FRIGHT TIME

The Exorcist (1973)

One of the most popular horror films ever, The Exorcist is also one of the best. William Friedkin broke new ground in the horror film, placing new importance on special effects, and increased emphasis on realism. Of course, the movie wouldn't be possible without the incredibly believable performance of Linda Blair. I have yet to meet a person possessed by the devil, but when I do, I doubt it will seem half as authentic as the possession of Regan McNeil. Jason Miller and Max von Sydow, as the priests who battle the demon, are also fine. The movie has lost some of its power over time, but it's still shocking and relevant. The 25th anniversary edition is digitally remastered, and contains two theatrical trailers (the box says three, but who's counting?) and a BBC documentary about the making of the film. Get this edition if at all possible, because this really is a must-own.

The 1973 hit is re-released in an original director's cut with current interviews of cast, crew, and staff discussing the making of The Exorcist and related experiences plus several out-takes, some of which will be included in the upcoming theatrical re-release. One of the eeriest shots is Linda Blair doing a spider walk down a flight of stairs, which is great. A good rental for most and a highly recommended purchase for the most rabid fans like myself.

Famous Quote from the Movie:

Father Merrin (Von Sydow): The demon is a liar. He will lie to confuse us. But he will also mix lies with the truth to attack us.
