An Ode To Pam
Pam is my mentor, role model and friend. An amazing nurse with unbelievable compassion, empathy and just the right dose of "don't fuck with me." She never thought of or treated me like I was "just" a nursing assistant. She believed in me from the time we met and she still does to this day. She inspires me to be the best nurse I can be.
I will never forget being half way through nursing school and feeling ready to give up. I was doubting my ability, my smarts and being a nurse all together. Sensing something was wrong, Pam grabbed me and pulled me into her patient's room. "Help me with this dressing change," she said, "Now tell me what's wrong." I told her how I was feeling and she listened carefully and then proceeded to give me the pep-talk of the century. Over her patient's gaping belly wound, she basically gushed about what a great nurse she thought I would make and how she believed with every bone in her body that nursing was my calling. It wasn't long before we both were misty-eyed and she said, "Now shut up, you are gonna make me cry!"
Pam loves the snow, her kids and vacations. She loves being a nurse, a good friend and teacher. She loves God, life and laughter...and for all that, I love her!
