Blair Witch Project (1998)
If any horror film deserves to be called an 'instant classic,' it must be this film. The term 'Neo-Lewton' comes to mind. There is very little blood, no graphic violence, and you never see the monster (I hesitate to even call it such). All of the terror is suggested. This is the way horror films should be made these days. Maybe the success of 'Blair Witch' will be a boon for the horror movie industry. Here's to hoping.
The plot (so to speak) is fairly well-known, but I'm not going to ruin it for those who don't have the info. This is really a movie where the less you know, the better. However, I can tell you this:
In October of 1994, three student film-makers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary.
A year later, their footage was found.
Or something like that. I'm not going to say that the acting was superb or the direction exquisite, because that doesn't really apply. The dialouge was improvised on the fly, with only the barest outline of a script. It all works, though, especially the closing five minutes. An excellent rental.
