This book is designed to educate everyone in a tech position. And teach them how to survive such a position. This is much harder than merely surviving missionary. Everyone who has ever held a tech position knows that you are expected to know everything about everything and be all things to all people. Reality rarely touches the lives of users and supervisors. Time has no meaning. It usually feels like a tech must always be able to do three separate things at the same time just to keep up! Everyone else is working to keep a tech from getting ahead. It needs to stop.
This is for programmers, support, helldesk operators, and anyone else who works with technology and deals with users. If you are in a tech position that requires you to (supposedly) know more than the people you deal with, this page is for you and your continued education. There are people who understand your situation. There are people willing to help. Don't give up hope! And don't go killing your users. More will be hired if you do. You need to learn how to tame the user. Make them understand that they don't know what they are talking about. Train them not to ask question which may seem reasonable to them, but are really nothing more than a foul smelling, steaming waste of time.
Using this book, you will find yourself better able to defend yourself from the user and the manager. After all, managers do require a special touch. They are generally the people in a position to terminate your employment. Unless you have some compromising photos of your boss on file, you will need to pay special attention to this section. Managers rarely realize that there are only 24 hours in a day, and you have to sleep during a few of those hours. You need to convince them that you do not have magical powers over the space-time continuum, without making them reach for the pink slip. We will show you how to make sure they know you have to much work to fire you, without forcing you to do so much work that you don't have time to relax, occasionally. This is important.
