Cement is one of the oldest construction materials known to man. At nearly 12 million years old, it even predates mankind itself (Cement). How was it produced so long ago? Heat and pressure caused natural reactions in the Earth which created cement (Cement). The first natural reactions that produced cement are thought to have taken place in reactions between limestone and oil shale during spontaneous combustion (Vaughan). This reaction caused natural cement to form. To this day, cement and concrete have grown into huge industries. They remain as one of the most important building compounds used in modern industry.
