The Sabbats

Samhain: This holiday is celebrated from December 31st to November 11th. It is considered to be the Wiccan New Year. The veil between the world of the living and that of the dead is said to be thin during this sabbat, and rituals usually involve celebrating the lives of friends and family members who have passed on. Occasionally even speaking to them. Because of the wiccan belief in re-incarnation it is also a representation of continued life. It is the final harvest celebration and is also considered one of the more important sabbats.

Mabon: This is also called the Fall Equinox. It is celebrated September 21st or 22nd. Mabon is named after the welsch god who symbolized male fertilization. Part of this sabbat is honoring the female dead in your family. It is the second harvest sabbat but is considered to be one of the lesser sabbats.

Lammas: It is celebrated on August 1st, and is a sabbat used to honor lugh, a representation of the Celtic Sun god. This is the first harvest sabbat, and is the Wiccan Thanksgiving.

Mid Summer: It is also called Summer Solstice, and is celebrated on June 21st and 22nd. This is the holiday the god reaches his peak. This is another of the bale fire holidays. In drudic tradition, all sacred plants reach there peak.

Beltane: Celebrated April 30 or May 1. It's the celebration of rebirth, and the bale fire brings blessings into the home. Ribbons of white and red are secured firmly to the top of a pole and are weaved around the pole by a group of people. In some traditions menstruating women would parade around on brooms to encourage fertility in the land. Romance and love are a big part of this sabbat.

Ostara: Also called Lady Day this sabbat is a representation of the return of fertility to the land. Some witches in certain traditions write down all of their negative acts and try to turn things around and make them right. This holiday is a lot like Easter and sometimes involves the coloring of eggs.

Imbolg: This sabbat is celebrated on February 2nd. Also called Candelmas. It's a fire festival celebrating the goddess of fertility and the god. This celebration is for change.

Yule: This is one of the lesser sabbats celebrated December 21st. It marks the rebirth of the Sun God. Yule logs are burned on this holiday, and mistletoe is hung over doorways and altars. Gifts are exchanged, and the great horned god who is ruler of the dark half of the year is honored. This holiday is much like Christmas, but is a much older holiday.
