Chapter 7
At first, Ty and Carly didn’t really talk. He just gave her road directions. And Carly tried to be extra careful, and not speed or break any other traffic rules.
“Well, you drive better than I thought you would.” He finally said.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” she frowned.
He laughed. “I don’t know, I thought you would be speeding all over or something.” He turned in his seat so he was facing her.
She sharply swerved the car into the other lane. “There, happy?” she laughed.
“Yeah, actually that’s more of what I expected.”
“Just don’t let me get in a street car after a race. That’s when I get bad. It takes me hours to shake off the aggressive driving.” She said. “You know, Ty, I’ve never gotten a ticket. Not even a parking ticket.”
“I know. We checked.”
“What???” she looked startled.
“You don’t think we’re gonna let you drive a $200,000 car with out checking, do you?”
“Makes sense, I guess!” she answered.
“So what’s with you and Junior?” he asked.
“Oh… THAT’S what this is all about.” She said grimly.
“No! I’m just curious, just like everyone else at DEI!”
She stopped at a red light. She looked at Ty. “What do you think is going on?” she grinned.
He laughed. “I can only guess, but he’s certainly a happy camper! But whatever is going on, I hope you guys are careful. And Carly- you better not just be messing with his head.”
She pulled into the driveway of the dealership, and parked a couple of spaces over from Dale. There was a spot set up for the show car. Ty looked apprehensive at what her reaction to his last comment would be.
“Ty…” she paused. He tensed up waiting for an outburst. She wanted to kill him, but she realized he said it out of his concern for Dale. She let out a breath. She looked at him. “No. I’m not messing with his head. Actually, I don’t even know what to tell you except that we have talked about this a lot. All I know, is that I’m happy, and he’s happy.”
Ty relaxed. “You, uh, sleeping with him?” he asked.
“THAT is none of your business.” She said sharply. “I’ll answer you once. Just this once. No, Ty. I’m not. But that doesn’t mean I wont. And don’t ever ask again.” She wagged a finger in his face.
“I’m sorry!” he winced. “You’re right, it’s not my business.”
“So, did you ask Junior this?” she said.
“No!” he responded.
“Why Not?” she was shocked. “Its ok to ask me, but not him? Or not us together? What’s up with that???”
“I don’t know!!! It never came up! Geez, Calm down, will ya?”
“Don’t piss me off, Ty!” she warned.
“I KNOW!! I’m not trying to piss you off! I’m trying to be your friend, here. What do I have to do??” he moaned.
“For starters, don’t ask me who I’m sleeping with. HUGE no-no, Ty. Ok. I’ll try to calm down.” She said.
“Ok. Sorry. My bad! So - how did your meeting go with Teresa and Scotty and Tony Sr.?”
“Just fine. I’m sure you already heard that though!” she snapped.
“Yeah, I heard from them. I just want to make sure you’re ok though. You ok, Carly?”
She saw that he was sincere as he looked at her. “Just what do you mean by that?” she queried.
“I truly want to know if you’re ok. I’m your boss. And like I said, I hope I’m your friend. I want you to be happy. Oh God, Carly. Trust me, ok?” He shut his eyes. “I’m not letting you out of the car until I know you’re ok.”
“Ok with what?” she asked.
“DO YOU EVER JUST ANSWER A QUESTION?” he laughed.
“Well,” she laughed. “look at the big picture! Am I ok with Dale? Yes. Am I ok with you? I think so. Am I ok with the ARCA situation? Not really, but I’ll deal with it. Am I ok with what happened this morning? Yes and No. Would you like me to type this up in outline form? Or paragraphs?”
He reached over and hugged her. “Why the hell did we hire a female driver?” he laughed. She laughed too. “Now get out of the car!”
