These are ther largest of the Filipino style canoes. Typically they range from
about 35 feet to over 60 feet long and are multipurpose boats. The difference
between the Pagpakan and Bangka is the Pagpakan have many bamboo poles
radiating outward from the boat to hold the fishing nets. I cant give you
any details on why this aproach. Maybe they lower the nets directly from
the boat and fish the waters right below them. I know the fishing Bangkas
deploy their nets over the flat stern and lay it out in a circle then close
the net and pull it in to get their catch as many western style fishing boats do.
The large Bangka pictured below right shows the typical canoe configuration
and though this boat is about 60 feet long it's very narrow as you
can see. |

Some of these large canoes are absolutely beautiful. They usually have
a gasoline or deisel engine that came from a small car and the cooling water
runs in a through the hull pipe that runs up and down the boat and is in contact
with the sea water outside. I haven't seen an instalation so I don't know
if there is any transmission or if the Bangkas are direct drive. I have
been told the average price for a nice big boat is around 100,000 to 250.000
pesos. Thats 2 to 5 thousand dollars US. I have always wanted to live
on a boat but I think I'll settle for my pumpboat for right now. Who knows?
Maybe after a few years I'll be ready for something a bit bigger.
For now at least, I want comfort, Internet, and solid footing. |
