THE MATRIX movie is a sci-fi tale about an elaborate illusion constructed to fool humanity; a "prison for the mind". This is also an ideal metaphor for the current state of intellectual matters int he U.S. and the world. How else can you explain that a terrorist like Arafat can be awarded a nobel "peace" prize, or that blackouts caused by government regulations are blamed on "de-regulation"? The intellectuals think they have reality -- and America -- hoodwinked. But their time is done.
The "matrix" is a complicated lie. Currently, the same could be said of philosophy.
By understanding the ideas that move current events, one can be armed againt them -- armed with the mind. Thus eventually one can turn the tide, and restore reason and freedom to their proper place central to proper philosophy.
