The 10 Commandments for a Tech
- Users are never right. Do not treat them with the respect that says they might be.
Not only are they always wrong, but they rarely know what they want, and wouldn't recognize it if were to be tied to a hammer and beat against their collective foreheads. They will make a guess at what they want. It is your job to interpret that into the real world and give them a working solution. Don't forget, user is spelled with a leading "L", as in (l)user.
- Deadlines are never, ever final. Do not allow yourself stress regarding these evil fictions.
Deadlines are given as a goal to try for, not an absolute timeframe. Consider this: Clients give a date they would like a product by. Salesdrones give managers a schedule slightly before when the client would like to make themselves look good for the client. Managers give the programmers a deadline of tomorrow because they have no grasp of the flow of time in this reality. Programmers get the job done when it gets done. This example carries over to every aspect of the tech industry, whether you are a programmer for a major software company or IT at a small company trying to upgrade a user's computer.
- If your title includes the word "Administrator", you are powerful. Act like it.
People rely on you. Chances are you are the only person who knows as much about your job as you do. At least your aspect of it. Sysadmins have power and need to exercise it. If someone is irritating you, remove some of their access for a few hours and ignore the phone calls. Don't let people push you around without at least pushing back. If they fire you, they have to train a replacment. Make that impossible by using nonstandard setting and documentation. Don't allow anyone the opportunity to figure out exactly what the hell is going on. Alternatively, you can set up a small surprise to wipe the system if you don't tell it not to. As long as you keep telling the surprise not to act, it won't. If you don't, or can't, the system crashes hard. Be creative.
