Which character is the most dissillusioned? 1.Gatsby is a prime example of disillusionment in this novel. He believes he can relive the past with Daisy. This, as Nick observed, is absurd. "You can't repeat the past," said Nick. "Can't repeat that past? Why of course you can!" exclaimed Gatsby (Fitzgerald 116).Gatsby does not realize that even though Daisy may love him now, she will not leave Tom for him. She has a family with Tom, money with Tom, and stability with Tom. Why would anyone want to leave that? In Gatsby's mind he truly believes she loves him enough to leave Tom. Although she cares for him very much, she doesn't love him as much as he loves her. He has a lot of false hope and when he finds out she actually did love Tom you can see a drastic change in emotion in Gatsby. 2.Throughout the novel Tom displays the common theme of disiliousiment. His actions show how he carelessly talks about his mistress.Within the first few days of Nick being in New York, Tom rushes to introduce him to Myrtle. Nick observes that,"His acquaintances resented the fact that he turned up in popular resturants with her and, leaving her at a table, sauntered about chatting with whomsoever he knew." (Fitzgerald 28) He falsy belives that cheating on Daisy is socially acceptable. He unfortunatly thinks that it is fine for him to be involved with another woman, but the idea of Daisy with another man outrages him!
