Jessie Bannon pushed her long, fire red hair out of her eyes for the millionth time in an hour. She was hot, sweaty, grimy and tired. She’d just finished packing her last suitcase. She figured she’d better get something to eat and a little rest, because tomorrow, she had to leave for Cornell.

Walking downstairs towards the refrigerator, she felt a smile spread across her face. She’d dreamed of going to Cornell University all her life. Ever since she was a little girl, she’d wanted to do something great, something people would remember her for. When she was eight, she’d decided to be a rocket scientist and had never changed her mind. When she was eleven she’d heard an older cousin of hers discussing Ivy League schools. Her cousin had been going to Cornell too. Ever since then, she’d wanted to go to Cornell, too. And she’d never changed her mind about it.

So, when six weeks ago, she’d learned that she’d gotten in, she’d been ecstatic.

In the first few moments she’d literally forgotten to breathe.

When the realization that she was going to Cornell sank in, a new thought had struck her mind. She was going to be separated from the one person she loved most.

            Jonny.

The smile on her face turned upside down.

Jonny had gotten into Stanford, and he was really happy about it. His mother was from Stanford. He was so excited he couldn’t stop grinning either. It was a dream come true.

Both of their most cherished dreams were becoming a lucid reality, but so was their most dreaded nightmare.

They were going to be torn apart. Cornell was so far away from Stanford; it would not be easy for them to visit each other on a regular basis.

Jessie felt tears come to her eyes, and she had to sit down to keep from falling.

She would miss him so much. She really had no idea how she’d manage without him. She remembered the first time she’d realized the depths of her ardor for him.

They’d been in Prague, investigating haunted sonatas. Jonny had been flirting with that Irena chick, but he dropped her after their first date because he found her completely infuriating. In his own words she “made such a stink over a broken fingernail, you’d think the world had been destroyed!”

That night alone in their hotel room, Jessie had been standing on the little balcony taking in the beautiful city of Prague. Then Jonny had come up behind her. She’d turned to him, and she saw more beauty in his sapphire eyes than any other thing in the world could possess. That night, he’d whispered in her ear that her eyes were like the most mysterious opaque gems---you never knew what to expect, dark sky blue, or lovely emerald green. He’d said that he thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world, that “Elise Lenoir and the Zin twins didn’t hold a black candle” to her. And in a moment of weakness, he’d kissed her.

She had wanted to resist it, but her body would not allow it. It was the most amazing sensation she’d ever felt, the feeling of his soft, moist lips upon hers.

He’d made her so weak, so susceptible that night, planting kiss over kiss on her mouth, her cheeks, her neck. She’d run her fingers through his golden hair, and returned his kiss with a passion rivaling his own.

The memory gave her goose bumps.

Jessie changed her mind about getting something to eat, and headed back upstairs toward Jonny’s room. He was busy packing too.

The door was closed. Jessie knocked. She thought she heard a grunt. Was it a yes? Supposing so, she opened the door a crack and poked her head in.

            “What’s up Hotshot?”

He turned around, and if it was possible, Jessie felt even deeper in love. He had the face of an angel, the smile of a saint. His lovely flaxen hair gleamed in the sunlight. His entire face lit up at the sight of her.

“Hey, Ace! Nothing much. What’s up with you?”

            She suddenly had an idea.

“I haven’t exactly had lunch, Jonny, what about you?”

“Not really---with all this packing going on, I guess I forgot.”

“So… do you want to go out somewhere for dinner?”

“Hey that’s a great idea, since this might be the last dinner we have together in a long time.” He said it flippantly, with a smile, but his eyes revealed his sadness.

She ignored his remark—and the annoying lump in her throat.

“Should we go for pizza or McDonalds?”

“Um, Jess, actually I was thinking…how about the Starlight Room?”

“The Starlight Room?” she echoed disbelievingly. The Stralight Room was the most romantic—and expensive—restaurant in town.

“Yeah, we’ll take Dad’s Beemer and go.”

Jessie smiled in spite of the tears that threatened to flood her eyes. Going to the Starlight Room in a black BMW convertible with the boy of her dreams.

“Sounds cool. Let’s leave at seven.”

            “Slammin’!”

As Jessie left the room, closing the door behind her, Jonny finally burst into tears. He was a strong young man, he didn’t cry a lot. But he just couldn’t help himself. He loved Jessie so much that just at the thought of being away from her his very soul ached.

“Get a grip, Quest,” he muttered to himself. It was 6:15, he had to shower and change.

He had to make this a night to remember.

Jessie slipped the small garnet earrings through her ears and gave herself a once over in the mirror. She looked okay.

It was about seven and Jonny had already called her down more than once, so she grabbed her purse and hurried down the stairs.

She hoped he’d be pleased; she wanted to make this a special night for both of them.

Jonny looked at the mirror in the hall. He figured he looked all right.  He checked his watch. 6:59 p.m. Just then, he heard footsteps. He looked up. At the first step was a fairy, slowly floating down towards him. No one but a fairy could be so pretty.

She was dressed in a white silk dress that clung to her curvaceous frame like a second skin. The dress ended a few inches above her knees emphasizing her long shapely legs. Her long red hair flowed simply over her shoulder, contrasting severely with her pale white skin. Her eyes were a reticent shade of aquamarine. She looked so amazingly beautiful that he wanted to pull her upon him and kiss her. That was all he really wanted to do.

Trying to catch his breath, he whispered,

            “Let’s go.”

Jessie nervously descended the stairs, hoping she didn’t look like a loser. But one look into Jonny’s eyes, and all her fears melted away. In his eyes, she didn’t see the reflection of a loser. She saw the most beautiful girl in the world.

            He didn’t look bad either.

Dressed in tan trousers, a mustard T-shirt, and a navy blue sports coat, he could have been a model in a fashion magazine.

As she came down, he softly whispered,

         “Let’s go.”

Tonight was going to be definitely special.
