!!

He must have got married in Moneydig Presbyterian when it was first built in 1836, and He would have been married during the gap when Moneydig didnt do any notes of Church records until the 1845 onwards. According to the Griffiths Valuations, He might be the same William who lived at Coolneman in a house beside Andrew T, (his brother) or the same house as Andrew T.

Išve also got my G,G,Grandparents Cerificates;-

No 266;- 3 Jan 1889, Coolneman, Desertoghill.
Samuel Torrens, Male, Married, age 63 years, Farmer,
Probably Paralyisis. No Maedical Attendant.

Eliza Torrens, Female, Widow, age 75 years,
Widow of Samuel Torrens, a Farmer.
Heart Disease, Uncertain Tropsy ?? & Debility ?? Certified.
Informant;- Henry Watson, The person who found the body.Coolneman.
Registerred;- 7 Aug 1890, By A. McNeary.

Eliza Torrens was Elizabeth Henderson of Coolneman, Widow, daughter of James
Gilmore of Possibly Carnrallagh ??, she Married Samuel Torrens of Culneman,
son of Andrew Torrens, (Above) in Moneydig 1851.
Henry Watson who found her body would have been the father to Elizas son in
Law James Watson who married her daughter Martha Torrens.

I have some more but I think this may be enough for now. Besides, I dont think Richard T likes long messages , And I certainly dont wish to offend !!

Best Wishes,
Derek.

Subject: Registry of Deeds

Hello Richard and others. I have just returned from Dublin after spending a few days with Linde Lunney and her family. While I was there I managed to visit the Registry of Deeds. I thought I would share with some of you not only on the Torrens List but on the Bann Valley list as well, as it may be usefull for all of you who have never visited there.

When I arrived there I discovered that it isnt exactly "User Friendly". First you have to enter the search Room which is full of Law students, and I had to wait for about 5-10 Minutes before anyone can attend me. Then once attended, I had to state what I was looking for, Which was Townlands like Culneman, The girl who attended me asked which Barony it was in, then she took note of it and returned about 10 minutes later, When she led me to another Room which is full of massive old Index Books of the Baronys. All from the years of 1708 - 29. 1730- 45. right up to 1920. In these books was also the Townlands, which I took note of rather than the Baronys. Once I had the Barony , I was led to another search Room which was full of the actual Books of Deeds.

I searched through these books and found a Deed of Carnroe. I just took notes of the names to save time. Year 1708 - 29, Book 17, Page 50, Ref No; 8140. Signed 5th May 1716. John McMullan of Dublin and the Rev Robert Gage. Townlands of Tamlaght, Coolhill, Carnroe etc in pofsion (possesion) of James McMullan, Alexander Terrance, Archibald Terrance, John Terrance, Hugh Terrance, Jonathan Jamieson, Donaghy Dempsey and Partner with Ferry over the Bann between Tamlaght and The Vow. With rights to Shoot , Hunt and fish on these Lands.

Agreement made by Alexander Terrance and Archibald Terrance, John Terrance and Hugh Terrance. Leave with the Rev William Walsh, Rector of Tamlaght O"Crilly.

NOTE;- This certainly has been usefull, as we have now found that we have a John Torrence old enough to sign this agreement in 1716. I wonder if these could all be either Sons or Grandsons of Hugh Torrens of the Hearth Money Rolls ???

Townland of Culneman and other townlands which I didnt take note of;- Year 1738- 1810. Book 430, Page 535. Ref No; 200155.

Jane Sterling/ Blair, Only child and Heir in law to John Blair, Late of Ballydevitt paid to Anne McPhall ?? otherwise Shaw of Ballycastle, Co Antrim, Widow of 2nd Part of Smith Ramadge (Ramage) of the City of Dublin, Archibald Shaw , Late of Straid , Co Antrim. William Hamilton of Madford ?, Dublin. Marcus McCausland of Ballerina.

NOTE;- Linde and I had a debate as to how the Torrens family seemed to have the name "Smith" as a Christian name. Perhaps it came in as the Smith Ramagejust mentioned who probably had once owned Culneman !!

Also Same Townlands as above;- I also looked up the Vow in that early period to see who was there;- Book 28, Page 339, No 17817. 6th Feb 1720, an Agreement made by a William Galland of Greenhill , Co Antrim and a Wybrants Olphert of Ballynefs ?? Donegal.

These are all people who are renting out their lands to the tennants , but it would take a long time to find out who the renters are which would give us a better picture as to where or ancestors lived .

advice to anyone who visits the Reg of Deeds in future is to make sure you purchase a Door card which costs about 6 Euro, as I left one room and returned I couldnt enter some of the rooms, and the staff never informed me if I wanted a Card at all, Plus I also found a Genealogical Room which I wasnt informed about, It was full of Old Index Books from A to Z of the Surnames of the Land holders. I searched through them for Torrenses and just coppied out the Index Book Numbers etc.

Subject: Registry of Deed/Torrrens

Here is a list of the Index I found in the Genealogical Room in the Registry of Deeds. I searched for Torrens, although I should have searched under the names of= those who were the actual owners of the Bann Valley Lands.= But I got a bit carried away when I discoverred the amount of Torrens names=I found of various spellings.

Book No 15, Page 372, Ref No 7805.
1708 - 1729. Alexander Terrance, of Dublin, and some man Holland.

Bk 172, P 99, Ref 115227.
1730 - 45. William Torrence, Merchant , Dublin, Involving Upton.

Bk 195, P9, Ref 128705.
1758. William Terrance, and Margaret Terrance, Dublin,

Bk 248, P 198, Ref 159737. 1766. John Torrence, of Ballymecran, involving Paul Torrence, (I think it said he was John Ts son) also mentions Johns wife Ann, son James and Executor was Catherine Torrence, a Thomas Moore was also mentioned.

Bk 270, P71, Ref 169758.
1768-76. Hugh Torrens and Jennett Torrens, also mentioned was a John Torrens all of Ballynorag, and it also mentioned George Cresswell.
Bk 357 Page 58, Ref 238630.
Bk 353, P 392, Ref 239624.
Bk 337, P 547, Ref 228226.
Bk 345, P 379, Ref 233842.
All these was involving Andrew Torrens of Dublin. I forgot to take note of what year this was, Probably sometime between 1776 and 1790.

Bk428 P259, Ref 280122.
437, P 552/7 ?? Ref 281540/110 ?? (Writing was hard to make out). 1791. Mary Torrens, Widow, of Belfast, involving a James McMaster, Merchant, which was involving changing property in Belfast, I think this is the same Torrens I found in the Belfast Newsletter a few years ago where it concerned Torrenses owning a shop of store of somesort.

Bk 471, Page 164, Ref; 298501.
1793. Robert Torrens and a McNaughten, in Co Antrim. I was pretty sure that this was some of our Ballymoney Torrens, as the name McNaughten was a Landlord and owned a huge amount of Townlands throughout North Antrim but I was dissapointed as it only concerned a Robert Torrens, Shoemaker an Elizabeth Torrens (his Wife) alias Sterling of Ballymena and a McNaughten a Butcher of Ballymena.
Bk 528, Page 784, Year 1800.
536, P 275. 1801
548, P 473, 1803.
560, P 519. 1804.
575, P 198.
587, P 29.
584, P 263.
601, P 47.
602,
614,
608,
536,
All the above concerned a John Torrance of Limerick, a Merchant. I looked up only about 3 of the actual books but due to time limit I thought that these were all of the same man so I didnt look up all of these.

Bk 553, Page 95.
1803. Andrew Torrens of Dublin.
573, P 250.
580, P 60.
582, P 276.
580, P 546.
593, P 220.
- All the above concerned Andrew Torrens of Dublin.

Bk 614, P 73.
1809. Involves John Torrens of Glenone, Co Londonderry.

Bk 583, P 350.
Bk 544, Page 1.

Bk 657 ? , P5, Ref; 449829.
1810 - 1812. John Torrens.

Bk 716, P74, Ref; 429bog.
Bk 721, P43, Ref; 44929bg.
1816. All the above concerned a John Torrens.

Bk 756, P 597, Ref; 514132.
1819. Rev John Torrens.

Bk 16, P 187.
1842. Jane Torrens of Castledawson, Co Derry.

Bk 5, P 261,
1843, James Torrens of Co Antrim.

Bk 13, P 104.
Bk 18, P 19,
1846, All involved a James Torrens of Co Antrim.

Bk 23, P 231.
Thomas Torrance of Culneman and Hugh R. Morrison, ( I just got time to have a quick glance at this one but ran out of time).

Bk 19, P 240.
Alexander Torrens and James Cramsie. (Possibly a Ballymoney/ Vow
as Cramsies where well known Landlords in those areas).

Bk 20, P 257.
James Torrens , Samuel Torrens and Alexander McFettridge, (Has to be another Aghadowey perhaps James T of Mayoghill ?? ).

Bk 42, P 283.
1878. Robert J Torrens and Joseph Richardson.

Bk 42, P 98.
1872. Stewart Torrens and Hugh Caldwell. (Must be a Kilrea Torrens as I think there was a Stewart T in that area ?? ).

Bk 35. P 215.
1876. Thomas Torrens and Patrick McCann, of Co Derry.

Bk 1, P 114.
William Torrens and William Graham of Co Derry.

I am sorry but that is all that I coppied out of the Index Books, I may have skipped a few years due to time limit. I think I may have skipped from the early 1800s to the 1840s then from there to the 1870s when it was then that I started to find some Torrens people that was more interesting to my own area. But I do hope these indexes will perhaps give some of us studying Torrens famillies either within or outside of the Bann Valley some idea where to look and if anyone decides to visit the Registry of Deeds to take a look for themselves, make sure to take this list with you to save time !!

Best Wishes,
Derek.

Subjct; LDS Torrens Marriages

Hello, Here are some Torrens Marraiges from the LDS Indexes which I recently received.

MARRAIGE solemnized at Churchtown , in the Parish of Tamlaght O"Crilly, Co Londonderry.
11th ? March 1853, James Anderson, age 30, farmer, of Magheramore son of
Anderson, Labourer.
Martha Torrens, age 22, spinster, Coolneman, daughter of Andrew Torrens, farmer.
Witnesses;- Samuel Torrens, & John Boyd.
Married by the Rev Robert Torrens.

NOTE;- Is there anyone on the Bann Valley List know anything about these Anderson or any Anderson family ?? I would like to know as this Martha Torrens is a sister to my G, G,Grandfather, He was the Samuel who was the witness at the wedding.

I always knew that Andrew T had a daughter Martha who was in the 1821 Census and the 1825 visitation List. But she must have died as this Martha would have been born about 1831 if she was 22 in 1853 when she got married. Andrew seemed to have a habit of calling his children the same names and must of had a lot of infant deaths if we look at the Baptisms of 1st Garvagh he has about 4 Agnes and 3 Margarets !!

MARRAIGE Solemnized in Registrars Office, Coleraine, in the District of Coleraine.
13 Mar 1852, Thomas McKendry, Full age, Tailor, of Bushmills, Parish of
Co Antrim, son of Alexander McKendry, Labourer.
To Mary Torrence, fullage, Tailor, of Bushmills, Parish of Billy, daughter
of Alexander Torrence, Labourer.
Witnesses;- James Kane, & William Cain.

NOTE;- This Mary T, could be a sister of the Alexander T, whos wife Mary whos death I mentioned in my Last email, remember there was a Annie Kane present at the time of death. There could be some connection as there isnt many Torrenses around Bushmills in those days that I know of. It seems funny that one of my own sisters Married a McKendry and another Married a Kane both men from the Parish of Billy, near Bushmills. Seems rather Ironic !!, Who knows, they may have married their own relations !!

MARRAIGE Solemnized at the Registrars Office in the Town of Ballymoney.
16 Aug 1852, William King, 36 yrs, Widower, Labourer, of Dervock, Parish of
Derrykeighan, son of William King, Labourer.
To Rose Anne Torrans, full age, Servant, of Dervock, Parish of Derrykeighan,
daughter of Alexander Torrans, Labourer.
Witnesses;- James Given, & Anne Jane Moon.

NOTE;- I wonder of this Rose Ann T is a sister of the Mary mentioned above ?? Dervock isnt far from Bushmills and if this is the same Alexander T as above and because of his occupation being a Labourer would mean he could move around depending on where work was available at the time. I know that the Alexander T of Craigaboney, Bushmills whos wife Mary had died had a daughter called Rose Ann born in 1867. She may have been called for after her fathers sister perhaps !!

There are still people of the surname "King" in Dervock today It is also interesting that a Witness at the wedding being a Anne Jane Moon, The surname Moon isnt that comon in North Antrim but is definatley an Aghadowey Surname .

MARRAIGE Solemnized at The Registrars Office, Town of Ballymoney.
2 Dec 1856, James Armour, 50 yrs, Widower, Weaver, of Craigs, Parish of
Finvoy, son of James Armour, Farmer.
To Nancy Torrance, 30 yrs, of Craigs, Parish of Finvoy, daughter of James Torrans, Labourer.
Witnesses;- James D Cuffey ?? & John Kirkpatrick.

Best Wishes,
Derek.

Subject: LDS Torrens Marriages

To Derek:
Thank you for those certificate notes. The one of interest to me is the one I have saved on this reply. My great-great-grandfather was a John KIRKPATRICK. His son, William, was from Drumlee, Parish of Finvoy, and was a widower when he married Jane PATTERSON in 1872. It is possible that the witness on the following certificate was his father, John.

I have a KIRKPATRICK/TORRENS wedding certificate and wonder if these people are my great-great-grandparents:

March 22, 1847 At 1st Ballymoney Pres. Church, Parish of Ballymoney, Co. Antrim
Groom: John KIRKPATRICK of full age bachelor Craigatempin, Parish of Ballymoney
Groom's father: William KIRKPATRICK farmer
to
Isabella TORRANS of full age spinster Craigatempin, Parish of Ballymoney
Bride's father: Samuel TORRENS farmer
Witnesses: Samuel TORRENS and Samuel LAMONT
John KIRKPATRICK signed his name.
Isabella TORRANS made an X

Note the discrepancy between the spelling of the bride's surname, with an A, and the witness's signature, with an E. I think this would be the minister's error since the bride could not write.

Derek, I'm wondering if the John KIRKPATRICK who witnessed the marriage of James ARMOUR and Nancy TORRANCE was the brother-in-law of the bride, if it was the same KIRKPATRICK who married Isabella TORRANS. Or, it could be a son of John KIRKPATRICK'S witnessing his cousin's marriage.

Is Craigatempin south of the town of Ballymoney?

There is also a John Torrens who was a watchman at Ballydevit, who Married a Widow, Ann Dempsey , Ballygawley in 1851 at Coleraine Reg Office, Could be] more likely to be this John as Ballydevitt is as close as one can get to Carnrallagh. or perhaps the John T of Coolneman, may have moved around to find work and perhaps he married twice after his first wife died !!!

NOTE;- This would probably have been Mary McClements who was married to a Alexander Torrens, who lived at Craigaboney, Bushmills, they had 3 children, William, (1862) , Nancy (1864) & Rose Ann T who was baptised in Dunluce Parish Church in 24 Nov 1867, Just over a month after her mothers death, I assume this Mary could have died during or after childbirth, as there were no other Torrenses living around Craigaboney that I know of.

Best Wishes, Derek.

Date: Tuesday, March 22, 2005 4:07 PM Subject: LDS Torrens Marraiges;

Hello, Here are some Torrens Marraiges from the LDS Indexes which I recently received.

MARRAIGE solemnized at Churchtown , in the Parish of Tamlaght O"Crilly, Co Londonderry.

11th ? March 1853, James Anderson, age 30, farmer, of Magheramore son of James Anderson, Labourer. To Martha Torrens, age 22, spinster, Coolneman, daughter of Andrew Torrens, farmer.

13 Mar 1852, Thomas McKendry, Full age, Tailor, of Bushmills, Parish of
Billy, Co Antrim, son of Alexander McKendry, Labourer.
To Mary Torrence, fullage, Tailor, of Bushmills, Parish of Billy, daughter
of Alexander Torrence, Labourer.
Witnesses;- James Kane, & William Cain.
