King Midas and the Golden Touch: A Traditional Greek Myth King Midas was a very rich king that loved gold. Everything that he owned he wanted to be gold. He also had a little girl named Iris and when he said “ when I die, I want you to have more gold than any man, women, or child on the face of the earth.” (Potter 174). Iris had however grown tired of looking at gold, she wanted to see the beautiful colours of the rainbow and the blue of the sky and the green of the trees or the red of the sunset. She couldn’t stand gold anymore. King Midas loved gold so much that every morning after breakfast he went down to the vault to count out his gold. One day as he was counting his gold a God came to see him. His name was Bacchus and he was the God of happiness. He asked King Midas that if he wanted anything in the world what would it be. He told him that he wanted the golden touch. Bacchus replied with “ at sunrise tomorrow, the golden touch will be yours.” (Potter 176). When Midas woke up the next morning he found that it had actually worked. He had the golden touch! He ran around the palace touching everything that was not already gold. He went for breakfast and asked that his daughter be present because he had a surprise for her. He realized that everything he touched turned to gold even his food. When Iris came in she saw he father crying and ran into his arms. She then turned to gold. King Midas then ran to his vault and started to cry. Bacchus came back and told him to jump into the river and pour water on everything that he turned gold if he wanted his life and daughter back. So he did that and sure enough his daughter came back to life. Excerpt from Angel Square The narrator in this story is very bad in school. When he was younger he told his teacher that he wanted to be a writer when he got older, but he was the second worst writer in the class. In grade four he had to take a I.Q test and he had to take it over again because he scored so low. The worst writer in the class was Melody Bleach. Her problem was she never had a pencil and she couldn’t write with a pen and a nib because she pressed too hard. (Doyle 62). All of the kids would laugh at Melody especially when she wet her pants in grade three. Blue Cheeks (his teacher) found him daydreaming and told him to solve the question on the board. Blue Cheeks had the ability to turn his head all the way around with his body facing the other way. The sentence he was told to read was ‘ Ralph edged closer as the moose sniffed suspiciously and snapped the picture’. (Doyle 63). He didn’t know what was wrong with the sentence so he had to write one hundred lines of ‘I must learn my grammar!’ (Doyle 64).
