FRIGHT TIME

Interview with a Vampire (1994)

A beautifully photographed film based on the novel by Anne Rice. Louis (Brad Pitt) concedes to an interview by an eager reporter (Christian Slater). He tells of his changing by Lestat (a surprisingly evil Tom Cruise) in late 18th century New Orleans, and his pain and suffering since then. The movie is fine to look at, and many of the performances are excellent, particularly Cruise's. However, Pitt, who is supposed to be portraying a tortured soul, merely invokes the spirit of mahoghany. This is one of the stiffest performances I've ever seen. The literate script, by Rice herself, is just dripping with confusing dialouge. Luckily, the gay subtext from the book survives, much stronger than one would expect from a studio film. Neil Jordan's direction is intense and possibly the most positive thing about the entire production. A good rental.
