FRIGHT TIME

Stir of Echos (1999)

It's a terrible shame that this came out at about the same time as The Sixth Sense, because despite all the praise, hype, and Oscar nominations surrounding the Haley Joel Osment flick, this is honestly the better horror film. Not the better film, necessarily, because they're both about equal in the big picture, but this is much more frightening, disturbing, and well-written. Kevin Bacon is hypnotized at a party by his wife's New Age sister. This opens a door in his mind, and he starts having strange visions, most of them involving a pale girl. His son is also open to these visions, and father and son set out to find out what's wrong. Yes, Kevin Bacon 'sees dead people,' and yes, he tries to help them out, but this is based on a Richard Matheson book written well before M. Night Shyamalan ever came out with his aforementioned ghost flick. What's different here is the focus on Kevin Bacon and his growing confusion to what's really happening. The intelligent script is one of the best I've seen. A must-own.
