Slytherin House is named for Salazar Slytherin, one of the four original founders of Hogwarts. Described as "Shrewd Slytherin, from fen", he was very ambitious and a bit bigoted. He was in favor of only allowing pure-blood wizards into Hogwarts.
Criteria to get into Slytherin are cunning, ambitiousness, and a willingness to use any means to their advantage.
