Alamogordo--Dry Canyon
Directions: MAPQUEST, the distance from Dallas to Alamogordo (through Hobbs) is 585 miles. Where else is 600 miles local but Texas?? Primary Route: Dallas to Hobbs NM. From Hobbs, take HY 82 through Artesia, NM and follow HY 82 through Mayhill, Cloudcroft to Alamogordo. Alternate Route: Take I-20 to I-10 towards El Paso. Take HY 54 North East to Alamogordo. Site Information: Launch is at 7,000 MSL/2400 AGL. The site required ratings are HG 2 (Novice) and/or PG 3 (Advance). The higher PG rating is due to the long distance to the LZ from Launch. The glide slope from Launch to LZ is 7:1. The Dry Canyon launch site requires a 4WD vehicle as the road is rough and needs work. Riders fee up the hill is $5 and is strictly enforced. Contact Robin Hastings (505-541-5744) Camping: KOA Camp Ground: (505-437-3003) 412 24th Street. This commercial camp ground is located in Alamogordo about ¾ mile from the LZ. It has a pool, showers, laundry, game room, rest rooms etc. They have 60 RV sites ($21/night), 10 tent sites ($17.50 per night), and 2 cabins $29/night). The cabin has a bunk bed and a double bed. Bring your own bedding. Reservations are suggested. Day shower use allowed, but fee of $5 is enforced. Breezy Point Camp Ground: This is a small camp ground with about ten tent sites. It is located about 4 miles on road to Cloudcroft. The KOA owner indicated that it has about ten tent sites and a small rest room/shower, with not much else. Primitive Camping: Primitive camping is available along the road to launch. There is no water or anything else for that matter. However, its free. Motels: Numerous in town:
